About Me

  1. I must say I find this download very impressive. This really sounds as if being there. The label has a very good track record. Their previous releases has all been 96 pcm, and very very good indeed but this DXD takes it all up a notch. If this is exemplary for DXD recordings then that is what I will be searching for. DXD recommendations please! Sound Liaison; Carmen Gomes sings the Blues.
  2. View Classified T+A DAC8 DSD Wonderful sounding DAC. I upgraded the firmware for the DAC and Amanero USB board so it now works flawlessly with Linux-based sources (native DSD512) over USB. https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/650023808-ta-dac8-dsd/ Only selling due to upgrade to a Holo May KTE DAC. Seller ericuco Date 09/22/23 Price 2,000.00 USD Category Digital to Analog Converters
  3. Why are there debates if "bits are bits"? Can you hear a difference in streaming audio software? Bits are Bits! Foobar2000 was lighter on its feet, more accurate tone/timbre, quieter, and had better timing of decays. There are a delicacy and precision about its sound. JRiver had a “fatter” sound with more bleeding edges and smeared textures. It sounded flatter (by a good margin) and more veiled in a thicker, unnatural warmth.
  4. I recently purchased a Topping NX4 DSD DAC that was DOA. I exchanged it for a new one and now the replacement seems to be misbehaving, as well. That said, do Topping have a QA problem? The NX4 DSD appears to be unable to switch modes from DSD to PCM and will erroneously decimate DSD to PCM. The rear light is constantly blue, never red which will indicate DSD processing. Is this normal? So it now appears time to make a decision. Do I try for yet another NX4 or look higher up the food chain at the DX3 Pro or the DX7S? Will these be better behaved?
  5. Oppo has announced a few more details on their upcoming UDP-205 disc player.... Lossless High-resolution Audio Audio format support has been expanded to multi-channel DSD64/128, as well as 192kHz/24-bit PCM used in high-resolution lossless formats such AIFF, ALAC, APE, FLAC and WAV. (DSD64 is played back in native mode or converted to PCM, DSD128 converted to PCM.) http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-205/
  6. So here is the question. Yesterday I downloaded the stunning DXD 352 recording of Carmen Gomes plays the Blues. I also bought the flac 96 version for my portable media player. Now a friend of mine claims that the label would have done better if they had down-sampled to flac 88 as that is a doubly even multiple. Sound Liaison are selling 352, 192 and 96 pcm or flac as well as DSD 256, 128 and 64 . I believe that they know what they are doing as I find their recordings among the very best available, however another favorite label of mine, Reference Recordings, seems to be doing 176 so ....? are Sound Liaison missing something? Carmen Gomes sings the Blues
  7. Hi, I'm trying t get the best from my configuration JRiver Media Center 24 (on a fanless i3, Windows 10) Audiolab M-DAC+ (using the provided IUSBAudio Driver ASIO) Since the M-DAC+ supports up to DSD256, I give it a try, using the options provided by JRiver Media Center 24, and, since then I'm converting on the fly my material from PCM to DSD128 (it seems that my i3 is unable to do more than that without stuttering). SQ is heavily modified with the standard material, in a way identically described all over the world. I asked to my my guitar teacher to compare the different versions, without telling him what to expect, and, when I asked to listen a 16/48 converted to DSD128 he jumped on the seat, saying: "Uh!?!". Me, I'm using DSP Studio to do the conversion. Let me guess that I'm bypassing the Windows Audio engine, since with this configuration I can disable the JRiver Media Center 24 and Windows 10 volume). Is it the better choice? By the way I tried also HQPlayer with identical results. Now it hangs, and I don't know the reason. Perhaps I have modified the wrong parameter among the 100's available (HQPlayer reminds me a Caterpillar, full of leverages. On the opposite there are cars with the automatic gear. Me, I like better my Alfa Romeo with a manual gear, and so my JRiver Media Center 24). Thanks

