USB or AES/EBU cable?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. My question is quite straight forward. I am running either a 16' run of USB out of Thinkpad, followed by an W4S Recovery into the DAC vs 3' USB into an Bryston DDC following a 20' AES/EBU cable into the DAC. I've had it set up both ways. Should either one be superior to the other? I have an idea, but looking for confirmation......

The recovery and the ddc perform different functions, so it’s not that straightforward to compare.

The equivalent would be

- 15’ pc to DAC In USB

- or 3’ pc to ddc in USB, 12’ in AES3

USB optimum length is 6’ or less, longer invites instability at high sample rate files. AES3 can run to 300’.

For this example, suggest

Thinkpad > 1’ USB > Recovery > 1’ USB > Bryston DDC > 12’ AES3 > DAC

AES3 is the newer name for AES/EBU and also easier to type.
