About Me

  1. My trip through headphones and speakers was very diverse, but I finally reached the top floors and found out I am completely lost. As the title suggests, I am about to buy one of the AKGs (most likely 712) and it would seem they lie in a territory that cannot be run from basic on-board sound card. Currently there is an MSI B150 GAMING M3 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1150 sitting in my case. According to many articles and forums, on-board sound cards are better and better. ALC1150 seems to be satisfying for normal use. However, it would seem it is not powerful enough to run the 712 PRO. Not enough anything. Under perfect circumstances: 115dB 40 Hz – 15 kHz,dB +0.02, -0.07 THD 0.0043 I might be new to the higher part of audio technology, but I can tell that the picked headphones would be pointless to connect to such card. Frequency 10Hz - 39.8kHz, max input 200mW, impedance 62 ohmu, sensitivity 105dB SPL/V, jack 3.5mm, cable lenght 3 m Do I go for an external sound card like Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround HD, something internal? Do I need additional amp, or will the card manage to run the 712s on its own? Asking like this always annoys the hell out of me, makes me feel like my brain failed. However, here ti comes: I would really appreciate help from the skilled and more knowledgeable. Could some good soul offer advice?
  2. Good Morning All. I am after a multiple analog input sound card for use with either Windows or Mac. External device would be best, but if the only option is internal, then internal it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. I have PC which I built for both gaming and music listening purposes. For headphones, I have two pairs of the Audio Technica ATH-M50X for music and Logitech G430 for gaming. I am currently shopping for a sound card and 2.1 desktop speaker solution for my computer. For the sound card I need it to handle surround sound in gaming, do well with music listening and have proper shielding from electrical and electronic interference. I listen to film score, classical, new age, electronic, rock, and pop music. I am currently leaning toward the Creative Sound Blaster ZXR, but I am open to suggestions on other reliable internal and external sound cards designed for both music and gaming. The price range that I am looking at for the card is around $250 or less. I am currently ruling out Asus due to experiencing problems with a number of their products. For the speakers, I want a 2.1 setup that handles gaming, movies, and music and can last for years. I am looking at a price range of around $200 or less. Right now the only speakers that I am ruling out are the Logitech Z623s because I have bought two pairs over a four year period and they each only lasted two years, which I felt was a ripoff for the price tag that I paid. My music formats are Apple Lossless Audio Compression (ALAC) and iTunes Plus on Windows 10 64-bit. Thanks.
  4. OK so this might be a crazy idea, and it might also be totally impossible. Furthermore, it might be completely pointless, but I have a crazy idea and I want to know if you guys think it's possible. What I'm trying to do is have all the audio that would come from anything displayed on my TV (HDMI out on my GeForce card) run through one set of speakers. The speakers in question is a tower speaker running through the audio out on the back of my computer. But I would also like any audio that would come from anything displayed on my monitor (DVI out on the GeForce) run through a different set of speakers. Those speakers would be the ones that are mounted in my monitor, and run through the headphone out port on my computer. The windows audio thing recognizes the headphone port and the audio out on the back as two totally separate ports, and I can run them both at the same time, or one at a time, depending on what I set as default audio out. Do you guys think this is possible? Any constructive input would be appreciated, no rush as, like I said, this might be completely pointless, it's just a crazy idea I had that I thought might be cool. In the end, I want to be able to drag, for example, a youtube video that is playing from my TV to the monitor and have the audio follow it.
  5. Hello everyone, I just joined the forum and appreciate all the information on this website. I am researching a problem that I was hoping you could help with. I have a laptop driving a 4k display using displayport 1.2 (3840x2160@60Hz). I'd like to get the audio stream (intel display audio) into my receiver but cannot find any displayport audio extractors. I could use HDMI but then my display could only run at 30Hz (looks horrible). I've looked into USB-to-SPDIF devices, but I don't believe those won't provide 5.1 sound from Netflix/PowerDVD/MPC. Anyone have thoughts how I can get bit-perfect stereo audio into my receiver when playing music as well as 5.1 Dolby/DTS encoded sound when watching movies? Thanks, Nathan

Hello Guys, I am about to order some parts to start building a HTPC with a Streacom FC9 fan-less case but before I spend lots of money on the parts, I thought I can consult with you guys here to make sure I'm on the right track. Many thanks in advanced for your help. I am using a Synology NAS where I stored my high resolution files (mainly FLAC) and I also have a Rotel RA-1570 integrated amplifier which has got a PC-USB input supporting High res audio files. My main purpose of building this HTPC is for playing back high resolution audio files from my NAS (and occasionally video too). I also want to have a nice and responsive interface (something like the XBMC) that I can also control by an android app. I am thinking of buying the Gigabyte "GA-H97M-D3H" which comes with integrated "Realtek® ALC892 codec". My question is, is there a way to get a bit-perfect and low noise output into the amplifier with the current set up or do I need a sound card? probably something supporting ASIO? Also can I just use the USB cable from PC to Amplifier? or should I use the SPDIF output of the sound card? what's the best way to achieve the best sound quality with my amp? My budget is limited for under 200$ for a sound card. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
  7. Hi, My father is a big fan of classical music, he has tons of CD albums but does not know so much about sound equipment and neither do I. He needs a new PC, and since he's used to manage big libraries of music on computer, I thought it would be nice if he could directly use his new PC as an HiFi. He listen to all kind of classical music, all the great composer (Mozart, Wagner, Vivaldi ...), orchestras, operas. But also some more simple ones like lute instrumentals. Most of his records are in stereo, sometimes in mono. Some are recent but some may be 80 years old. The room would be around 15m². Let's consider we start from zero, no previous audio equipment. Headphones are not an option. I come to you for general advices. Is it realistic to use a PC as an HiFi ? Would I need a soundcard or would the chipset Realtek ALC887 be okay : Gigabyte GA-H81M-S2H (GAH81MS2H) ? If I need a soundcard, would that one be okay ? Would I need an audio amplifier ? What kind of speakers would I need ? I understand those question are very generalist and you may need more informations such as a budget but I would like to understand what may be my needs before I can decide of a budget. English is not my native language, I apologize if my grammar is a bit rubbish.
