Rotel amplifier and fuses amperage?

Recommended Posts

Hi - I own the following Rotel amplifier: RA-1570, specs can be found here: http://www.rotel.com/product/ra-1570

I live in Hong Kong and we use British (UK) plugs. My question is: I want to buy a new power cord for this amplifier, but I am confused about the fuses amperage.

Some have said 13amp, but based on the amount of wattage required to power the amp - would 10amp also be good enough?

I mean, it draws 120watts*2 and a total of 500watt if I am right?

No, that's the output power, not the power draw from the mains.  The specs say it draws 400 watts.  I don't know what internal fuses it requires, you'd have to check the manual.  I'm not sure why you need to know about the fuse requirement to buy a new power cord.  Any heavy-duty power cord should be sufficient.

I did have a look at the manual: http://www.rotel.com/sites/default/files/product/manuals/RA-1570-OM.pdf, but it doesn't say anything about the fuses. Fuse requirement is important, because of safety mostly. I am looking at a Russ Andrews reference powerkord, but it says that the amp is rated at 10amp, instead of 13amp. Now I would like to know if this potentially can cause problems to either my wall outlet or amplifier?

Specifically, this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Russ-Andrews-Reference-PowerKord-Kimber-Kable-Mains-Cable1-3-metres-Excellent-/232273326796?hash=item361491b2cc:g:oM8AAOSw32lYyvGH

Honestly, I'm not familiar with this product and the added tweaks.  I would email Russ and ask him if you want to be sure.

Don't know the voltage in Hong Kong.  220 volt for some outlets and 100 volts for others is that correct?

Okay 10 amps x 100 volts would be 1000 watts.  Your amps says it can draw 400 watts.  So 10 amp cord is fine.

If you run it off of 220 volts then 10 amps x 220 volts is 2200 watts.  Even better.

So in either case a power cord rated for 10 amps should be no problem for amp or wall outlet using your amp.

He's talking about a special 13 amp fuse that is sold as an upgrade with the company's Euro and UK cords.  I'm not familiar with electrical requirements in HK, which is why I suggested he contact the dealer.

This is for 120 volt versions.  Nothing over 8 amps in the power supply. These fuses should be the same regardless of voltage from the wall.  There is a switch for 230v vs 120 v operation.  So if he is talking internal fuses then 13 amps is not smart.   If it is a fuse that is part of the power cord no point in 13 amp over 10 amp.  One is not going to be better than the other.  So to answer his question, yes 10 amp will be good enough.
