  1. McIntosh just announced a new upgraded DA2 Digital Module for some products including the MA9000, MA8900, MA7200 and MA5300 Integrated Amplifiers; MAC7200 Receiver; and C49 Preamplifier. This part from the press release may be of interest to some who like to convert and resample audio prior to the input of the DAC. "Additionally, the DA2’s USB input can support native playback of up to DSD512, surpassing the DSD256 limit of the DA1. This increased DSD playback support is thanks to the next generation, Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) that powers the DA2. This audiophile-grade DAC is highlighted by both an improved dynamic range and total harmonic distortion compared to the DA1. The USB input also supports DXD up to 384kHz. The coax and optical inputs can decode digital music up to 24-bit/192kHz for high resolution audio playback. Rounding out the DA2 is a proprietary MCT input that offers a secure, custom DSD connection for playback of the high definition audio found on SACDs when paired with McIntosh's MCT series of SACD/CD Transports to produce the best possible sound quality from a SACD collection." Here's the entire press release: McIntosh Announces DA2 Digital Audio Module Upgrade Kit Units with the DA1 installed can now be upgraded to the newer DA2 Binghamton, NY – November 14, 2019 – McIntosh, the global leader in prestigious home entertainment and ultimate-quality audio for 70 years, is proud to announce the DA2 Digital Audio Module Upgrade Kit. The DA2 Digital Audio Module is McIntosh's newest and most advanced module for processing digital audio. It comes standard in their C53 and C2700 Preamplifiers, allowing both of those units to take advantage of some of the latest innovations in digital audio technology. McIntosh products equipped with the DA1 can now be upgraded to the newer DA2. The models that can be upgraded are: MA9000, MA8900, MA7200 and MA5300 Integrated Amplifiers; MAC7200 Receiver; and C49 Preamplifier. (Note: These models will continue to come with the DA1 installed. Upgrading to the DA2 is an optional dealer installed upgrade that must be installed by an Authorized McIntosh Dealer or Authorized McIntosh Service Agency.) The DA2 Digital Audio Module builds upon the DA1 with an expanded set of capabilities. In addition to having all the same connections as the DA1 (2 coaxial, 2 optical, 1 USB and 1 MCT), a new audio-only HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) connection is included on the DA2. This allows it to be connected to TVs with a compatible HDMI (ARC) output to bring TV sound to the next level by listening to it through a home stereo system. ARC functionality can provide two-way communication between the DA2 equipped McIntosh unit and TV, allowing for volume control and lip-syncing functions to ensure the audio and video are perfectly synched. Popular multi-channel audio formats from Dolby® and DTS® are supported and will be expertly converted to 2-channel audio for proper playback through the DA2 equipped unit. When CEC communication is enabled in both the DA2 equipped unit and TV, the TV remote can control the power and volume of the connected McIntosh unit. Additionally, the DA2’s USB input can support native playback of up to DSD512, surpassing the DSD256 limit of the DA1. Rounding out the DA2 is a proprietary MCT input that offers a secure, custom DSD connection for playback of the high definition audio found on SACDs when paired with McIntosh's MCT series of SACD/CD Transports to produce the best possible sound quality from a SACD collection. Due to the technical nature of the DA2 upgrade, the upgrade must be performed by a qualified trained professional at an Authorized McIntosh Dealer or Authorized McIntosh Service Agency. Pricing and Availability Orders for the DA2 Upgrade Kit can now be placed with Authorized McIntosh dealers with shipping expected to begin to the United States in November 2019 and the rest of the world shortly thereafter. Suggested retail price (VAT, shipping and any customs duties related to current standards of individual countries are excluded): $1,000 USD About McIntosh Founded in 1949, McIntosh Laboratory, Inc. is known for offering distinguished quality audio products, superior customer service and the ultimate experience in music and film. 2. I subscribe to Tidal Hifi and have access to Masters encoded with MQA. My computer is connected to my McIntosh MHA100 through USB and I am using eihter Amarra Symphony or Audirvana Plus (with Tidal) + Itunes. My understanding is that Tidal by itself connected through my McIntosh will not deliver the full MQA experience and need an MQA compatible DAC. So I was told Buesound Node 2 would happen to do just that. My issue with this set-up is that the Burr Brown Chip on this 599$ (CDN) is not at the level of the DAC built in my McIntosh. Would I, at the end of the day ended up with worse quality music than feeding it with the USB cable and using my McIntosh DAC while not having the full MQA experience. Second part of this: The Audirvana Plus has MQA capability, does this solve my issues and would I get the full MQA experience? I want to integrate Blusesound in order to remove Airplay from my system because it can't stream 24 bit while bluesound could. Hope I make sense here as this is my first post. Thanks Saby
