When I buy SACDs, how can I be sure they aren't just Redbook CDs that have been upsampled?

On some, (mostly classical), there is info in the booklet about how the recording was done. It can tell you, at least indirectly, what you need to know.

If the recording is old (before mid 90's) there wasn't really much hi-res recording to speak of. But an SACD could could have been made from an analog to DSD conversion (no PCM in there).

In fact, hi-res recording didn't really become moderately common till the middle of the first decade of THIS century, so anything before that is suspect, unless you have info about how it was done. And that is true, even today.

Main listening (small home office):

Main setup: Surge protector +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Isolation>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments.

Secondary Path: Server with Audiolense RC>RPi4 or analog>Cayin iDAC6 MKII (tube mode) (XLR)>Kii Three BXT

Bedroom: SBTouch to Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Setup.
Living Room/Kitchen: Ropieee (RPi3b+ with touchscreen) + Schiit Modi3E to a pair of Morel Hogtalare.

All absolute statements about audio are false :)
