Official TIDAL HIFI Streaming Issues Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm using BubbleUPnp for Tidal HiFi through JRiver MC22  as renderer to Oppo 105 DAC via usb. I have 7.1 Magnepan speakers. The front speakers are 3.6's. with a custom built Odyssey amp. DLNA is set in JRiver and Audio is set to Oppo ASIO.  I also have a new Asus ZENBOOK Pro UX501VW-XS74T laptop with TIDAL loaded with no dropouts. Comparing the sound between the two systems is very subtle. The same song going directly from the laptop to Oppo is a little bass heavy.  Bubble through JRiver has a slightly cleaner sound, without the heavier bass. They both sound great. I've been comparing music from the Masters collection of TIDAL. If you have had military service, TIDAL offers a military discount.

On many classical albums on Tidal, especially recent releases, the tracks are out of order. Have others run into this same problem?

Makes no difference whether I'm using Tidal app on Android or iPad, or the PC desktop app, or the web player, or through a Naim streamer -- in all cases the albums have tracks out of order.

Here are just a few of the many classical albums with tracks out of order on Tidal:

I see what you mean, the groupings are scattered. At least the numbers are in order. I'm just starting with TIDAL and I'm just enjoying the music for now. It would be nice if we could store our playlist into an alphabetic index or some other logical order. I contacted Oppo and they said that they were considering  incorporating the MQA Tidal Masters into the new 205 player. I'm still using my 105 as the main preamp for my Magnepan speakers. I play the Masters using JRiver as a renderer and Oppo 105 as a player via a long usb.

I am running Tidal on a Mac Mini, OSX 10.10.5 (Yosemite).

When I start up the app, I only get a small portion of the UI displayed, most of the useful regions including navigation just show black. When I move the mouse cursor over some of the regions I temporarily see flashes of HTML content.

I downloaded the latest version of Tidal today from tidal.com, and still had the problems.

The problem started a week ago, possibly after accepting a Mac OS update that was pushed to my machine.

A little help, please, with MQA and Windows 10?

I stream TIDAL via AudioQuest ethernet cable at >50mbps from a ComCast router to a dedicated Dell laptop running Windows 10, and then via Wireworld USB cable to a TEAC UD 503 DAC. TIDAL desktop does the initial MQA unfold.

From time to time, with no discernable pattern, a Master file will suddenly stutter, sounding like a 45rpm LP being spun at 33rpm. Advancing to the next track on the album typivally corrects the problem until it reoccurs.

TIDAL support suggests it's a connectivity issue, but the defect only happens on MQA, not on TIDAL HiFi, Sirius, or Spotify. TEAC support says their DAC deals with whatever arrives.

If anyone has encountered this issue or can even speculate on a workaround I'd be much obliged. I am unwilling to contemplate upgrading to a full MQA decoding DAC or to a streamer until I get a handle on this. Thanks!

OK, then. I checked the pass through box in streaming settings and attempted to stream the Master file of the Modern Jazz Quartet's Third Stream Music. DAC indicated 48k rather than unfolded 96k. A minute into the first track the music ceased and I received an error message as follows:

curl_easy_perform failed. Timeout was reached. Operation too slow. Less than 1 byte/sec transferred the last 5 seconds.

I immediately ran an XFinity speed check via Google Chrome which reported that my download speed was 64 Mbps.

I don't have a clue as to what is happening. What do you think?

Thanks.

Changing the DNS to Google 8.8.8.8. did not cure the stuttering issue that occurs during the initial MQA unfold every few albums. Changing the Dell laptop's power setting to Maximum Performance didn't help, either. Nor did setting the computer to airplane mode while connected via Cat 7 Ethernet cable.

Unless this board has more suggestions, I suppose that I will ignore MQA until I swap out computers or an affordable streamer or music player with decoding ability becomes available.

Thanks!

Is it possible to look at the task manager / activity monitor at the precise time the stuttering happens? It would be interesting to see if anything jumps out.

Unfortunately the occasional stuttering and 5 sec dropouts also happen in HIFI.

hello to all,

i'm using hugo2 with imac and tidal hifi. i'd like to confirm that exclusive mode enables direct communication from tidal to dac bypassing all osx interference//settings? here tidal has full control of the dac.

also does exclusive mode in any way change the way the hugo2's asynchrous usb timing works or any other internal workings of the dac? thanks to all

I generally do my streaming with a dedicated hardwired network consisting of a MacBook Pro (running most current updated iOS and Roon with Tidal integration), Netgear 7500v2 router, and dCS Vivaldii stack (through the upsampler). All the connections are generic Cat6 ethernet cabling.  This works well with Roon.

When I try to run the Tidal desktop app on the MacBook Pro to listen to hi rez MQA files, the Tidal app does not "see" the dCS upsampler (i.e. it does not appear as an option in the Settings/Audio/Streaming tab of the app).  I tried rebooting, reinstalling, reconnecting, etc endless times with no success.  In desperation, I tried connecting the MacBook Pro to the upsampler with a USB2 cable, and it worked; the upsampler showed that it was receiving 24/96 and the sound was excellent (comparable to playing a 24/96 hi rez file on my hard drive through Roon).  For the audio options, I selected Exclusive Mode, Forced Volume, and MQA decoding by the Tidal app.

The USB cable is a PITA.  Any idea why Tidal is not seeing the network?

The dCS Vivaldi Upsampler is a Roon EndPoint, as well as a UPnP renderer and an AirPlay audio receiver. Only Apple's own AirPlay network streaming mechanism is supported by OS X, such that the Mac should be able to present any AirPlay supporting device on the network as an audio output device to play to.

Therefore, if AirPlay is enabled & working properly on the Upsampler, you should be able to select it as an audio output device in the TIDAL Mac desktop app. However, Airplay network audio streaming is fixed at 16/44.1kHz, so the 24/96kHz MQA decoded signal will be downsampled through this mechanism.

You won't be able to select the Upsampler's Roon EndPoint nor its UPnP renderer (which unlike AirPlay would both potentially be able to network stream the 24/96kHz MQA decoded signal without resampling) as an audio output device in the TIDAL Mac desktop app, simply because OS X doesn't support their network streaming protocols as it does AirPlay.

We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.

Thank you.  I'll stop banging my head against the wall.

Using an earlier version of the TIDAL desktop app, it communicated by way of the network using Airplay but only at 16/44.1 as you predicted (both Airplay and 16/44.1 input were shown on the upsampler).  For whatever reason, the USB workaround has been successful (the upsampler shows no Airplay and 24/96 input).  I'll use the workaround until Roon integrates the TIDAL MQA feature (soon, I hope).

Yes, I am seeing this also.

I have been a Tidal subscriber since its introduction to the USA market and this is a new phenomenon.

Does anyone know what is going on?

I submitted a ticket to Tidal support to see if they can explain what is going on.
