Sound Galleries Music Server

On the back of the case, it's going to say "Hand built in Holland", even though the face plate is CNC machined ;-)

You'd want that to say "Hand built in the Netherlands". Unless you specifically want to refer to the province. But that would be strange as Pink Faun are not in that province.

You are right Rhenen is not in the province of North or South Holland !

"Hand built in Holland" is what it says on the back on the Pink Faun AV streamer with which the Sound Galleries Server shares heat sinks with. (everything else is different !)

Hopefully there won't be a stink about the geographical provenance of the Sound Galleries Music Server :-(

we could say, "Hand built in a delightful town less than 20 minutes away from Holland"

"Built near Holland with the aid of a CNC machine programmed on a CAD workstation with a hand operated mouse"?

BTW: does the pink faun PCIe I2S board have a driver that outputs DSD yet? Asking because I'd love to build a version of DSC1 (and DSC2) that takes I2S input...

What I meant to say is that most Dutch people, me included, refer to their country as the Netherlands, not Holland. Further to that, as per the ISO standards board the official country name is The Netherlands, NLD, NL.

It's been quite a while since we last tried Bughead Emporor, but with all of the recent posts we decided to spend some time this week running BHE on two of the Sound Galleries Music Server test mules. Some of the BHE settings sound pretty amazing. Again we find what sounds the best on one PC setup, is not necessarily the best sounding on another PC setup.

What has been very useful for us, is that the good sounding settings of BHE have given us an additional benchmark to further explore and refine HQ Player settings.

Right now HQ Player has the edge for large orchestral, but BHE has the edge in instrument solos. We are continuing to experiment with both softwares and gaining insight about which combination of settings works on the SGM 2015

Apologies for almost a month with no update on the Music Server

Here are the first three chassis which Pink Faun worked on last week

server stack.jpg

We have experimented more with Bughead Emporor and came to the conclusion that it produces are very enjoyable result for most PC's, but when the PC has very good timing precision, and a very low noise floor, HQ Player (with appropriately selected settings) is still the best sounding software player !

We know it may seem like we are singing our own song, but soon interested audiophiles will be able to hear the Music Server running the top player software and judge for themselves.

The first test sample of unobtainium which we ordered arrived for our testing and evaluation. The test measurements and noise graphs which came with it are the best we have seen in this performance class. Needless to say we are excitedly looking forward to listening to it installed in the server.

The custom power supply boards which are made in Sweden should be arriving next week.

The listening test of the unobtanium went very, very well - we are delighted. We signed off on the acceptance, and the first production batch is now in manufacturing.

I quote below a part of a post from John Swenson in the Schiit Yggdrasil thread

OCXO is Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator. The whole oscillator is placed in a small oven with a very tight control loop on the temperature to keep it very stable. Not only is the temperate very stable, but at a certain temperature the temperature coefficient goes to zero. Thus an OCXO can achieve essentially zero temperature coefficient. This isn't cheap, it costs a lot of money to do this well, so most OCXOs use very good oscillators to begin with. The result is that most OCXOs usually have very low jitter, not because of the oven part, but because by the time you spend a lot of money on the oven, you might as well spend a fair amount on the XO to begin with. Again you're spending a LOT of money on something you don't need. You do get low jitter, but you could spend a lot less money to get that level of jitter from a basic XO.

The problem is that it is usually hard to find a basic XO module with the really low levels of jitter, the manufacturers would rather sell you the very expensive OCXO so really low jitter XOs are hard to find.

In our experience what John say's is indeed the case, and for the Sound Galleries Music Server, we have stepped up to the plate and forked out, but boy the music does sound pristine :-)

The manufacturer understood that we were going to use the OCXO in an audio application, so they made an extra effort to optimize the clock specs for our project.

Apologies for the long silence ! We have been very busy with the project and the first batch of production models should be in assembly at the end of the month

The rollout has been delayed due to the need to redesign the case to handle the cooling loads which come from doing PCM to DSD 512 conversion. Along the way, we also upgraded the power supply to the motherboard which now has ripple in single digit microvolts

On the OS side we have made great strides in doing a Windows 10 build that has a small memory footprint and a low thread count

The OS has been set up so that HQ Player and Roon server have their own computing environments. It's been an awful lot of work, but the icing on the cake is the arrival of the T+A DAC 8 DSD

The sound quality of T+A's in house developed 1 bit converter fed with DSD 512 content from the SGM is simply amazing. All of the noise reduction measures that we took can be heard. DSD 512 on the T+A DAC reveals everything, but the payoff is the musicality, clarity, harmonic richness of both PCM to DSD 512 and DSD to DSD 512 that has to be heard to be believed

Good luck with your SGMS!

Sorry for the OT: do you know what filter order T&A DAC 8 DSD uses?

Here is the graph of the two filters available for DSD, sorry about the orientation :-(

TA filter.jpeg

The frequency scale is from 1KHz to 1Mhz

The signal level is -40 db on the x-axis of the chart

The "Wide" filter, which is the one we use for DSD 512 starts to have an effect at 30 KHz and is -2db at 90 KHz, -14 db at 300 KHz

By contrast the "Clean" filter is -30 db at 300Khz

The difference in SQ between the Wide and Clean filters is very noticeable, the Wide filter setting is a big part of the SQ magic of the T+A DAC

In DSD 64 mode, only the clean filter is available

The big surprise for us is how much better DSD 512 sounds than DSD 256 from HQP even though the Wide filter is used for both

We suspect that the quality of the HQP SDM at 512 is that much better than the SDM at 256. The filter set up time for the Polysinc family filters with DSD 512 as the output is much longer than for DSD256

It's good that Jussi has the green moving bar sweeping from side to side during filter setup. The long filter setup wait time is the only downside to DSD 512

Eurodriver,

will there be a demonstration of the SGMS at the HIGH END 2016 in Munich?

Matt

It's not planned to be demonstrating in Munich High End this year. We might well be demonstrating in Warsaw show later in the year.

I am looking forward to attending Munich as a visitor this year :-)

It would be a great pity, perhaps you could ask T+A to demonstrate your server in their rooms with their DAC 8 DSD. It certainly would be a win-win situation for both.

T+A have lots of dealers and distributors from all over the world to look after at Munich High End, and the thrust, quite naturally, will be the marketing the whole T+A product line

Hi Matthias,

Good News about Munich High End. Sound Galleries is going to be doing and event to launch the SGM on Friday May 6th.

The event will be in a nice 160 m2 space at BMW Welt.

BMW Welt and BMW Museum : Visitor information : Opening times

With this space we should be able to achieve a very good sound. Public visiting time will be from 2pm till 7pm. Then there is ticketed event from 7:30 to 9 pm with food and drinks

I will be visiting Munich next week to finalize the arrangements, and the special food and drink prices for CA and What's Best forum members

Both the T+A PDP-3000HV and the T+A DAC 8 DSD will be showing their sonic abilities

Look forward to see you there !

Hi Eurodriver,

that is good news for sure. Unfortunately, I am not able to attend on Friday. Would it be possible to switch this event to Saturday evening or offer some additional schedule at the weekend as probably most of the CA members who attend the HiGH END will be in Munich at Saturday? Just a question....

Kind regards

Better to take up leave. Less risk of getting fired that way when caught.
