Popular Post esldude
As usual with Atlantic articles the profound part of it is in some of the comments. Besides, my generation was destroyed by TV. The preacher told us that in church every Sunday. Green eyed demon, one eyed monster, glowing satan in the living room. Technology just let everyone put satan in their pocket, and take him to bed. Moore's law works with evil too! Not saying the article doesn't highlight real problems, just that every generation grows up in very different circumstances in the modern world. Things used to change slower. Though kids have no perspective, one of the issues is you can nearly count on any advice and warnings being out of date when you receive them. Not sure what you do with that situation. Nikhil and Walcascar 2 And always keep in mind: Cognitive biases, like seeing optical illusions are a sign of a normally functioning brain. We all have them, it’s nothing to be ashamed about, but it is something that affects our objective evaluation of reality. Link to comment
wgscott
Less driving, and less (probably unprotected) sex. The world, indeed, is coming to an end. I hate cell phones, but I have trouble not seeing some of these as positives ... Link to comment
sphinxsix
@Jud Your OTs are just great! The good question is - how many more generations will be destroyed by smartphones? And what will the next object of 'cult' be.. I really wonder. Smarter than the owner artificial-inteligence-humanoid-friend-all-in-one something.? Or is it too early for that.? Link to comment

I hate cell phones, but I have trouble not seeing some of these as positives ... I am reasonably sure the author does too, with his comments about how kids are safer *from external dangers* than ever. He would, of course, like for us to have our cake and eat it too, so that diminution of external dangers wouldn't come with a side of suicide and kids who don't feel like getting jobs and leaving home. (Though particularly the latter seems to me as if it might have to do with various economic factors.) One never knows, do one? - Fats Waller The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. Allan F
IMO, smartphones have turned half the population into a bunch of zombies who have become slaves to their mobile devices. While distracted driving laws have been enacted in many jurisdictions, some people are seriously talking about the need for laws against distracted walking, given the dangers that offenders represent to themselves and others as they obliviously stumble along staring at their phones. Not to mention the antisocial sight of young people sitting together texting in some bastardized version of the language instead of making eye contact and talking to one another. Small wonder that they can't spell. "Relax, it's only hi-fi. jabbr
I had my 15 year old son read the article -- he thought that the reason for increased levels of depression in teens was more likely due to increased pressure (grades etc), and that the phones are a stress reliever -- he spends copious amounts of time snap chatting with cute girls so perhaps he has a point -- he also uses his phone to play chess when he's not at a sports practice.., Custom room treatments for headphone users. crenca
Interesting the article did not mention porn. I send my kids to the local Roman Catholic school (for academic and cultural reasons - I am not Roman Catholic) and they ban cell phones because they are gateways to porn (among other things). In the government schools, most boys (and something like 30 percent of the girls - going from memory) are regularly indulging in porn by 5th grade - mostly through the phone!! Unrestricted/unsupervised internet access for children is just silly for all kinds of reasons ... Hey MQA, if it is not all $voodoo$, show us the math! Link to comment

Natural instincts, tendencies and drives when supressed, denied or fought against just grow stronger inside and when they surface..(we all know what happened). It's not only the question of priests' celibacy but of the whole church's attitude towards sexuality. You simply can't deny we are sexual beings. That obviously doesn't mean I'm for kids access to porn Link to comment
christopher3393
I will tactfully avoid the important, interesting, powerful, tragic, but potentially contentious and passion-inducing issues mentioned above. Here's an interesting recent book I've browsed: Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked by Adam Alter: https://www.amazon.com/Irresistible-Addictive-Technology-Business-Keeping/dp/1594206643/ Blurb: "Welcome to the age of behavioral addiction—an age in which half of the American population is addicted to at least one behavior. We obsess over our emails, Instagram likes, and Facebook feeds; we binge on TV episodes and YouTube videos; we work longer hours each year; and we spend an average of three hours each day using our smartphones. Half of us would rather suffer a broken bone than a broken phone, and Millennial kids spend so much time in front of screens that they struggle to interact with real, live humans." Link to comment

cjf
I would say that its not just kids falling into the mobile phone trance but the adults just the same. I routinely look around me when in various states of "wait" be it at the car dealer, the line at the food store or even at traffic lights and am fully baffled by what I see each time. I mean these zombies cant even sit quietly for a brief moment in unassisted thought without feeling the need to reach for their phone! Are people really that bored with life that they cant pull themselves away from the screen for even 5mins to take in their surroundings and all the entertainment that the scenery has to offer? wgscott
I only just got a cell phone, and hardly use it, but if I am standing around a car dealership wasting time (happened a lot in this last week, fwiw), I will take the thing out and check my email or ConsumerReports ratings or something like that, or to check the location of whomever is picking me up.
