Themask
Hi everybody, I need help to setup my systems based on SOTM-sms 100 feeding an Audio-GD NFB Dac by USB. The dac is with ESS Sabre 9018 DSD capable. Playing PCM files is trouble free, but if I try a dsf file, I can see that the file is played but there is no sound! I have tried with Logitech Media Server 7.9 with the DSD player plugin activated and the file type sate to native and dsdplay on LMS server side. On the SOTM side I have tried different values for the buffer and period count with squeeze lite activated without success :-( I have also tried with minimserver combined with minimstreamer and the parameters dsf:dopwav and dff:dopwav, still no sound with dsf files. What am I missing? Thanks in advance Serge Link to comment
ted_b
Serge, Welcome to CA. Which NFB DAC is that? Where is Minimserver installed? What does Minimwatch's log show (if all DSF files show errors that is where we begin). "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. ted_b
Could you set to info mode and rerun...then make a text file of it and attach/post on the Minimserver forum too. Simon is excellent and getting back to you. I don't know what the log is saying but the words "transcoding" are not good. There should be no transcoding. Dopes the rest of the verbose log show all the hundreds of files/directories it scanned? "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. Hi Serge, Are you certain the NFB-7 supports DoP (DSD over PCM)? I believe the SOtM-sMS 100 plays DSD files via its USB ouput as DoP, so requires the connected DAC to support DoP. I've had a quick look at Audio-gd site and there doesn't seem to be any mention of DoP support. However, they do provide an ASIO driver for Windows, which could well be for native DSD support rather than DoP. I'm not sure about the answer so...sent an email to the constructor. Meanwhile after few testing found that you can hear the sound but the volume level is very very low!Even to hear this, I have to almost set the volume knob on the preamp to the max and put ms ears very close to the speakers! Weird! Any other idea? Thanks Serge Link to comment
Cebolla
Yes, a very very low music volume can be a symptom of the DAC not supporting an inputted DoP signal. My Pioneer N-50 streamer, which has an internal PCM only DAC, does this if I get it to play DoP. It also masks the low volume with hiss/white noise. Cebolla
The NFB-7 implementation of DoP is extrange, in my system DoP works with Audirvana but i get no sound with HQPlayerWhich Audirvana version of DoP did you use: 'Initial dCS method' or 'DSD over PCM standard 1.0'? Also, what resolution of DSD files were you playing for both your Audirvana & HQPlayer tests (e.g single rate 64fs, double rate 128fs, etc)? I believe double rate DSD wasn't defined until version 1.1 of DoP, so this might be the issue. Cebolla
do you mean I will need a computer to play the dsd file with the Audio-GD NFB-7?Unlikely, though finding out why DoP input to the NFB-7 works from one software player and not from another would most likely explain why it doesn't seem to be working from your SOtM-sMS 100 hardware player. If anything it shows more hope as the NFB-7 does appear to support DoP in some form. The SOTM is connected between a NAs (RJ45) and directly to the DAC NFB-7 by USB. There is no computer involved in the chain, and I don't want to use a computer/software. Is this possible? I think what Cebolla is suggesting is if you could use a computer as a temporary measure you can try a few configuration options that aren't possible with the SotM. With the computer you may be able to get to the route of the problem and either SotM or Audio-gd may be in a better informed position to help you. I think the suggestion is that your NFB-7 may support only an earlier version of DoP (or perhaps a later version) which the SotM is not supporting. Eloise --- ...in my opinion / experience... While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing. And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism. keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out. Link to comment
ted_b
Guys, the SoTM server IS a computer. It supports DoP (all versions of DoP are supposedly backward compatible to 1.0), he has Minimserver hopefully set for DoP (he says he put dsf:dop, dff:dop in the stream.transcode block) and he is using some control point. Of course, it's also quite clear that the OP is using the SOtM to get away from using a traditional computer and its playback software. Cebolla
Guys, the SoTM server IS a computer.Well, yes of course it is - but why the association, when we we're clearly referencing a traditional computer running playback software? The SOtM is not being used as one of those as it's restricted to just doing its network audio playback/streaming duties, an important feature as far as the OP is concerned it seems. It supports DoP (all versions of DoP are supposedly backward compatible to 1.0), he has Minimserver hopefully set for DoP (he says he put dsf:dop, dff:dop in the stream.transcode block) and he is using some control point. I think the Minimserver log is our best weapon. The point of DoP compatibity was referring to the DAC itself, not the SOtM or more accurately MinimServer's transcoding function. If the DAC's implementation of DoP is at an older incompatible version, there's no way of MinimServer's transcoder automatically recognising that, even if it could make the adjustment through any supposed backwards compatibility. It's certainly worth checking the DSD file integrity via MinimServer's log. However, DoP transcoding by MinimServer appears to have working during the DSD file playback by the SOtM, as the OP mentioned hearing the telltale sign of a very low sound of music playing, ie, it's likely the DAC was seeing the DoP signal as normal PCM, rather than being triggered by it into the mode for receiving DoP. Question is, why? We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us. -- Jo Cox Link to comment
ted_b
Any time I've encountered a DoP incompatibility (especially the early days in late 2011 when marker/flags were inconsistent) the result is significant noise/hiss with a background of music. Is that what you are getting, Serge? You describe it as "no music" so I did not think of Dac DoP incompatibility, but as Cebolla points out, it is another one of the leading culprits here I guess. I assume you cannot borrow another DAC? "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. Themask
Hi Ted, Yes, "the result is significant noise/hiss with a background of music". I have to set the volume knob almost to the max to be able to hear the background "music". I don't have at the moment another DSD dac I will try to find one... Thanks Serge Link to comment
Cebolla
Serge, The NFB-7 does seem to support DoP in some way, as indicated by Juliocat (using Audirvana). Unfortunately, Juliocat didn't mention the actual setting used in Audirvana nor the DSD file resolutions used, which may help in further investigations. Obviously it's not working with your DSD files, Minimserver (or Logitech Media Server) providing the DoP via transcoding and pass through during playback by the SOtM sMS-100. Since you are getting a hiss/white noise and very low volume music, it indicates the NFB-7 is receiving the DoP signal, but not recognising it, so converts it to analogue as if it were normal PCM. I'm no MinimServer log expert, but the last one you posted does appear to confirm this, in that it is transcoding the DSD file you're playing to DoP without any issues. Incidentally, you haven't yet mentioned what resolution of DSD files you are streaming. Hopefully Audio-gd will get back to you on the NFB-7's DoP support, particularly if they can tell you the DoP version it supports and/or any restrictions on using it. John We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us. -- Jo Cox Link to comment
