FredericV
Recently I came along this NUChttps://www.alternate.be/Intel(R)/NUC-Kit-NUC7I7DNK2E-barebone/html/product/1443576 and got interested in it's CPU, because it's a 15 Watt TPD i7 mobile cpu:https://ark.intel.com/products/124968/Intel-Core-i7-8650U-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4-20-GHz- You can manipulate the TPD between 10 & 25 Watt, which can also be very interesting. What I like about this NUC is the fact that it can be powered by the Sbooster BOtW supplies, and because of it's low TPD the chassis it will not overheat or even run hot. But I do not want the NUC version but a mini itx board + this cpu, and off course passive cooled. I also do not want a desktop i7 processor. I want the mobile version. The well known vendors such as Asus, Asrock, MSI, ... either offer passive cooled quad core boards, but without the processing power of a decent laptop, or mostly desktop variants with a very high TPD which is not suitable for a music server as it will run hot. 5 years ago our first design had a 17 Watt TPD CPU and did not run hot, and I'm positive these days you get an i7 spec processor with this TPD. Such CPU's can easily boot from a Trends PW 10 supply or Sbooster supply. But which brand? shahed99
Funny how I'm looking at similar compatible motherboard. Thin MINI ITX with DC input that can support the 8th generation CPU. I found two: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/PRIME-H310T-CSM/specifications/ https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H310M-STXCOM/index.asp However, I'm not sure these mobo can support SoTM/JCAT/PPA PCIE USB card. Can anyone confirm whether a PCIE USB card can be used with such thin mini itx mobo? Link to comment
rickca
The problem is that something like an i7-8650U requires an FC-BGA1356 and I don't think there are any mini ITX motherboards populated with such a SOC. The mini ITX motherboards all seem to have an LGA 1151 socket. So the best you can do is something like a 35W i3-8100T which has a configurable TDP down of 25W. SuperMicro BGA1356 motherboards currently are available only with 7th generation U-series CPUs. seeteeyou
Once we drop the TDP to 10W @ only 800 MHz, the performance should take a hit. Maybe go for Denverton with 9W TDP https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/atom/A2SDi-2C-HLN4F.cfm Another one with 16W TDP https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/atom/A2SDi-4C-HLN4F.cfm Link to comment