  8. I hope someone on here could help be but don't worry if not! If not, If someone knows somewhere else that could provide better help, I'd be happy to hear! I am having an issue with the sound on my PC using an on-board Realtek sound. I am currently using the jack ports on my ASUS P8Z77-V LX Motherboard to listen to music via Logitech surround speakers (back port) and my Audio-Technica ATH-M50 via front port with a FiiO mini amp (I assume that the front ports are connected to the motherboard?). My PC seems to be running Realtek sound drivers or on board sound card in the Motherboard ? But I am not sure. The sound that comes from this board just doesn't seem good, I mean it sounds fine etc but when you crank up the volume, it just can't seem to cope and sounds like certain sound levels are overpowering the others. I have tried to change all the settings, EQ presets in iTunes and also the Realtek manager but it doesn't improve it, if anything, it makes it sound even more distorted. I also seem to get feedback from the motherboard when I am moving my mouse and when the PC is just whirling away but I understand that this is a limitation of having an on-board sound card. I have compared, using my AT ATH-M50's, the sound from my PC to the sound coming from my iPhone or iPad and the sound is so much better on the Apple devices, even when you crank up the volume. I have looked at purchasing a separate sound card such as the Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 Sound Card etc but will this really make any difference or would it be best to just change settings for my on-board sound card?
  9. I am fairly new to computer speaker setups, and planning to add the YST-SW012 to an existing 2.0 speaker system. After having searched various forums with usually mixed information about connecting this subwoofer to a pc, I am unsure about this setup. Do I just connect the sub with the supplied cable to the center/subwoofer output on my sound card, or do I need a separate receiver or a different cable? Any help is appreciated.
  10. Hello, I've been trying to find the best way to approach my problem but there's so much information available on the internet and I'm not really sure where to begin. I'd really appreciate some advice. So a few years ago I spent a considerable amount of money but got a really good deal on a set of speakers and an AMP. Here's what I purchased: A pair of Dali Concept 10's Dali Ikon Vokal 1 Center Dali Ikon Active Sub A Pair of Dali concept 1 surround speakers Yamaha RX-V673 These are all hooked up to my PC through a Auzentech X-meridian 7.1 2g sound card via a coaxial cable. Now when I first got these I thought the whole set up was pretty amazing and was happy, I've since come to realize they don't sound nearly as good as they could and the sound is pretty flat in general. My main usage is listening to music in 2.1 or upmixed to surround and occasional some games and movies in 5.1. My question is what can I do to improve upon this set up? From my reading so far, here's what seem to be the options I should take to upgrade the system: Upgrade the amp: I'm getting the feeling my amp is grossly under-powered considering the size of my front speakers and sub. In this case I wouldn't really be sure which amp to go for and why Purchase an external DAC Start using some software based mixing Now I'm not really sure if I'm on the right track with the above three options and if i was, which particular products I should buy. There are probably options I've missed entirely. So advice that you guys could give me on how I should go about improving my set up would be greatly appreciated. Budget would probably be around 2-3k but I'd only want to spend money if the result was a noticeably large improvement. Thanks in advance.
  11. Can you help me decide which sound card to purchase (which will help determine the receiver I purchase)? I'm about to buy all new audio components and I want to make sure I buy the right receiver for my HTPC system; but I need to get media from the PC to this new, unpurchased system effectively. So my question - which sound card(s) can send two digital zones (preferably optical) to my receiver? The least expensive option w/o compromising data quality would be great. DAC will be in receiver. My system HTPC - XBMC Gotham Two speaker zones - 5.1 + 10 pair around the house (all wired). To be purchased - 5.1 speakers, 10 pair speakers, receiver with two optical inputs (similar to Denon AVR-X3000)...and sound card(s) Receiver will be 7.1. It'll run 5.1 for TV, then another channel for the 10 pair I'd love to know your receiver recommendations once I know how to best get the data off my PC. Thanks, -R
  12. There are lots of articles out there (mags/websites etc) debating the virtues of dsd vs pcm 'High-Res' quality etc. I'm trying to understand how it is that my eight year old (Win XP) laptop can play DSD files when a 'DSD' compatible DAC is 'required' to decode/playback DSD files. The laptop doesn't have an 'audiophile' soundcard, and I'm not claiming the sound is better than an external DAC, but I can clearly hear the difference between various formats (.mp3 Vs FLAC vs DSD etc). Why are DSD DAC's required when any pc (or Mac with the right software) can already play these files?
