Ethernet Switch Difference.

Help! is there anything special with dedicated switch for Audio Video bridging? I find it strange that only Motu sells them. http://motu.com/products/avb/avb-switch.

Ethernet switch should speak AVB protocol otherwise AVB system does not work as designed. AVB system consists of AVB talker (sender), AVB bridge (switch) and AVB listener (receiver). AVB participants are synchronized with one master clock without word clock cable using IEEE 802.1AS time sync protocol. IEEE 802.1 Qat protocol provides the mechanism to reserve some bandwidth for audio stream, something similar to isochronous mechanism of USB. IEEE 802.1Qav guarantees worst case packet forward delay.

 

It seems some models of Cisco Catalyst 3850 and Catalyst 3650 also support AVB protocol.

This is to integrate multiple digital interface. Meant for many DACs and speakers for large installation where timing is crucial for all the speakers to be in sync.

Do your DAC, endpoints, servers, etc., support AVB?

 

Even if mine did, I would be buying this AVB switch. I don’t the functionality. 

 

I am much more worried about noise and plan on buying UpTone Audio’s switch when it comes out.

I was using Mytek for my main front and Motu for others. I also attempted to connect other different USB DAc to be synced with the main channel. They can work but prone to mistiming. I am now using only Motu and the recommended method for perfect sync is to use their switch.

Oh, I see. This thread is an ad for the Motu switch. I should have figured that out sooner. 

 

I doubt that many here have hardware that would work with AVB and even fewer would benefit from it.
