theppd
Gentlemen, currently I have the following network setup: Airport Extreme N standard > USB attached hdd over wifi to my MBP retina with AC wifi built in which currently doesn't make any difference. Current setup plays high res just fine via Roon but DSD drops completely after few seconds of playback which I can understand since the measured read/write speed now equals around 7MBps. So what I'm trying to find is the best suited network setup to stream my music via Roon to my new urendu. At first I've been exploring the simple setup like the latest high-end router with USB attached SSD. But have find out that almost every powerful router drops/freeses and reboots itself iccasionaly despite that it could deliver up to 100MBps over wifi which is what I'm looming for. On the other hand, routers that I love to use — the Airport Extreeme are ultra-reliable and stable but pretty slow (up to 20MB AC standard). Next option is to get a NAS which will solve the speed problem but it's bulky and overloaded with features I don't really need. Sorry for such a long post but any other opinions here? Thanks guys! theppd
So today I've tested how many MBps would suite my needs of streaming in highest bitrate available. And the answer is short: around 25MBps. Which makes the following solution perfect for me: NETGEAR R7000 (Which gives about 30 to 60MBps of reading speed (Which is even faster than my current USB2.0 external drive can handle while attached to MBP) and based on many happy reviews and tests it's one of the best routers available in terms of speed and stability) + Samsung T3 SSD. firedog
Haven't used it, but the new Synology router, the RT1900ac has gotten very good reviews as a "NAS" when a USB drive is attached. Main listening (small home office): Main setup: Surge protector +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Isolation>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments. Secondary Path: Server with Audiolense RC>RPi4 or analog>Cayin iDAC6 MKII (tube mode) (XLR)>Kii Three . Bedroom: SBTouch to Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Setup. Living Room/Kitchen: Ropieee (RPi3b+ with touchscreen) + Schiit Modi3E to a pair of Morel Hogtalare. All absolute statements about audio are false Link to comment

Well, yes I've read this review and didn't get it based on what they have loved it since it gives only 41.69MBps which is mediocre. Actually I'm thinking on getting one-bay NAS Synology DS116 + SSD and NETGEAR R7000 to get the stable 100MBps because I like speed) MacBook Pro + Roon > Airport Extreme > microRendu + mbps-d2s > Auralic Vega > McIntosh MC275 > Yamaha NS-2000 Wired with: High Fidelity CT-1 Enhanced RCA, Revelation Audio Labs, Fadel Art Coherence PC Link to comment
theppd
Talking with Roon support I'm a bit confused since to stream the music to urendu you have to keep the library and the Core as close as possible and stream it wired to avoid the latency issues. Which makes me confused... Roon will transfer the stream to the Core first, then to HQPlayer, then stream to the urendu which will make too much movement over wifi as far as I can see... Theoretically, I can keep the library directly connected to my Mac but I don't want it to be hardwired to the local network for the best performance for urendu... don't know what to do next... plissken
Is your problem network or is it player? I setup Foobar with the needed component add-ons to playback DSD files. I have 7.7 MBps connection and foobar played all the DSD files I threw at it just fine. What's your ping rate to the internal gateway? Link to comment
Audio_ELF
If using Roon ... how about sonicTransporter – Small Green Computer Just attach your HDD to the sonicTransporter via USB. Connect the sonicTransporter and your microRendu to ports on your Airport Extreme (or via another switch) and all done. It also completely frees up your MacBook (though you can still use the MacBook to control Roon if you wish). Personally I wouldn't use a router as a NAS. Eloise --- ...in my opinion / experience... While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing. And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism. keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out. Link to comment

So if I'll get the sonicTransporter, can I use HQPlayer to upsample the stream? Sorry I didn't realise you were using HQPlayer ... I don't think the sonicTransporter has enough power to upsample (best to check with Small Green Computers). Still interested) What's the best path here? 1) Synology DS116 and urendu > Asus AC88U > MacBook Pro (the path of the stream will be: from NAS to the router [wifi] to MacBook, then upsampled stream goes back [wifi] router to urendu) 2) urendu > sonicTransporter > Asus AC88U > MacBook Pro (the path of the stream is basically from sonicTransporter > Asus AC88U > urendu wired) 3) Used MacMini (Roon Core + HQPlayer) and urendu > Asus AC88U > MacBook Pro (The path is basically the same as 2. but it's future-proof solution + much more powerful) MacBook Pro + Roon > Airport Extreme > microRendu + mbps-d2s > Auralic Vega > McIntosh MC275 > Yamaha NS-2000 Wired with: High Fidelity CT-1 Enhanced RCA, Revelation Audio Labs, Fadel Art Coherence PC Link to comment
