I apologize if this has been asked previously. I read a lot about DSD via DoP. My question is this: If I have a music player (Auralic Aries Mini) that is capable of natively playing DSD64 – DSD256 via USB, can the Brooklyn DAC play these files NATIVELY, without using DoP? Any insight greatly appreciated Bob

OK - thanks for your response. I am pretty happy with the Brooklyn as-is, so I was wondering what your motivation was. I do not do vinyl and I have another headphone amp (Schiit Asgard 2) that I am pretty happy with. In an A-B comparison with the Brooklyn headphone amp, I thought the Schiit was much better, actually. Hope you enjoy the new product and your music!

The Brooklyn DAC does fine with DSD256 from the Auralic Aries Mini streamer over USB. I cannot imagine that they would remove that capability in the + version. I am not using the unit with a PC or Mac, so that may be the issue as previously pointed out.

    Mytek Brooklyn comments?

Hi Mike - I understand your hesitation, but I was in the exact same boat as you earlier this year. I bought the Brooklyn and have not looked back. I, too, did not need a phono stage or headphone amp, but I still think for $2K, you will not find a better-sounding DAC. Probably not at $4K, either. It is that good. Yes, there have been some firmware issues, but that seems to be in the past now. It is detailed and smooth at the same time. You truly feel like you are listening to pure sound. I marvel at detail that I missed in my CDs before and I also have been discovering material on DSD and MQA. I also listen to Tidal Hi-Fi a lot these days, and it is great through the Brooklyn. No matter what you are into, the Brooklyn can handle it. I highly recommend this unit - I am extremely pleased with it.

That is a fair question, and one that I asked before purchasing the Brooklyn DAC. For me, the Brooklyn ($1,995) is at the "highest end" of what I would want to spend on a DAC. I was looking primarily for two things that can sometimes cost much more - the ability to do MQA and Quad DSD playback. I did not even factor in the headphone amp and phono preamp, because I do not do vinyl and I already have a headphone amp that I am pleased with (Schiit Asgard 2). BTW - the Asgard 2 sounds way better to me than the headphone amp in the Brooklyn, although I am only using it single-ended, so I may not have the full scoop... All that said, the proof is in the actual listening, and I have never heard a better DAC (and I have used several). In my experience, it has no resemblance to an AV receiver (trying to do too much at a certain price point). For my money, it is a clear winner - I am very pleased with my purchase.
  6. Aries Mini sounds just as good as a Bluesound Node 2 (I have both). Both will pass MQA. Advantages for Bluesound are that it's part of a whole-house wireless audio system and it has a 12 volt trigger. Advantages for Aries Mini are - up to DSD256 playback, Airplay ready and more user settings in the app. You can't go wrong with either one, IMHO. Bob

That is insane. For $800 US it has to be bogus. Are those photos that you personally took when you received the unit? Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention.
  8. For those of you who LIKE the look of the otherwise all-black Schiit Asgard 2 headphone amplifier WITH the ridiculous silver volume knob, you can safely ignore this thread :). For those of you who, like me, think the silver knob looks terrible, read on. I contacted Schiit support (with tongue-in-cheek) asking if they could send me a black knob to replace the one "erroneously" shipped with my amp. They replied that "they had no black knobs" (which is the response I expected). I then set out on a quest to fix the problem myself. I found a source in Asia that was able to supply me a solid, cast aluminum black knob for about $10 all-in. This knob is the exact same diameter, but a little thicker than the knob supplied by Schiit. It is also slightly glossier than the finish of the amp. I still like it better than the silver knob, though. I have attached a photo of the result. All comments welcome. If you are interested in pursuing this yourself, let me know via PM. Happy listening!

I can verify that the Brooklyn DAC can handle DSD256 just fine through the USB input. I do not use Audirvana+, so I cannot answer the other part of your question. Happy listening!

    Auralic Aries Mini

It's very close to me. Aries might sound a little more open and full. Honestly, I am not sure I could tell the difference in an A/B test

    Auralic Aries Mini

I have both and cannot tell the difference between the two on Tidal content. That said, I need the Aries Mini because the Node 2 does NOT do native DSD. If you do not have any DSD files, I would stick with the Node 2. BTW - the Aries Mini passed MQA content just fine to my Brooklyn DAC before the Beta 5.0 firmware update. Happy listening!
