Confessions of a DigiPhile VII

Genelec GLM fault finding

I wrote this guide spurred by a fellow Genelec owner, thought it might come in handy.

Original thread on the question.

It is important to note that the Genelec 82XX / 72XX series uses two completely independent networks to communicate with the monitors:

- AES/EBU (XLR cable) that carries the music only

- GLM network (USB -> GLM Interface -> RJ45 cable) that controls the monitors: calibration, DSP, volume, X-over freq. etc.

The two functions completely independent, so you can calibrate a setup without functioning AES/EBU feed.

The GLM interface is also an external sound card for the calibrated mike.

PS. make sure to insert the mike @ "AutoCal Microphone"

Genelec GLM fault finding

A) Did you ever get any sound out for the motors except during calibration.

B) Does GLM find your speakers when you start the program - like this?

<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5a4e36_GLM1.png.89287823c83912180b6710f3d3c6dc65.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28221" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5a4e36_GLM1.png.89287823c83912180b6710f3d3c6dc65.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

This confirms connection through GLM

C) AES/EBU signal - Does the LED on the monitors go green?

Green confirms connection through AES/EBU from sound card to monitor

D) Have you chosen the sound card as your sound source?

Check in "Sound and MIDI" - manually choose with two finger click so speaker appears as shown for my Weiss AFI-1

<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5abe08_GLM3.png.1471a01be1847a9a24da3fc260553d47.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28222" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5abe08_GLM3.png.1471a01be1847a9a24da3fc260553d47.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

This confirms connection from Mac to sound card.

E) Saved calibration - does your saved file come up when loading GLM?

<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5b210e_GLM2.png.5a0a320f34801ea6adfe48bd78434c33.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28223" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5b210e_GLM2.png.5a0a320f34801ea6adfe48bd78434c33.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

F) Does GLM show it is connected to both monitors?

They should show up in the GLM main screen:

<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5b9bd1_GLM4.png.50065c7b0a6f905b4611abd25015627a.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28224" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5b9bd1_GLM4.png.50065c7b0a6f905b4611abd25015627a.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

G) Did your calibration get saved in the calibration file?

In GLM Main Page click "GLM System Setup"

Double click any monitor in the loudspeaker list and check

<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5c22db_GLM5.png.3d9b0a5372fb495cea6c01de4918c3d6.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28225" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5c22db_GLM5.png.3d9b0a5372fb495cea6c01de4918c3d6.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Click the "Interactive response editor" button and see a plot of what GLM has done for you:

<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5c9a6a_GLM6.png.f39d4af96eb88d56b12578da9d37a9cc.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28226" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bc5c9a6a_GLM6.png.f39d4af96eb88d56b12578da9d37a9cc.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

I have here ticked "GLM AccuSmooth" and "5 dB / div" to get a good look at what is actually going on ;-)

This confirms that values from calibration was saved in the calibration file.

H) Is Maverick playing games with you?

OSX Maverick introduced App Nap - a really bad thing for Computer audiophiles.

Make sure all of the programs you use for music has the App Nap unselected.

Go to Programs -> two finger click / Show info and click "Do not allow App Nap"

Genelec DSP series:

Monitors: 8240, 8250 & 8260

Subs: 7260, 7270 & 7271

SE: 8130 monitors with SE7261 Sub

Note that the 82XX monitors work with the 72XX but not he SE7261.

They all have DSP build in.

Systems: up to 25 82XX Series loudspeakers and 5 72XX Series subwoofers

SE system only works with a SE7261 Sub, as it has all DSP built in.

Systems: 2.1 - 7.1.

Please add any other tricks or questions in the comments.<p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd6a0b1_GLM1.png.b4d91076cfa00496c5fd92416e03766a.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28471" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd6a0b1_GLM1.png.b4d91076cfa00496c5fd92416e03766a.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p><p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd6fa24_GLM3.png.fc9b41e0b2289bad6f2f9054b45ca69d.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28472" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd6fa24_GLM3.png.fc9b41e0b2289bad6f2f9054b45ca69d.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p><p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd74d2b_GLM2.png.9ba2a46bfe946d226a16e1d6630a8761.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28473" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd74d2b_GLM2.png.9ba2a46bfe946d226a16e1d6630a8761.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p><p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd7b3a9_GLM4.png.8c0caa216ff51a830b86c2a1ec6477a1.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28474" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd7b3a9_GLM4.png.8c0caa216ff51a830b86c2a1ec6477a1.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p><p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd81dcf_GLM5.png.ae08869c59973fc2d4fb86d431743f22.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28475" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd81dcf_GLM5.png.ae08869c59973fc2d4fb86d431743f22.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p><p><a href="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd882ac_GLM6.png.4d6c146ba78621e7f01ed95a0526fee0.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28476" src="/monthly_2013_12/58cd9bcd882ac_GLM6.png.4d6c146ba78621e7f01ed95a0526fee0.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>
