desbiss
Hi all, I have emailed Paul toward the end of December indicating my interest to upgrade my mid '07 Mac mini's stock brick power supply to one of Paul's linear PSUs, ideally one that will work with mine and a new mini (once mine dies). For the North American Paul Hynes PSU owners on Computer Audiophile, what sort of turn-around time did it take for you to get your hands on a Paul Hynes linear PSU? I've not yet had response from Paul to my emails. What were your observations of the improvements it provided? Thanks in advance! Link to comment
ted_b
Hi. Best bet is to search on "Hynes" here. we've talked about his ps's quite a bit. I love what his SR7-EHD (mine is the SR7-18V5) does for my CAPS V2+ server. Paul had surgery and had been bedridden with post-operative issues and is therefore even further behind then he likes to be. Once he acknowledges your needs and commits to something it will be about 6 weeks or so (possibly less but I like reasonable expectations). "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. Audio_ELF
This thread on another forum may answer your questions... where are you Paul? I do have a vaigue recollection reading that Paul is (or was) ill or in hospital for an operation so that may explain why no reply. Eloise Eloise --- ...in my opinion / experience... While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing. And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism. keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out. Link to comment
simonhiggs
I ordered a couple of SR3 PSUs last year from Paul. Took 17 weeks to arrive, and during this time emails to check if he had received the bank transfer, or progressing the order weren't answered. I understand from another forum this is usual. wappinghigh
17 weeks! Whilst it is unfortunate if Paul is sick and recovering from Surgery (nobody deserves this), what sort of small business operator doesn't have some sort of cover, or hasn't planned for things that life can throw up every now and again? Someone he is training up or whatever. Basic business 101. This sort of thing is rife in CA land. Particularly specialised stuff and modding and the like. wappinghigh
I mean in 17 weeks the Chinese could of copied the entire product line, manufactured it and be selling in bulk on ebay.. Whilst no one disputes the difficulties of running a startup, the guy with all the ideas and IP has to plan for the possibility he may need to run production from his sick bed... the value is in the ideas, the IP, sharp customer service, and marketing to folks who want your products.. Not in the actual manufacturing. If he is falling that far behind there should be others doing the manufacturing. Or is skilled labour that hard to outsource or find?.. ted_b
C'mon now Wap!! Geez! One person on here said 17 weeks; that's unfortunate. I've bought 3 things from him, and ran his US tour of his SR3-12. On average his delivery was 5-6 weeks!! If Paul was always 17 weeks he would not have a business; and he does. Feel free to email him, or I'll ask him to come on here and reply. But the best bet is to go to his very active (and generally happy) owners circle on Audio Circle. "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. desbiss
Thanks for the quick replies all! Guess I'll just need to be patient on this one. Ted - it sounds like you have a bit of a relationship with Paul. Wish him a speedy recovery for me. My Gmail will await his reply. Worthwhile investment on a Mac mini? I'll state that swapping my hard drive for a SSD was a very noticeable improvement. Am hoping a swap to a linear PSU is a comparable improvement... Link to comment

Yes, my SR7-18V5 was originally designed and built for my late 2009 Mac Mini. It worked great. Paul made me two umbilicals so i could use it with a plain dc plug too (dialed down to 12V from 18.5V). kevalin
I ordered from Paul two chassis in December. Yes, he is a one man show. There is change in the works for a manufacturing facility but that is a year or two away. He told me that there now is a four month lead time and growing daily. Like Steve Nugent, he is being recognized for his quality work. He will get back with you and I have been in dialogue about two chassis system that provides linear power to each aspect of the Zuma. My point here is that he is willing to work with you and push the envelope, trying new ideas. With his current commitments I feel fortunate he is willing to look into it. His contributions to empirical audio are a game changer in my opinion. If you order anything from steve, hynes mods are a must. For me this is an evolving hobby. I can use other supplies and await a quality supply patiently. He is man of character. He will get back with you and your patience will pay dividends. Link to comment
wappinghigh
