Soundbreaking: Episode 1 | THE RECORDING ARTIST

Just a real short post today. If you haven't heard about the new PBS series called Soundbreaking, you must check it out. Here are some paragraphs from PBS about the series. In addition, I've embedded the first video into this post. I hope members of the CA Community from locations that don't receive PBS can watch this series. It's very cool.

Note: If you're a supporting member of PBS, you can actually watch the other episodes before they air.

"The eight-part series explores the art of music recording, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the birth of brand new sounds. Featuring more than 160 original interviews with some of the most celebrated recording artists of all time, Soundbreaking explores the nexus of cutting-edge technology and human artistry that has created the soundtrack of our lives."

Episode 1: Soundbreaking begins where a recording does — at the intersection of inspiration and execution. Profiling some of the most accomplished and revered producers in the recording industry, “The Recording Artist” offers a study in contrasting styles and approaches.

Bummer. Hopefully someone here will show everyone a way to watch it regardless of geographic area.

Anyone have a VPN or proxy suggestion? I tried using Tor and setting it to only route the find endpoint through the US, but that didn't work.

Try a VPN with settings to US?

But I admit, I downloaded a torrent of it: TV show, public TV, don't feel to bad about it.

Good show, well done. I'm hoping we also get some face time with the late George Martin in one or more of the episodes.

Free ones? The easiest one is the Hola browser plug-in, but it doesn't always get around the restrictions.

IME, the best free one is the Soft Ether VPN. A slight pain to setup, but gives access to lots of VPN servers around the world and seems to be able to "fool" all the restrictions.

Don't use that: they re-sell your bandwidth to others without telling you. If your bandwidth is used for illegal activities by the third parties buying it, such activities might be traced to your computer on top of the extra bandwidth being stolen from you.

You really aren't missing much. I was very disappointed in the first installment of the series. All it was comprised of was a string of partial rock and pop performances, supposedly forming the framework to discuss the function of "record producers". There was nothing really technical in the show, and I quickly became very bored. Maybe the series will get more interesting as it goes along, but from the preview of the next episode that I saw last night ("The Birth of Multi-Track"), it's just more narcissistic pop and rock musicians showing how they use multi-track to do duets with themselves and multiplying their voices and instrumentation by laying down multiple tracks; one on top of the other.

I loved it but then I know very little about the music producer role. Just had to buy the Righteous Brothers collection on HDTracks after they played a song, pure nostalgia.

I'm facing the same issue. Weird that I cannot see this in Costa Rica.

Just watched the 2nd episode about multi-tracking. Thought it was better than the first. Was interesting how multiplying tracks and over-dubbing changed at least popular music. Was a bit surprised no time was spent on rap this episode.

So you see the arc of the tech allowing more tracks and more effects and eventually unreal or unplayable music. Eventually becoming too much. Too many tracks. Too open ended at least for some. I liked what Roger Daltrey said. Once you go past 16 tracks you really aren't helping yourself any.

I really like Fleetwood Mac and have always hated Tusk. I felt it ruined the band. Unlike the comments on the show, no not everyone has come around. I think it still sucks. After that at least some people went back to simpler approaches by recording in basements, or homes or places without the studio. Then of course digital gave everyone not just too many track and effects, but near infinite tracks and effects even at home with just a little gear. So what technology giveth, human temptation to sin taketh away. And as some lady near the end of the episode said was this is where we are today where we find ourselves. Between so much and paring it down so the technology doesn't overwhelm. (paraphrased of course)

Nord VPN works well - good streaming rates.

I'm binge watching the other episodes tonight. If this series doesn't make you want to listen to a bunch of music, then you have no pulse. What a fabulous series.
