  1. Hello All, Was hoping I could get some advice - I am currently using an M2TECH Young DAC connected to a PC via USB running the latest JRiver Media Center on Windows 8.1. I have heard about integer mode being the best mode of operation and see it often related to Mac usage. Is this possible on a PC and if so, what would be required to make it work in my system assuming that the Young DAC is integer mode compatible. How do I enable this within JRiver also…? Also, should I be using Kernel Streaming, WASAPI or ASIO for the data path? Appreciate any help/advice on this... Cheers, Vin.
  2. I am trying to put together a CAPS Carbon music server and notice that some have used 64-bit Windows 8 Pro instead of the recommended 32-bit version even though, strictly speaking, the Intel DN2800MT motherboard does not support any 64-bit OS. Just wondering, has anyone encountered any problem with the 64-bit Win8 OS?
  3. Hello, I have been looking for a simple way to optimize a Windows 8 computer for audio use. We manufacture DACs and it is important that we can optimize our dealers and customers computers quickly and easily. A few months ago I saw the script that "John Doe" wrote and thought that was a great idea because it is a really easy way to automate Windows 8 for audio use. Anything that we can do to make it simpler and sound better is a good thing for the industry and I think this would be of interest to a lot of other computer audiophiles out there. My current script for Windows 8 disables around 250 services & drivers. I have put a lot of work into finding the correct services/drivers to shut down. When I say "correct" I mean ones that improve sound quality and of course do not cause a BSOD. It would be helpful to have others take a look at what I have done, try it out and offer suggestions. The script is leaning a bit towards ease of use than "absolutely best sound quality possible". Some of my requirements are: · Ethernet connection for connection to LAN and wifi (iPad use and putting Music Drive on network) · Ability to use JRiver · Ability to use third part playback software such as JPLAY The script has 4 options that you have to answer Yes or No to: 1) Do you want to disable Remote desktop? If you use some type of remote desktop or VPN to control your computer answer no. 2) Does your computer use an Intel processor? If you answer yes the script will shut down some unnecessary AMD processes. 3) Does your computer use an IDE/ATA HDD or SSD interface? Generally the answer is no, but, some of the secondary PCIe SSDs in laptops are using this interface. 4) Do you wish to use WASAPI for audio playback? If you use or want to be able to use WASAPI answer yes. The script disables wifi on the computer. It does allow Ethernet connection and LAN access. It also allows access to a NAS. I find that connecting my computer to a wifi router with an Ethernet cable and using the wifi on the router is more robust and sounds better. This script is intended for people that use their computer just for audio use! If you want to do email, Office, surf the net, etc do not use this script! This script is for making what I call an "audio computer", this is used just for audio and nothing else. All Power Options are optimized: Power Scheme = high performance, USB Selective Settings disabled, Desktop background setting slide show paused, Disable PCI Express Link State Power, CPU state set to 100 percent – no CPU throttling, Intel graphics set to maximum battery life, passive system cooling. I also set the display to turn off after 1 minute, set hard disk to never turn off, computer to never go to sleep and if using laptop the laptop lid closed keeps the computer on. You can run the script from a USB stick or anywhere you want. You must right click the file and "run as administrator". Once you run this script the changes are permanent. Meaning they will remain even after rebooting your computer. To get back to your original settings use my second script which returns all settings that were modified back to Windows 8 standard except for the Power Scheme settings. You can view and modify the script by opening it in Notepad. Computers do not have all the same services so I have tried to concentrate on the basic services/drivers that are common to Windows 8 machines. I am in the HiFi business but I want to state that I will never charge for this and it will be a free download on our website. As I hope you would understand you use this script at completely your own risk! I would recommend making a system image of your drive, a restore point, a copy of your Registry (on a USB stick) and to create a bootable Windows 8 DVD Repair Disk before you run the script. You must reboot your machine after making a restore point and before running the script. Then script has been over on the JPLAY forum for a couple months now and if you want you can read about it over there. 4. An interesting problem with windows 8 and my ultrafi dac (which has no problems with windows 7). Attach the usb cable, it detects, then the driver install hangs in the middle. It will stay there for an hour if you let it, but I cancel. It shows up in the sound devices fine, but in the properties the resolution is limited to 16/48K. Will not play any hi-res material unless downsampled to 48k, as instructed by the driver, obviously. Has happened to 2 installs now (both samsung notebooks) but my feeling is it is driver signing or something. Any clues or insights into Windows 8 usb audio drivers? Thanks much in advance for your help.
  5. My system is finally up & running and it just sounds really good to my ears. Probably miles between this little system and yours, but if that's my worst problem, I'm fortunate. I had serious doubts a tiny Asus netBook with Foobar2000, plugged into the world's cheapest DAC, all driven by an old Denon receiver and a sub/sat speaker system with ZERO crossover point, could sound good, but it really does. My netbook boasts an Intel Atom processor incapable of running Windows 64 bit. I was just reading another thread here about AP-Linux, and someone over there mentioned Windows 7 64 bit sounds better than Windows 7 32 bit. Someone later said Windows 8 sounds better then 7. It ain't broke, & I ain't fixing it - YET. I plan to leave things the way they are for many months or longer. Still, a long-term game plan is a good thing, yes? I'd be much obliged to anyone kind enough to enlighten of significant differences - if any - in sq between win7 64, win7 32, and win8. Good evening to you all. Gary
  6. Is it possible to run an Alix board with windows 8 and, say Jriver? If not, are there other options with no head, no fan, a similar form factor, etc. that will do this? Music is in a NAS --- I just need ethernet in, usb 2.0 out for my async usb dac.
