The Paul Hynes SR4 PSU

Recommended Posts

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your comments and the clear explanation of the concern. I will mention it in the Uptone Audio LPS-1.2 sponsored thread where I expect Alex or John to chime in.

Thanks for the SR4!

Much appreciated,

b.

I have posted this in other threads but thought I might mention it here as well. I have tried the SR4 ..

SR4@9V(custom cable)>LPS-1.2@7V(custom cable)>uR>USPCB(90deg)>Naim DAC-V1.

I am using the Audioquest NRG-3 power cord with the SR4 which I find to work well. The custom DC cables are silver plated OFC, 2x22 AWG in starquad and 10 inch long.

While I'm enjoying my SR4, on my Chord Qutest DAC I feel I have lost some of the sparkle/air around the instruments/voices that I heard with the stock power supply.  Paul assures me this will improve as the SR4 burns in, but currently I'm undecided and hoping things do indeed improve with burn in.

Is there any update for SR4 powering your Chrod Qutest?

I'm still running the SR4 powering my Chord Qutest.  Even after burning in, I still am missing some of the air/sparkle evident with the standard PSU, however the sound is definitely fuller and more impactful with the SR4.  I might be tempted at a later date to at least trial an LPS 1.2 to see how it differs sonically from the SR4.  I have no intention of selling the SR4, but I'm still not 100% sure it's the optimum PSU for my Qutest.  Time and further trials will tell.

I would love to have an SR4 to compare, but i had to choose one or the other.....

There is a comparison somewhere on CA where the poster (if my memory serves) preferred the LPS1.2 and ended up powering it with the SR4. I was not completely satisfied initially but found that a little cable tweaking bought together all the elements i was seeking.

A comprehensive review of the SR4 just in at audiobacon  here

Including comparisons to rival units, including the SR7 DR.

In short, he loves it (and the SR7)

Thanks for posting, it is a good read, with some interesting information.

I do have one issue with the article though, there are lots of comparisons with the SR7, which is "worth every penny".  OK, fair enough, but if I understand correctly, Paul Hynes is not taking orders for the SR7 anymore.

So if you are deciding between buying the SR4 or SR7, the fact that only the SR4 is available now might just be the deciding factor?

I am indeed negotiating with a CMC (contract manufacturing company) to take over production of key products. The company I have chosen can work to the highest standards. The first product will be the SR4. These are currently still being manufactured here in South Uist, but if the CMC can satisfy my build criteria, and maintain or exceed the current sound quality of the SR4, they will take over SR4 production.

I keep getting enquiries for SR7 products but I have closed the custom build service to new orders. However because of the interest in these SR7 products I have decided to reintroduce a limited range of SR7 with either standard construction or XL construction. The DR (double regulated) version will also be offered. These SR7 will be production engineered to suit automated assembly lines, but I am not planning to offer custom build options at this point in time.

Following on from successful SR4 production I will introduce the SR7 into CMC production later this year with a number of interesting products to follow.

Good job Paul! I doubt the custom SR7 manufacture was kind to your personal life.

Dave

A production SR7 is interesting.  Do you envisage that this would have the four position voltage selector similar to the SR4?  The SR7 with user selectable voltage settings would be a very compelling product.  I also presume that it would multiple outputs?

I guess what I am doing here is thinking what would be my ideal product. For me, this would be multiple outputs, each with user selectable voltage.  So something you could buy for your LPSU requirements now, but with the flexibility to power any future upgrades or reconfigurations in your system.  I am just thinking aloud here, I am not even sure such a configuration is possible.

Out of interest, is this how others would envisage a "standard construction" SR7?

A CMC based SR7 is VERY interesting and the four position voltage selector is very nice.

BUT multiple outputs mean a separate regulator for each output, that would make a multiple output SR7 rather expensive.

For me would a similar solution like SR4 with one output be more appealing.

At this point in time the SR7 configuration is not set in stone so some feedback from you folks about your needs would be help me configure the production range.

Thanks Paul,

my preference:

1.) Voltage selection like SR4 and from outside (if no compromise for SQ).

2.) One output, either Single or Double Regulation.

I'd go for one of these with double regulation. Definitely  single rail.

If you need more outputs buy as many as you need, perhaps a multi-buy discount if you buy 3 or more ?

First, Paul, congratulations on the highly complimentary review of the SR4 on Audio Bacon particularly how it held up against your own SR7.  The discussion of design concepts was also quite enlightening.

I DO recognize the benefits in general of linear vs switch mode power supplies but have been reluctant to spend large sums on LPSs which far exceed the cost of the device being powered.  The introduction of the SR4 makes using a high end LPS more approachable for me.

I have a number of places where an SR4, etc. could be used.  Here is a basic schematic of my audio system...

PC-based music server with Adnaco S3B Fiber/USB plug in board xmitter -> Adnaco S3B rcvr powered by 5V SMPS wart -> USB regenerator powered by 9V SMPS wart -> DAC

It would be helpful if I could get a recommendation for the best bang-for-buck application of an SR4...one to start.

I did also send this to your company email.

Hi Matthias,

DR (double regulation) is a significant improvement in my system and so far everyone else who has tried it. The more transparent your system is, the more you will get out of the DR upgrade.

There are several areas of improvement.

  1. The reduction of RFI breakthrough from the mains power system.
  2. The reduction of rectification artefacts.
  3. The reduction of supply inter-modulation by feeding the output voltage regulator (post regulator) from another voltage regulator (pre-regulator).

The result is an overall reduction in noise floor modulation and the reduced clutter reveals greater resolution of the low level information. The dynamic scale stability, image stability and timbre are also improved.

Hi BigGuy,

I have an Adnaco transmitter and receiver but I have been too busy to get it set up so I cannot advise you personally with this.

From experience every item of equipment can benefit from an improved power supply, some more than others. The only way to find out the best bang for your buck in your system is to try upgrading each power supply in turn.

The SR4 has 4 options on output voltage including 9v and 5v and can provide up to 2A of continuous current. Just check your equipment current requirement doesn’t exceed 2A and then select the required voltage and test each item in turn.

Paul

Thanks, Paul.

Interesting that you have the Adnaco xmitter/rcvr.  Would be great to get your thoughts IF and WHEN you install.

Improving all the power supplies makes sense to me albeit disposable income being available.  Hoping that you might have some guidance as to whether biggest effect would be at source or target end of USB signal path.  My thought is that bang for buck might be best with SR4 powering last device before DAC, e.g., USB decrapifier?!

Having multiple DC outputs on the SR4 makes experimentation less onerous.

What is current stock/delivery status of SR4s?
