Mahler Symphony No 6 / San Francisco Symphony / SFS Media

Links to listen and purchase: https://bluecoastmusic.com/san-francisco-symphony/mahler-symphony-no-6   Album Title:  Mahler Symphony No. 6 Artist:  San Francisco Symphony Label: SFS Media Provenance: Originally Recorded in DSD 2.8MHz.   From Liner Notes:   Composers before Mahler had been great and expressive communicators, but no one is less guarded than he in his emotions and in the intensity of what he asks us to experience with him. His Sixth Symphony is a work of enormous exploration, of testing musical limits. Here Mahler has pushed his technical abilities as a composer and his perceptual boundaries as a human being. His first audiences were shocked and frightened by this new kind of soul-baring music. He himself was so unnerved by what he had done in his Sixth that he was in tears at the first rehearsals. The Sixth looks unflinchingly at the obsessive, destructive nature of man, the unremitting capacity of humankind to hurt itself. In its final pages, it regards destiny and realizes there will be no mercy. But there is more than despair in these pages. There is utter honesty, humor, tenderness, and, in the third movement, homage to the power of love. Mahler said that a symphony should mirror life. His entire symphonic output is a testament to that belief, and nowhere did he realize this credo so powerfully as in his Sixth Symphony. In listening to the frenzy and sorrow of this music, it is difficult to grasp how someone experiencing these feelings could write them down. Mahler himself doubted that he could compose this and maintain his sanity. But the Sixth is an extraordinary example of his desire to communicate, his need to tell others that they were not alone in experiencing the existential terror that has so sadly become a part of modern life. The need to communicate was, ultimately, what brought him through the process of composition, and what enabled him to write this Herculean piece. It is his faith and commitment to the comforting and transforming power of music that has inspired us in giving this performance and that we hope will be felt by our listeners.

Inside The Taj Mahal / Paul Horn / Inside Music

Links to listen and purchase :https://bluecoastmusic.com/paul-horn/inside-the-taj-mahal   Album Title:  Inside The Taj Mahal Artist:  Paul Horn Label: Inside Music Provenance:   Digitized from 1/4" analog tape masters direct to DSD128. These 1/4" tape were provided by Marlin Horn (son) Note: There are different versions of this recording available for sale. We chose to use the original vinyl as the guide for our downloads because it represents the master. The first note was cut off on the vinyl and matches the master 1/4" tapes. The initial vocal note and the tape operator's voice were on the vinyl but left off of the CD. We chose to leave it on. You will hear noise from the sound of the flute, mosquitoes and the natural noise floor due to the microphone placement. No additional effects or reverb were added to the sound of this recording.   About the recording:  Recorded in 1968, live in the Taj Mahal.  Many people feel this is the album that opened the gate for new age music that followed. It's meditative and relaxing quality transfixed millions of listeners who purchased this album, including the Beatles.  The recording is raw, not polished and amazing when you think of what Paul Horn went through to bring this album to life. No additional reverb was used, only the sound of the tomb itself.  Also interesting are his liner notes that tell a magical story of how this album came to be.   Excerpts from Paul Horn's liner notes, in his words, available to read on the Blue Coast Music album page:   He said to meet him around 8:30 that night. Very few people are there then and I would have an hour to play before closing. They lock up at 9:30.....   I opened my flute case. "what are you doing?" he asked. I said, "I'd like to play my flute in here." "You can't do that." "Why not?" "Because this is a tomb," he replied. "But you sing in here, don't you?" I said. "I sing to God," he answered very emphatically. "Well I play my flute to God," I said, just as emphatically, and to take it out of the case and put it together. I was bluffing and wondering how far I'd get. John Archer was almost all set up, and I sat down right in the middle of the tombs and played one note. I was using alto flute and the low C just flew out and filled the entire room and hung there. I couldn't believe it. It was the most beautiful thing I ever heard in my life. The guard stood there transfixed. I played a few more notes. HE' didn't say anything. I motioned to John, who had his monitoring headsets on, to "roll it."
