    The Tides They Are-A Changing - Jay Z #TIDALforALL

Nothing compares to celebrity when it comes to getting the word out and garnering support for a product. Since Jay Z's company recently agreed to purchase TIDAL, the service has gone from being well known in HiFi circles to being pushed by artists like Kanye West, Madonna, Coldplay, Rhianna, Beyonce, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk and more. It's really cool to see a product that many of us love for streaming lossless audio quality, be sprung into the mainstream. In a way it feels like our "HiFi baby" is leaving the nest. Tonight at 5PM Eastern Jay Z will stream a live press conference about the re-launch of TIDAL. It's expected TIDAL will announce some exclusives from artists like Kanye West and a second tier of service. TIDAL HIFI will remain lossless at $20 per month if purchased through the TIDAL website or $26 per month if purchased through the TIDAL iOS app (increased price because Apple takes a 30% cut of the sales price). The second tier of service is called TIDAL PREMIUM. This tier will stream 320 kbps MP3 quality and retail for $10 direct or $13 through the iOS App Store. I confirmed both the streaming quality and pricing with TIDAL headquarters in Oslo, Norway this morning.

I prefer to own a house (asset) so I look at my music the same way. Not kidding. ;-)

No problem with that. But, if I could rent the best houses all over the world and have unlimited access for the price of a single house I'd probably go that route.

I use music services to find what I really like to buy . I actually save money when factoring in the 20/month because I no longer buy mediocre to good albums . I only buy what I rate as excellent .

I think there are quite a few users that follow this methodology .

I am buying fewer CD's for sure though .

Yeah, I used Spotify (free) for this purpose. Works fine but I have no need to pay $20 per month to rent my music.

I agree many people use your same methodology. I used to use MOG to preview albums then purchase the CD. With TIDAL I'm pretty much streaming everything.

I like to hear what I might buy in Flac as that is the closest I'll get to the actual CD .

I think that's where I'm very different. I don't buy solely based on the actual recording quality. If I like the music, then I buy it. That really is the most important part to me.

Let me rephrase , I'm not buying based on recording quality, but I feel I hear more of the recording if it's in something like flac

Yeah, same thing. I buy based on the music...the meaning. I don't need high quality for that...

Given that many folks in audiophile circles dislike CD quality, I'm kinda surprised at the enthusiasm for TIDAL.

So how many music streaming services can actually profit in this market? I think there is going to be a big shakeout at some point. Not sure enough people care about lossless to give Tidal a leg up. Honestly, more people probably care about Kanye than lossless.

I like cd quality just fine and am too cheap to go crazy on hi - res purchases , some of which sound worse then a cd .

The number who dislike CD quality is a tiny but vocal minority.

This the key IMO. This will give Spotify et al a run for their money and maybe, just maybe, Joe Six-Pack will trial CD quality. Who knew?

    Chris,

Have you heard anything about MQA under new Tidal ownership? Are they still planning to support Meridian's encoding in the HiFi $20/mo tier?

I wonder if Spotify will do the reverse now and offer a lossless tier. For my musical tastes Spotify has a better catalog, but I like TIDAL's quality so I subscribe to both.

I'm hoping the relaunched Beats from Apple has a lossless tier.

I talked to them about it last week. I don't think there is anything definitive yet.

Below are some interesting tidbits on the new Tidal business model. Looks like we'll see content exclusivity windows and bidding wars a la Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go in the video space.

"TechCrunch reports today, citing an article published in Breakit, that musicians are going to make their albums available first on Tidal before bringing them to Spotify and other streaming services after a period of time. That would make Tidal the go-to place for fans of artists like Madonna, Beyoncé, and Kanye West, as their music would be available to stream only on Tidal before reaching sites like Spotify several months later."

"There's another big incentive for stars considering bringing their music to Tidal: Money. TechCrunch says that Tidal has been offering to pay artists as much as double the payouts offered by Spotify for every play of their songs. Tidal charges a far higher price than other streaming sites, costing as much as $20 a month for its high-resolution music. That money could be going toward persuading artists to sign up through generous deals."

Hopefully, they'll still incorporate MQA. Seems like a great differentiator and added justification for the premium price. If Tidal doesn't, maybe it will push Beats/Apple to do so though that is a long shot. In any case, if MQA really incorporates original source recordings with their promised encoding/decoding benefits in a 1200+/- kps package, then premium streaming services would pretty much provide 95% of my music content needs.

I have some issues with Tidal's mobile app and fewer (but not no) annoyances with the Tidal Mac desktop app, but on the whole I'm enjoying Tidal. One thing I notice, though, is that Spotify seems to have a much larger library than Tidal, so even with all the musician-centric incentives, I believe Tidal has an uphill climb.

And while that's happening, along comes Apple, and poof, game over.

    Just my opinion.
