Odd problem with SoundSticks (original version) - only one channel is reproduced

Mentioning Soundsticks on an audiophile forum is already odd enough, but just in case anyone can offer insight, here is the problem I've got.

 

When the Mac OS X System Preferences is set for headphone audio output true stereo is delivered. However, when the USB Soundsticks are selected in Preferences and the identical audio file is played back, both Soundsticks reproduce the right channel only.

 

Any ideas about the cause/solution here?

if I remember well the mac setup you have to select left speaker with "1" and right speaker with "2".