  3. Hello, I just added a new McIntosh d1100 to my system. Generally speaking, it works great, but there are a few quirky things that I was hoping I could get some help with. My setup: Roon core runs on a dedicated Ubuntu Linux VM. I have Roon endpoint on a few Macbook’s, my iPad and my iPhone. I have a Raspberry Pi 2b with the latest build of dietpi on it, and Roon Bridge installed. I then utilize the USB to connect to the McIntosh d1100. Everything is running the latest builds of Roon. DSD over PCM (DoP) is my DSD strategy. Raspberry Pi and Roon Core is hard wired 1Gbps Ethernet My issues: Pretty much in summary the "fade-in" issue described in part 1 of the d1100 review posted here at computer audiophile Whenever I play an album, there is this weird thing where I miss the first bit of the first track. How much I miss seems to depend on source. For 16/44 CD quality, it is the first fraction of a second. For DSD it could be 2-3 seconds. In Roon, you can see the file playing the first few seconds, but the DAC does not lock and start outputting sound until between about 0.5s to 3s later, depending on source. For example, when playing The Beatles Please Please Me album, starting with “I saw her standing there”, you don’t hear the first part of Paul’s count in. When kicking off “A Hard Day’s Night”, you miss the first part of that epic first chord. This seems to happen regardless of what the source is (PCM, DSD, Various sample rates) and on every album There is an intermittent issue with losing lock between tracks of an album. What happens is that at the end of one track of the album, typically during silence or low output parts during the last 3-5 seconds of the track, the DAC loses lock. Roon will still show the track playing. Then, Roon will move to the next track, the DAC regains lock and away it goes. It’s like a little “blip”. Sometimes, I end up missing just the first split second of the next track. This doesn’t happen between ALL tracks, or even between the same two tracks consistently. The issue seems to happen more frequently with DSD or high resolution PCM. Sometimes, other than missing the first second or so of the first track, the album plays fine, with the DAC consistently keeping lock track to track. Other times, the DAC continually loses lock when one track ends, and locks back on for the start of the next track. Other times, it will lose lock after one track, then lock on for the next track, but I miss the first half second or so of the next track. This happens, but not all the time, and not between every track on an album. Very inconsistent. I have tried playing with difference resync timer values, anywhere from 0.1s to 1s to 2s to even 5s just to see what would happen, as well as trying 250ms buffer to no avail. I also tried plugging my MacBook Air running Roon endpoint directly into the DAC, and experience the same problems. I think what I am hitting is a result of how McIntosh implemented the firmware on their d1100. McIntosh’ solution will likely be “use JRiver”, as they have a setting to add 2 seconds of silence between tracks that seemingly fixes this. I don’t want to use JRiver though… Anything I can do or any ideas other than pray for future firmware that addresses this? It sounds GREAT, but losing the first few seconds of every album and the inconsistent inter-track behavior is really taking away from the album experience. Thank You
  4. Hello all, May I please ask for some assistance in automating turning on the MC7205 when I turn on my HTPC. I built a powerful HTPC and I use Kodi as my media player. The HTPC is used as a preamp and as a media player I is equipped with M-audio 1010lt sound card to which is connected the MC7205 and to my record player . The Amp is then connected to my speakers. The objective is to voice activate the HTPC and automatically ask Kodi to play something, when this command is given, and the amplifier is turn off, the HTPC would turn on the MC7205 and then play what is requested. If the Amp is already turned on the no issues. According to McIntosh support , I should be able to put the Amp on a remote setting and connect HTPC to the MC7205 via a USB cable from the HTPC to the remote port on the amp. The output of the USB port is 5V.According to McIntosh literature and support it should be enough to "activate" turn on the Amp. Since electrical power is expensive here, I would like to avoid keeping the amp always on. My issues I have are: 1) when I turn on the HTPC I get a (what I call a power surge) a high signal impulse trough the speakers and similarly when the HTPC is shut down before the amp I get another spike via the speakers. How to I avoid this? 2) It seems to me that keeping the Mc7205 on remote still uses 1000w of power. Am I correct to assume that this is normal or does my amp have a problem? Thank you in advance for any assistance on this subject
  5. Hello, I have a MA8000 and I am trying to use J River to play music through my computer. I am connected to the amp with the proper USB cable and I have installed the McIntosh USB driver. I configured the settings exactly as specified on the McIntosh website. However, when attempting playback I only get five minutes through a song before audio stops and a message pops up, "ASIO Driver stopped unexpectedly." Much of the time I don't even get 30 seconds before the "ASIO Driver stopped unexpectedly". Sometimes when I connect the amp to the computer and turn them both on, they will connect and disconnect rapidly. If anyone can offer advice, let alone a solution, I'd be eternally grateful. Thank you. - Max