^Hey Ted. Ouch. Guess I had that coming for being such a troll. I did say I was expecting a right ol' scolding. hahahaha.... I mean well in my comments. And no disrespect to Paul....I don't know the guy and wish him and his business well.. heck anyone trying new stuff exploring and making this wonderful hobby better should be 100% supported... but this time I put on my cold hard consumer advocate hat and merely say an order to delivery time of 17 weeks is to long. Even 5-6 weeks is to long Ted. Bring on all these small businesses Ted. I want them *all* to flourish. I'm simply saying focus on your strengths.. the ideas, the passion, making the products better and leave the manufacturing stuff to an apprentice or other lower skilled worker..or outsource... grow ya business... then everyone benefits. The customer (faster turnaround), the hobby, the economy and best of all the owner of the business: like Paul himself. Cheers. ted_b
This is from Paul, posted today on his AC owners Circle: Back to work at last! Thanks to all who posted or e-mailed their support and details of what to expect during recovery. This was a great help as it allowed me to go through the whole process without too much concern, although having your internal organs re-organised through a six inch cut in your abdomen, is not what I would call a walk in the park, as suggested by some in their e-mail. I am back in the office today but only part time for the moment. I will be restricted to light work, for a few weeks, as the hernia repair recovery continues. At present it is not possible to sit at the workbench, due to the pressure caused on the hernia repair when I lean forward to proceed with the assembly of products. I can sit at the computer for reasonable periods of time as I can sit in a more laid back posture without having to lean forward. Until I can work at the bench properly I am going to use the time to do some much needed computer maintenance and admin work. The computer keeps crashing and at this point I am not sure why. It has taken three reboots just to get this notification ready for posting. I will also try and get through answering the rather large backlog of e-mail that has accumulated in my absence. Once the computer is operating properly again I will be able to access the data required to develop a plan of action to catch up with backlogged orders. There are a lot of orders in the build schedule so this catching up will take a while. Fortunately most of my customers have been very understanding and supportive. On a darker side, several customers have shown no understanding, perhaps because they have never experienced an operation and the mandatory recovery period afterwards. For the record there is no point in sending repetitive e-mails demanding priority. The ordering terms clearly state that time off due to illness will extend lead-times. I mean you no disrespect, but if lead-time delay was something you were not prepared to accept, you should have refrained from ordering in the first place. Your order is in a queue and it will be processed accordingly. Regards Paul "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. ted_b
Wap and others, Paul's power supplies are custom orders and hand built. If you don't accept his lead times (which includes shipping from the UK, and will be longer than Wap's "5-6 week unacceptable" example) then do not order. But unless you don't like his product it seems pointless to bash his business model sight unseen (or unheard). My $.02 "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T. twist222
Desbiss, I have a Paul Hynes SR7 running my 2009 Mac Mini. For me the SS drive and ram upgrade made a minimal improvement. In fact at that stage it was not a good as my G5 Power Mac. The major improvement in my system was when I connected up the SR7 to the mac mini. The wait was soon forgotten but the improvement is still there. They are not a cheap power supply but they are well made and work great. I would not go elsewhere if I needed another power supply. Flange
I have a Paul Hynes linear PSU for my Macbook Pro and it produced a distinct increase in definition and soundstage in my system. I have a current order with Paul for a PSU for my dac and whilst acknowledging that there is a waiting period - I would not place this order with anyone else but Paul. The reason that there is a waiting list is because his products are in such demand across the world. I have known nothing but courtesy and patience from Paul and wish him all the best in his recovery from his hernia operation. Link to comment

Mike Gillespie
Just wondering... I'm building a Zuma... and was going to get Paul to do the LPS for the SOtM USB and the MOBO, but then Chris C raved about Vinnie Rossi's Red Wine Audio Battery PS. Has any one compared Paul's LPS to battery? I was thinking -- maybe naively -- that Chris might have mentioned Paul H in his Zuma build as an alternative LPS supplier, etc. While I wait the month or so for the Red Wine, I have a 12 volt Bolder custom made LPS that will do the Zuma MOBO, and getting the Ted B discount, I'll get the double battery SOtM from Sonore. Then I'll compare them to the Red Wine. MG555 Link to comment