  7. Hi Folks I wonder if there is interest in a customized, multilanguage Windows 8 Pro x64 Version, tuned and tweaked for audio use and installable like every other "normal" windows version... Since there is absolutely no interest in violating any Copyrights, a legal Windows 8 Pro Key would be needed to install this version of Windows 8 and activate it later on. The Focus of this Windows Version is just Playing Music an the best level possible and beeing a Network Client for NAS Systems (SMB/DLNA/...) The System would be completely stripped down as far as possible without loosing network services, JRiver MediaCenter 18 (Trial) and Foobar2000 already pre-installed. Foobar with the needed Plugins, etc.. There are many possibilities far beyond from what i have read so far on many sites in the net. - Stripping Down all Windows Services etc. (standard... ) - General System tuning for performance - Div. Tuning for SSD use - Div. Tuning for NTFS - Div. Tuning for Audio use - and lot's more... This windows version would be highly customizable, there are almost no limits. and it would be available as regular ISO File to burn it on CD or create a bootable USB Stick. Compatible with all hardware a normal windows 8 installation would be.... It won't get easier than that guys ...so what do you think, would the work be appreciated? Cheerio, John Doe
  8. I received the following advice from BAD concerning the installation of drivers under Windows 8. (H/T Michael Ritter). Louis Hissink All you need to do is disable Driver Signature Enforcement Thanks to: http://laslow.net/2012/03/14/disable...-windows-8-cp/ So, one of the big issues I’ve had with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is that Microsoft now not only forces you to use Digitally Signed Drivers (this isn’t new, as Windows 7 requires them as well), but also checks to see if the driver has been modified and will fail to install if it has. This is a problem for anyone who needs to modify a driver .INF to support their device (*cough*Android ADB Drivers*cough*). Fortunately, there is a (slightly complicated) workaround. To get started: From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon). Click ‘More PC Settings’. Click ‘General’. Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’. Wait a bit. Click ‘Troubleshoot’. Click ‘Advanced Options’ Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’ Click Restart. ??? Profit! When your computer restarts, select ‘Disable driver signature enforcement‘ from the list. You can now load your modified driver. Reboot again once the driver is installed and all will be well. Update (June 5th, 2012): As requested in the comments below, you can permanently enable Test Mode () by opening an Elevated Command Prompt and typing the following commands, then rebooting: Code: bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ONTo turn it off again, use these commands: Code: bcdedit -set loadoptions ENABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING OFFStandard disclaimer that by enabling Test Mode you are opening yourself to potential maliciousness, blah blah blah. I’m going to assume that if you’re going to do this you’ll have the common sense to verify things before installing them. Don’t blame me if your computer bursts in to flames!
  9. Anyone know if a Windows 8 driver for the BAD Alpha USB is available? Windows 8 recognises the device in a sense, but has yellow flagged it. I tried installing the supplied windows 7 driver using windows 7 compatability but the installation program won't work. Updating the driver manually doesn't work either as Windows 8 tells you the latest is already on the system. No major drama as I replaced the BAD with the MF Vlink, but it would be nice to have the BAD Alpha USB working.
  10. This error message is a gem from Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. The message pops up when trying to install XMOS / Thesycon USB drivers that haven't been "signed". Windows 8 Pro 64 bit enforces code signing more rigorously than the 32 bit version. To get around this error and install the unsigned USB drivers for your DAC follow these instructions. On the "Metro" Start Screen move your mouse to the upper or lower right corner of the screen. When the Charms menu appears click on the Gear icon, usually the bottom icon. On the following little screen select More PC Settings. After than a screen with several options on the left will appear. Select General on the left menu. Scroll to the bottom on the right and selectRestart Now under Advanced Setup. Your PC will appear to restart then popup another menu with options. Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Windows Startup Settings, then Restart. Once the PC restarts select the option (number 7 maybe?) that says Disable Driver Signature Enforcement. When Windows boots you'll be able to install the XMOS / Thesycon USb drivers for your USB DAC. Restarting after than will return the PC to its normal code enforcement policy. To Disable Driver Signature Enforcement permanently follow these instructions: On the "Metro" Start Screen right click any blanks space. Select All Apps in the lower right corner. Scroll until you find Command Prompt. Right click Command Prompt then select run as administrator from the new menu that appears at the bottom of the screen. In the command prompt window type the following commands and hit enter. bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON To re-enable Driver Signature Enforcement permanently follow these instructions: On the "Metro" Start Screen right click any blanks space. Select All Apps in the lower right corner. Scroll until you find Command Prompt. Right click Command Prompt then select run as administrator from the new menu that appears at the bottom of the screen. In the command prompt window type the following commands and hit enter. bcdedit -set loadoptions ENABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING OFF

  12. All XMOS / Thesycon USB drivers I've tried on Windows 8 32-bit version have installed just fine, but the process isn't as smooth as Windows 7 for now. Here is a quick rundown of how the installation goes. Method One: Run the Setup file to install the drivers. Receive the following popup message. This Setup cannot run on the current operating system. Supported systems are: After clicking OK the following Compatibility Assistant window will appear. Select "Run the program using compatibility settings." Some drivers will produce two messages like the following. Select "Install this driver anyway" and that's it. Method Two: This is only necessary if the compatibility feature are not enabled or if for some reason the popup doesn't appear. Find the Setup file and right click it. Select Properties. Select the Compatibility Tab, click "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 7. After the installation find the Uninstall file most likely in C:\Program Files\... and do the same thing as above by selecting Windows 7. This will allow the uninstallation to run smoothly when the time comes.
  13. Windows 8 is here. This thread is self explanatory. Who is using it? Who is waiting for SP1? What have you guys found?
