buonassi
14 hours ago, STC said: after receiving certain number of votes it gets hidden good premise. Can this be explored further with CA site? It's interesting to say the least. Agreement or disagreement with a post isn't the cause of grief (for me at least). It's when things go off topic (often), resort to 'bickering' (not unusual), or devolve into personal attacks (more rare lately from what I've seen). Some witty sarcasm is actually a good thing as it brings flavor to the read. The challenge will be in delineating 'funny' posts from 'aggressive' ones. Even then, not everyone reacts the same way to, say, sarcasm and may feel aggrieved. At the end of all this exploring, there may not be a good solution here (if we want to avoid censorship) except to have a 'report post' and have one or several mods (volunteers) respond, and do so consistently. Popular Post Shadders
Hi, With the downvotes hiding a post - the issue is, why is the person getting downvotes ? If the person downvoting does not reply, the awareness of why the downvote will never be known. What if a person(s) persistently downvotes someone regardless of what the say ? It will be used as a form of chastisement, or people exhibiting a grudge. Again, i have been on a forum where you state a fact, on topic, and so many downvotes, and no one responded as to why they disagreed. There seems to be some sort of group think where i stated something against their unwritten ethos. When i look at this forum, there are a small number of regular posters, and they can be seen as objectivists and subjectivists. So what happens when one group begins to edit or delete the other groups posts (for what ever reason - you are not told). Or downvotes - for what ever reason you are not told. Again, the forum should be exactly as it would be in a physical setting, all views heard and not suppressed, disagreements vocalised as opposed to suppressed, edited, removed, or hidden. With so many forums or social platforms providing for only like minded people to discuss and talk, creating an environment where all agree with each other, it is unhealthy. STC
I prefer the OP having an option to hide rather than leaving it to readers. Mr X starts a post. Mr Y makes a comment. X hides the post. Readers can still read them if they want to and they can reply to it. If majority of the readers feel the post shouldn’t be hidden or the OP was abusing his privilege than CA could remove the privilege from him. For a while, there was a downvote button, but Chris removed it after a few people started abusing it in the way you describe. Link to comment

mourip
I have been using an ad-blocker plugin for a couple of years. Over the past year I have seen more and more sites using popups to ask me to turn it off. On more aggressive sites they will sometimes actually block my access. I understand this and appreciate the economic model that many websites work with. In the spirit of supporting Chris's work here and to fund his three legged dog I now have unblocked ads here. I would just ask one favor. Please consider not using ads that have motion in them or that follow you as you scroll.. Thanks for the great site!
