NipperDog
I love turning off the lights, closing my eyes and imagining that I'm in a small venue listening to some LIVE jazz. The constant chatter and clinking glasses only add to the realism of the experience and don't bother me a bit. I so wish I could have been in some of these clubs back in the '50s and '60s when these recording were made, but alas, this is as close as I can even come. semente 1 Link to comment

Ralf11
Bird & Dizz, Town Hall 1945 but they are playing 5 years ahead so counts as '50s Jazz at the Pawnshop has the best small club 'atmosphere' but is later and whitebread Miles live at the Plugged Nickel; Live in Europe 1967 but recordings may not be as close as you ever come: go to NoLa down to Frenchmen St. in the Marigny and have some food at Snug Harbor on the right night; if it's the wrong night for 50s/60s it'll still be the right night NipperDog 1 Link to comment
Popular Post AnotherSpin
Some of the best Coltrane recordings were live. Miles' Plugged Nickel was already mentioned above. Keith Jarret live output is awesome. Wayne Shorter live recordings from 2000s. Bill Evans' Village Vanguard, Sonny Rollins from the same venue. Joshua Redman Village Vanguard's album. Recent Village Vanguard recording of Christian McBride trio is very good as well. I am not sure avant-garde jazz recordings should be mentioned here as well, but most of significant recordings in this area were recorded live. Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, etc. NipperDog and sphinxsix 2 Link to comment

Popular Post Musicophile
Good list already. +1 especially on Ray Brown's Live at the Loa, Jarrett at the Blue Note, and Bill Evans' several Village Vanguard recordings obviously, including my favorite of them: Below some others, focusing as requested mainly on smaller Jazz club type venues, ruling out larger places like Montreux for example. Here are some of my favorites, including (obviously, if you know me) a lot of piano trio, not only from the 1950s/60s (I wasn't born yet then, but doubt that Jazz clubs have changed all that much when you count out the smoking).
