CATV Episode 6 - QNAP HS-251 Silent NAS, Lumin L1 NAS

I don't think you can do this at present time.

You can now connect one of the L1 USB ports to the Lumin renderer, though and play music as it acts like a USB disc (in this case by using the renderer built-in uPnP server).

Lumin confirms testing the L1 with a 2TB disc.

The disc used is Toshiba 5400rpm silent HDD.

I would ask this question on Lumin's Facebook site.

According to Lumin, yes you can...

I asked this question via a email :

    Thank you for the information. Will the Samsung 2TB Spinpoint MT9 ; 9.5mm x 69.85mm width x 100.35 mm Length fit ?

"" I believe a 9.5mm drive should fit. However, to simplify things, one may simply order a 2TB version of L1.

2TB model of L1 should be available, and is supported by the L1 firmware. For anyone who wants to upgrade from 1TB to something larger, it should be noted that the current L1 1TB model is physically designed to hold a 9.5mm height 2.5" SATA HDD (for now, could change in the future). To fit a 12-15mm height HDD, brass spacers of a different length may be required. """

If I am not missing something here, this is a complete other issue.

The first question addressed connection of an external drive to the L1 USB port and the second question addresses replacement of the physical HDD inside L1.....(?)

Chris, let's talk music for a minute, since you brought them up. The Hold Steady. That band has made some wonderful music and prove that there's still hope for old school hard rock n roll. Just curious how familiar you are with their previous records. Because basically the further you go back, the happier you're likely to be. At least for me anyway.

Also wanted to say that I give you a lot of credit for my current enjoyment of music listening again. Building my hi rez library a little at a time, streaming Qobuz rebook now through my new Aries, and looking for opportunities every day to just sit down and listen and chill. So thanks!

Thanks so much for the kind words. Anything I can do to increase one's enjoyment of this wonderful hobby is well worth it to me.

I have all The Hold Steady albums. I had heard of them for years, but never spent time to listen to their music. A couple guys were recently on my favorite podcast and they played Spinners from the new album Teeth Dreams and I fell in love with the track. I purchased the new album and fell in love with the entire album. Then I went to Amazon and purchased the entire catalog. I love all the albums. There are several references to locations in Minnesota, on all the albums, that I know very well. It's pretty cool. The band reminds me a little bit of Sugar with Bob Mould, but better.

P.S. I went to high school with the drummer Bobby Drake. I don't think I ever talked to him during those four years. We were in different crowds. For all I know the guys on my hockey team probably tried to stuff him in a locker for being "different" than hockey players. I think he has the last laugh now. Great for him.

Yep. Lots of Twin Cities references. Craig Finn would blush for sure for even being mentioned in the same sentence as Bob Mould. He worships Husker Du and all of Bob's work.

I saw them play in Memphis when the Boys And Girls In America album came out at a tiny club with about 40 people there. That was damn cool. The lead singer Craig has mellowed a bit but he's known for his onstage personae. He's like this awesome nerd spazzed out Elvis Costello trying to channel Bruce Springsteen....or something like that. The next time they came back, the club was overflowing, packed to the rafters, everyone shouting all the lyrics.

I still love their first three albums. Some of the spark went out for me after those, or at least comparatively speaking. You can get lost in those three for a while. Enjoy.

    Excerpt from Lumin's Facebook site:

    <Frode Røed:

Another question for the L1, will it be possible in the future to extend the L1 total storage capacity by plugging an external USB disc into the L1 USB port?

    LUMIN Music:

That's not something we can promise at this time.

    Frode Røed:

Huge selling point if you can pull this off, IMO.>

While the Lumin is $1200 and the QNAP is $550, that direct price comparison is not meaningful since you have to add drives to the QNAP. If you add a pair of WD Red 6Tb drives, the prices are almost equal but you are getting 12Tb instead of only 1Tb with the Lumin. Also, I suspect that the QNAP can be set up with a RAID configuration but I wonder what, if any, provisions there are in the Lumin.

Looking forward to hear if the head of Auralic is big-endian or little-endian.

QNAP site says RAID 0 or 1 for this unit. JCR

What are the brand of amps that you mentioned in the 90secs that you will be reviewing?

Great episode, I really do look forward to these. Appreciate the coverage of the QNAP NAS as that is a unit that I have been looking at. (...runs off to Spotify to check out The Hold Steady.......)

The Lumin L1 now ships with 2TB as standard. No price increase.

Excellent - Thanks for this info :)

    PS;

Are you building this comment on the spec sheet on Lumin's website?

In this case I wouldn't pay too much attention, because this info has changed many times and there are also contradictions in the misc. statements made by PixelMagic.

No surprise considering its limited drives.

I'd like to know if both the NAS could work as a server through USB, too. The idea of a silent NAS next to my Cantata might be interesting, but I'd like to have the option of USB.

Hope someone can help me out.

    Best regards

    André

You might be able to connect a USB DAC directly to the QNAP, but the remote control interface would be terrible compared to the normal options. You'd be trying to stick a square peg into a round hole. Sure you can make it work, but it won't be pretty.

thanks for answering so swiftly, Chris. if I connect the qnap to a wireless switch I would be able to use the usual apps on my phone as controller while connecting it to the DAC with USB?

I connect my switch to an wifi Ethernet bridge (802.11ac). You probably won't notice any difference.

I prefer UPnPlay, since BubbleUPnP doesn't find my Cantata. Sometime I use MediaHouse, too. I normally use Minimserver or Foobar2000 as servers, since JRiver unfortunately doesn't let me browse in folder mode.

I use a wifi ethernet switch, too, which works just fine, but I wanted to see if a NAS over ethernet will work better than having the switch linked directly to the ethernet port of my DAC or if the same NAS with USB connected directly to the DAC will perform better than my SBT.

I don't think NAS to DAC over USB will work.

You will not be able to access the uPnP server inside the NAS either.

Aries will (in time) have a possibility to connect to an USB disc over USB, but this imply that the Aries need an uPnP server onboard in order to access and browse your music library residing on the USB disc via your uPnP control point.

thank you, Distinctive. I'm not sure what the Aries is.

it seems that I'll have to check the NAS out with the ethernet directly to my DAC and then compare to the Oppo 103 (coax), SBT (USB) and wireless wifi switch as transports.

    Uups, sorry.

I just visited the CA Aries thread so I mixed up :)

However still, NAS directly to DAC I think will not work. If your NAS w/Minimserver is on the same subnet as your iDevice you will be able to access your music, but the NAS USB port won't stream it to the DAC USB port I am afraid.

in theory, I'm already doing this with my ethernet wireless switch going directly to the DAC. The only difference is that with the QNAP the switch wouldn't be my transport which might, or might not, be better. Maybe I'll get one at Frys and see if it makes a difference. There are quite a few people that say that linking directly is much better than using the switch and this seems like one way to find out. I don't know if my thinking has any logical fault, but it seems correct to me. Would appreciate input.

    Best regards

    Ok.

I am positively surprised that your NAS supports driverless Integer mode in this case.

Just to be sure that we talk about the same thing, are you talking about an Ethernet switch or USB connection/USB hub? Does your DAC have a bridge (e.g. PS Audio PWD/DS)?

    this is my network setup:

    pc>wireless router... wireless ethernet switch>DAC

my DAC is the Resolution Audio Cantata which has an ethernet input and that works as renderer. I'm not sure how the PSD bridge works, but maybe it's similar.
