Popular Post rando
Accountably takes in the compositions of numerous highly regarded Noëllistes highly improvised French Christmas carols by a current 'organist par quartier' at Notre Dame. Possibly the best currently available recording of this work. It wouldn't be Christmas without hand bells visited upon you by a nationally known choir. Finally, "The Nutcracker" performed by the Bolshoi in full. No suites hacking it apart to fit onto a single disc and very very importantly no hip hop/rap/crass modern updates or transfigural interpretations in the void of space or some other nonsensical setting. christian u, christopher3393 and Nikhil 2 1 Link to comment

sphinxsix
I actually usually don't listen to some particular 'Christmas mood' music during Christmas (I simply play the stuff I feel like hearing at the moment and BTW I hate most of Christmas pop music you can hear on almost every radio at the end of December and unfortunately for me even much, much earlier) so I can propose only some unorthodox 'Christmas' music.. How about : This one is maybe even more interesting: https://www.allmusic.com/artist/charles-gayle-mn0000806671/biography Link to comment

I have to admit that my Christmas music proposal was a slight provocation. I actually quite rarely listen to free jazz like this (but when the moment is right there's nothing like let's say Peter Brotzmann's 'Machine Gun'). As for this year's Christmas (my first ever in the Netherlands) music I will surely post the information about it on 'The Album of the Evening' thread. Link to comment

But for me it was quite right, I never listen to any Christmas music, maybe because I was growing up in the USSR where Christmas or any other religious holidays were non-existent and Orthodox Christian music in general is too syrupy to my ears. I had a many years habit of listening Bach's Weihnachts Oratorium in the very last day of the year though. Not anymore, almost every end of the year I go to India for a winter stay, and Christmas music is merely a nonsense there. Link to comment

It is divided into three main sections, each of which relates to an adapted text from Isaiah 58, 7-8. ’’Break your bread for the hungry, and those who are in misery, bring them into your house! If you see a naked person, clothe him, and do not recoil from your own flesh and blood. Thereupon will your light burst forth as the red dawn of morning, and your betterment will quickly grow, and your righteousness go before you, and the glory of the Lord will embrace you.’’ The chorus begins, not by chance,(‘’Break your bread for the hungry’’) with chords broken down through the instrument groups. First the recorders, followed by the oboes, and at last the strings. This broken motif results in a remarkable legato sequence before the choir sets in, with the initial motive as accompaniment. Out of this motive, a fugue runs between the singing voices, while the orchestra continues the broken pattern. The voices finally meet in homophony before the opening is repeated.'' Link to comment

I still have to write about the Dunedin Christmas Oratorio on my blog, but at least I've now been able to compare the Dunedin version of the Magnificat with two serious competitors, Vox Luminis on Alpha and Jordi Savall on Alia Vox. The good news is there are no losers, all three are just outstanding, see also here: https://musicophilesblog.com/2017/12/16/getting-seasonal-again-with-three-beautiful-versions-of-bachs-magnificat/ christopher3393 1 Check out my blog at musicophilesblog.com - From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Link to comment
