but I like to have AAC copies in iTunes

Why AAC? FLAC may be converted to ALAC to lossless quality.

You can store ALAC files in iTunes, and have it automatically downsample them when it syncs to your iPhone:

I do that; most of my files are lossless, and I sync 256 kbps files.

Why convert to ALAC?

You suggested using ALAC above, now you're questioning it?

Read the opening post. My library is FLAC. As we all know, iTunes doesn't work with FLAC. So, I need to convert the FLAC to something that iTunes likes, like ALAC, or AAC. Either way, its a converting process...

Another solution, which you almost suggested, is to have XLD rip to both FLAC and AAC in a single pass by choosing "Output Format: Multiple Formats" from the Preferences > General tab. However, stuff that missed this epiphany will need to be converted :)  Full circle....

Yes, this is not a bad idea - I'd still have to convert to ALAC first though.

Yes, this is what I do. Keep my local library in ALAC, which I access through Roon, and then have access to everything on my phone through iTunes Match.

I mostly use XLD to rip CDs to ALAC or convert from FLAC.

If you are going to pay for something, maybe just get Apple Music.  I still buy music for my home system but it's just more convenient to use Apple Music when mobile.
