HQP volume control to reduce gain?

Morning. My DAC/Preamp combo (Lampi Atlantic dac w/ Cary Slp-05 pre) has too much gain. I am using in-line attenuators b/w dac and pre to control the gain, but am searching for a different solution. I was wondering whether the max/min volume settings in HQP could be used to control the gain? If so, what setting ranges work best? Will sq (primarily dynamics) be impaired if I do this?

Yes, you can certainly use HQPlayer for the purpose. How much attenuation do you need?

I have my in-line attenuators set to 16db.

 

I have the max volume setting at -5 now. Do I go to -21 to add 16db attenuation? Am I going to kill the dynamics?

Yes, you can do it that way. It is fairly small attenuation so it shouldn't have adverse effects. When I'm using HQPlayer's volume control for controlling headphone listening volume, I have range set to -40 - 0 dB and typically the volume knob ends up being around -20 dB.

How should I set minimum volume setting? Or, do I just leave that as it was?

Wait, i am confusing myself. I am just not sure how this works. Do I need to reduce the max volume or the minimum or both? Sorry to be dense.

And, i just updated to the new HQP. I am getting a box saying I can only keep HQP open for 30 minutes because i am not registered. have my registration key. However, when I click on help/register, no registration box comes up. Just a finder kind of box for my PC.

When i hit register, I get the finder box and can find Signalyst. i can't find the registration box however.

So, I see own the Signalyst page that i need to get a new key. However, when i entered the old key, it said it was invalid old key. What now?

Making progress. Was able to get through change key box. I assume i will be emailed a new key? Not sure what to do then given that registration box won't open.

Hmmm, says I am supposed to receive a new key file. i assume that means by email. Thus far, no key. Hmmm, last time I updated, this went quite easy.

Anyway, how do i reduce gain by 16db? Take max down by 16? Minimum down? Or, both. I am going round and round.

Min and max sets adjustment range for the volume knob, which you can then turn to what ever position you feel suitable... When you turn the knob, the exact value is shown briefly in status bar.
