Close mic'ing is fine, if the tonality of what has been captured is fully realised in the playback. Plenty of recordings have complex mixtures of both styles, and that causes no issues - you're listening to a multi ring circus of sound, and that can be quite fascinating to hear as a sound image; many layers all present, each distinct, but adding to the whole.

 

I was referring to close mic'ing in the contest of classical music. For "studio" genres it's inevitable and perhaps even part of the allure.
