Two More Complimentary 24/176.4 HRx Downloads Courtesy of Reference Recordings

HRxTM.jpgOnce again CA supporter and industry leader Reference Recordings has supplied two complimentary high resolution audio tracks for Computer Audiophile readers. The first two HRx tracks offered by RR in 2009 have been downloaded and enjoyed by thousands and thousands of readers. The next two tracks are from RR classics Thinking About Bix and Reveries. The tracks are offered in stunning HRx 24/176.4 quality. As many readers know HRx is a trade name owned by Reference Recordings. It means so much more than simply high resolution 24 bit / 176.4 kHz audio. HRx material is an exact copy of the digital master files directly from Reference Recordings or an analog to digital transfer using the highest quality process in the industry. There is no upsampling from a lower sample rate. The HRx logo should give audiophiles piece of mind that what you see is what you get.

IIRC, the TC Electronic Impact Twin shows the SPDIF interface as only capable of a single channel at 4fs - the table in the manual is identical to that in the 8 and 24D manual which was confirmed to me (by TC Electronics support) to NOT support 4fs properly via SPDIF.

As commented the FireFace 400 works. Lower priced I've heard that the M-Audio ProFire 600 will do 192 via SPDIF (though never been confirmed). Once you're up at these prices, if you only need output, then consider the Weiss INT202 or for I/O there is the Weiss AFI1 - nether much more expensive than the FireFace if pure SPDIF is all you're interested.
PS. sorry you're talking about inputs aren't you!

The TC documentation is not all that clear, that is, some versions convey different impressions of capabilities than others!

And finding 4FS rates at under $1K for SPDIF is pretty hard to do- RME now has some boards with optical input claiming 4FS support, but if you've got a coax drive, spending $400 on 4FS capable coax to optical converter seems silly (I know of one, from Radio Design Labs, it's more than just optical, it's a jack of all trades for goes-into to goes-outof.

Hi francisleung - I'm a little lost trying to figure out what's happening but that doesn't necessarily mean much. So you've downloaded the files and played them in iTunes correct? If so, the files are already saved in your iTunes library by default.
RME HDSPe AIO and HDSP 9632 (PCIe and PCI versions of same card basically) say they support 192k I/O over SPDIF though use a breakout cable.

Cost around £450 for the PCI and £300 for the PCI versions.
Hi Chris,
I am really grateful for your prompt reply.
Sorry I did not make it clear enough. My so called "download" from your web has a black background and in the centre of it is an arrow that is the play button. It operates by the Control-click and I am able to listen to the track. However the track was NOT saved after it has been played. I was trying to locate the "save" option mentioned in the instructions in your web but in vain. The help I asked of you is how could I save the track into iTunes. I have checked iTunes again just now but could not find the track because if it were there, several of such tracks would have been saved because I tried a couple of times. And also when a particular track is played there is a loudspeaker mark adjoining it in iTunes. When I listened to the track in the "download" with the "black" background I mentioned, and looked at iTunes to locate the track, the loudspeaker mark was in fact at the previous track that I played. And if I use the Control-click, the previous track played but not the RR track.
Many thanks.
Francis

Their SPDIF is optical- those were ones I was referring to. Good boards, though.

Option click the file type you want (AIF) and it should download. If you just click it, it will play via quicktime in a new window.

jon ... if you're referring to the RME cards, they have SPDIF via optical and also via co-ax through the 9-pin connector and come with the correct breakout cable for SPDIF IIRC.

Another option (that I'm discussing elsewhere) which is much cheeper is the EMu 1010 PCI and PCIe cards: again both co-ax and SPDIF input and output. Have you tried those - around $150.
After you download (aif in my case), right-click the file in the download manager, choose option "show in Finder". When you located the file (download folder in my case), right-click and choose option "open with iTunes". This saves to iTunes by default, as Chris said. Cover-art and other metadata is perfectly OK. If you already downloaded, just search with finder.
I bet you did not pick the aif, which is the most convenient for iTunes/Mac

Chris,

Thanks for the tracks! Not my favourite music, but nice nonetheless. Now, all I have to do is buy a DAC and software that can play this as it's supposed to...

Many thanks to Forrest and Erwin. I think my problem has to do with the Macbook Air that does not have the right click function. It only has single or double click and thus I am unable to double click "the file in the download manager" and then choose the option "show in finder" and the subsequent option "open in iTunes" as so kindly pointed out by Erwin. The "downloading" was in AIFF format and was played via Quicktime. No problem up to this stage and I am able to play the track again and again through the DAC in the sound system. It is only that the track is not in the "download" file and also I cannot save it into iTunes. With the other type of "download manager"--the one previously used here and by HDtracks, Linn and others from which I buy tracks with this same Macbook Air, the download function is activated but not in the present type. I searched and tried all possible keys again this morning but still failed.
Thanks again and I will try a desk top iMac with a mouse later.
Don't you have an old mouse lying around that you can connect to the Macbook Air? I am going to the Apple store Wednesday and will check what you said about the "disfunction" of the right-clicking with the MBAir...

