astrotoy
Reiner Chicago Symphony on RCA. There is an SACD version. Original was on vinyl. I have both and also the Classic 45RPM reissue which is quite fine. (BTW, both the Reiner and Sargent originated some 50+ years ago). Is there a better performance / recording? I like it - it is Everest sound at it's very best, however be aware that there is some significant speed instability at times in this remastering which may or may not annoy you. An equally good one with more intimate sound is the Mercury version with Antal Dorati, however unless you buy the Speakers Corner vinyl version (which has sound as good as the Everest), the only other version available is the CD transfer made in the 90s. This is not as good in terms of sonics, most likely because analogue to digital conversion technology was not as good 20 years ago as it is today, the sample rate is a liability and 16 bit word reduction algorythms are far better now than they were 20 years ago. pescholl
I have all three versions mentioned above and they're all good. For more modern recordings I would suggest: Jarvi, Cincinnati Orchestra, Telarc, 2008 Dutoit, Montreal Symphony, Decca, 1987 Link to comment