Thanks

  10. I'm sure a few of you have already read over it, an I'm sure each side has their rebuddles ready. An maybe I'll burn at the stake for even posting/suggesting it But all things aside, I've you've not read over this it's a nice article to explore. Also, since I'm bringing it up, what papers or studies have been conducted that contradict the findings of this one? It would be nice to have a larger pool of data to read over on this subject than just a single paper. Also another question I have, assuming all things equal can or do hardware manufacturers prioritize or optimize firmware/hardware to provide a better quality of sound with one file format over the other? Is there gear designed to sound BETTER with DSD than PCM and vice versa? An for the record I don't listen to either... still in RedBook land my self with the occasional 24Bit Vinyl Rip from trusted friends...
  11. This was my post in the SACD Ripping thread (via Oppo/Pioneer). I didn't want to derail that thread so I created this one about the value of SACD. Thanks Do you love SACD / DSD sound? I do and always have. Why is there so much negativity about it on the other sites? Whenever it is mentioned, people say it's just remastering, or DSD is fundamentally flawed, or it's a placebo affect. To me it's night and day with transparency, bass clarity, speed, far better defined images, lack-of-fatigue in the highs, no digital shrillness, analog-like-advantages, and on and on. But there is real, almost hostile pushback, and I just don't understand it. Yep, PCM processing has come a long way, and I love what my Chord DAVE does with PCM (and it also does a fine job with native DSD, thankfully), but there is nothing like DSD to these ears. I sure hope the format stays alive in some capacity. This new method of turning SACDs into files is a Godsend, and I would hope it revives DSD to some degree. Hope springs eternal you know. But it won't happen if there is all this criticism of it. I just don't get how the audiophile community could be so critical of something that just sounds so great. I guess there is no accounting for taste, but do others in this thread hear what I have always heard from DSD? Thanks for any comments. Here is the other thread about SACD ripping with Oppo/Pioneer.

  13. Likened to Shakespeare, usually, performed subpar—that is ! Simply, people consume Spotify... And YouTube, but not always : Point being, can one really judge DSD just because the music system is « playing » a DSD file ? Even with—for starters—obvious or not, « transcoding » to PCM and... So, who's aware (when watching film at, at best, 1080p) like Theseus :
  14. Can audiophilia lead to suicide or mental institution ? This thread will be my chronicle ; feel free to bash or help. I was happy until my usb cable broke as a new DSD vs PCM debate broke as well. All that hatred... Then I was away from home for the holidays and when I came back last night, the computer full of files to test (upsampled dsd, SRCed PCM, what have you) I just found my system horrid. Was it the cold, the fatigue, the storm that cut the power for 36 hours (but a relative switched it on before my return) ??? or was it like when you haven't seen the loved one for several weeks and for a short while you know what you will know for sure only after the divorce, split, what have you : in fact she's very far from perfect, maybe not even your kind ; but after some warm up you're fulfilled again... just as I think my system is quite great today. Did I contemplate the truth or... was it fatigue, required breaking time, what have you ?? Anyway, I started playing with my files, wondering about crazy things such as should I feed my TEAC 501 with straight dff files or use Audiogate to either upconvert to 128 or convert to pcm so I can EQ (gosh ! isn’t 192 better while it should be 176.4? src ? eq? which settings ?where ? rx3, A+, offline, on flight?????)AAaaargh!! So far I have taken one decision : src no more, be it rx or A+, no upconversion at DAC level either, Slow filter (linear, almost no pre-ringing, aliasing at 25 K though), EQ (includes a Low Pass at 20K so I don’t care for the aliasing) To be followed… if I’m not institutionalized…
  15. Does big labels spoil the audio quality by over producing /mixing/ mastering? Or are there examples that proves this theory wrong? As an example I chose these 2 musically very satisfying albums. Adele;Amazon.com: Adele: 21: Music Carmen Gomes;http://www.soundliaison.com/ Adele ''21''; DRdata base score; min. 5, max. 8. Carmen Gomes ''Thousand Shades of Blue''; DRdata base score; min. 12, max. 15. That is almost 2 times as much dynamic range and Carmen Gomes, on that album, is singing softer than Adele. But of course it is also two completely different production methods; Carmen Gomes source;http://www.soundliaison.com/ Adele 21; source;Tom Elmhirst: Recording Adele 'Rolling In The Deep'
  16. Greetings Folks, For some reason, playing back my ripped SACD's with Aurdirvana coupled to my Devialet leveraging a Weiss INT 202 is causing seriously bizarre play back. Track's volume is variable within a song, fluctuating up and down at any moment. Sounds awfully psychedelic in a not pleasing way! Anyone know what the cause could be? i believe my settings are all good. When i rip the SACD's to PCM with Audiogate, it's no problem. Blech. Help!??