Excuse me if this is redundant. Try holding down the "option" key on a mac keyboard while clicking. When I did it that way the the download window automatically came up. Then you may have to find it. It should be in a download folder. Unfortunately there maybe more than one download folder.

Really you may just need to use a mouse with a right click.

Hi francisleung - Your MacBook Air is completely capable of right clicking. I have an Air and use right-click all the time. You need to enable the Secondary Tap under track pad settings in System Preferences. Then tap two fingers on the track pad at the same time and it's a right click. See image below.
Erwin, Many thanks for your offer to help. I got one of the tracks saved in iTunes just now based on the guidance of Chris below. I quickly come back to report and thank you and Chris before handling the second track.

Many thanks Chris for your computer lesson that I fully appreciate is beyond your scope of offering help. Although the Secondary Tap in my Macbook Air has fewer options than yours and only one check box, I was able to follow your guidance and got one track saved in iTunes. It worked like this: As soon as I had the "right click" fixed, the "downloads" register or window was activated in same manner as the "old" system, hence downloading was achieved.

Try 'Option-click' that's the same as "right-click" on Macs that don't have a right-click button. Should give you the download option.

Thank you George. I am grateful for all those help being offered. I will try out the "Option" Click later when there is a need to download again since I just finished handling the two tracks based on method suggested by Chris.

Having learned the skill from Chris, I was able to download and save 6 tracks from a web in Taiwan. Previously I erroneously thought the company’s offer for “downloading” was for listening only because I could not save it. 3 formats are provided and I guess readers here would only download the 24/192 and 24/96 and skip the 24/48. I have translated below the titles as well as the messages the music intends to convey. For information on the instruments guzheng and erhu and the mood they express, please look up Wikipedia. The site for downloading the tracks FOR FREE is:
http://www.mediatek.com.tw/big5/03_product/07_SpecialSite/TS/index.htm
1. ???? meaning big mountain and running water: guzheng solo
2. ????? (two) peacocks flying east and south: guzheng solo
3. ???? Number Two spring reflecting the moon: erhu solo
4. ??? water of the river: erhu solo
5. ?? listen to the pine: erhu solo
6. ?? moon night: erhu solo

?? This word means download. Please right click it and choose “save” when it and other options appear, in same manner as you download the Reference Recording tracks here.

1. ???? This term is used to describe someone who knows how to appreciate music or someone who is an intimate friend. The ancient story tells of a highly skilled guzheng player when one day he played in the mountain, a logger approached him and asked whether his music was describing big mountain and running water. The guzheng player considered the logger the only person who understood his music and when the logger died, he smashed his guzheng and never played again.
2. ????? The music is based on an ancient Chinese poem that describes two lovers who committed suicide because of pressure from each other’s parents. Family of the girl wanted her to marry someone else (in ancient China marriage was dictated by parents) and that of the boy also wanted another choice. The girl could do nothing but jumped into the river whilst the boy, learning of her death, hanged himself. After the tragedy the two bodies were buried together.
3. ???? This was the hot piece performed by a blind musician called Ah Bing, with the title being imposed by others. Rather than describing the second ranking Spring in China, the music may be interpreted as telling the difficult life of the blind man himself.
4. ??? A piece that talks about another tragedy. A man was drafted into labour camp and died there. His wife, after learning of his death, went to the riverside where she saw him off and used her blood and tears to air her broken hearted feelings.
5. ?? Another piece frequently played by the blind musician Ah Bing. It describes the hero Yue Fei of Southern Song Dynasty, who defeated the army led by the chief of Jin Kingdom. This defeated chief pressed his ear against the rock below a pine tree to listen to the sound of the envoy of the pursuing hero.
6. ?? This was composed by a Mr Lau in 1918 during a night with bright moon and finalized in 1924. It expresses his passion for nature, his inner thoughts and feelings
The Sound Guy
The link was correct at the time and reader Erwin S reported he downloaded the tracks and found them enjoyable.
For reasons unknown, the site was cancelled recently. I tried several times on different occasions to see if there were other additional tracks for downloading or for purchase because of their high quality, and found the same fact as you. I used Google to search the company in Chinese. Somehow, the company was found in the yellow page as well as employers commentary web but no company site was provided.
When I find the link again I will let you know.
