Ryan Peterson
Hi I am new to this forum and hoping someone could help me understand something. I am going to use my computer's soundcard as my pre-amp and was looking at buying the Emotiva UPA-200 as my power amplifier. My question is this: My soundcard obviously doesn't have a 12v trigger output on it and I am wondering if the trigger input on the amp is required. If no cable is plugged into the amp will it be in an "always on" state? Or Will I not be able to get it out of standby mode by using a soundcard as the pre? Thanks in advance for any responses. Audio_ELF
There is usually a switch on an amp to "activate" the 12v trigger. In one position power on is controlled by the trigger, in the other position the amplifier is always on. Eloise Eloise --- ...in my opinion / experience... While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing. And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism. keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out. Link to comment
Ryan Peterson
On this particular amp no such switch exists and the manual is very vague on stating whether or not it is required. It only states what kind of plug and voltage requirements need to be met to use it. Though, the way it is worded tends me to believe that it is in fact optional. Link to comment

You don't need that trigger in order to have amp function. It only is there if you want to turn on your amp remotely through an IR sender or from a preamp. The front button is all you need to turn amp on. David Link to comment
