List of DACs

  • Manufacturer: Berkeley Audio Design
    Model: Alpha
    Price: $5,000 USD
Inputs: AES/EBU (single wire) 110Ω, Coaxial S/PDIF (BNC) 75Ω, Optical S/PDIF (TosLink), and BADA (RJ-45) Encrypted.
Outputs: Stereo Analog single ended (RCA), and Stereo Analog Balanced (XLR)
Supported Resolutions by input: All inputs support from 32kHz to 192kHz sample rate and from 16-bit to 24-bit world length.
Additional: HDCD decoding detects 16-bit flag at 44.1kHz or 24-bit flag at all sampling rates. One important note: The Berkeley's BADA (RJ-45) Encrypted input is not (currently?) an input for music over ethernet. It is an input for software upgrades to the DAC only. All other inputs support digital music decoding.
  • Manufacturer: Weiss Engineering
    Model: Minerva
    Price: $4,995 USD
Inputs: AES/EBU (single or dual wire), Coaxial S/PDIF (RCA), Optical S/PDIF (TosLink), FireWire (2 FireWire 400 ports).
Outputs: Stereo analog balanced (XLR) and stereo analog single ended (RCA), digital audio output on Firewire, AES/EBU balanced (XLR) and Coaxial S/PDIF (RCA).
Supported Resolutions by input: All inputs support from 44.1kHz to 192kHz sample rate and from 16-bit to 24-bit world length.
Additional: Software works with Windows XP and Vista 32 and 64 bit, Mac OS X Universal binary supports 10.4.11 and up, 10.5.2 and up on Mac Intel and PPC platforms. Volume control via frontpanel switches.
  • Manufacturer: Wavelength Audio
    Model: Cosecant V3
    Price: $3500
    Inputs: USB
    Outputs: RCA
Supported Resolutions by input: up to 24/96
Additional: Silver Upgrade +$6500, Volume Control +$500 also have choice of DAC chip.
  • Manufacturer: Apogee Electronics
    Model: MiniDAC Firewire
    Price: $986
    Inputs: AES/EBU (2x single or 1x dual wire) (DB9), 1x Coaxial S/PDIF (RCA), 1x Optical S/PDIF (TosLink), 1x ADAT, FireWire (1x FireWire 400 port).
Outputs: Stereo Analog Balanced (XLR), Stereo Analog single ended (1/8" jack) and Stereo Headphones (1/4” jack )
Supported Resolutions by input: All inputs support from 44.1kHz to 192kHz (Except up to 48kHz on TosLink optical S/PDIF) sample rate and from 16-bit to 24-bit world length.
Additional: Software works with Windows XP (With drivers), Mac OS X (No drivers needed) from the 10.4.11 and up to 10.6.2 (Mac Intel and PPC platforms). Volume control on the front panel (Selectable internally), variable XLR output (Internal micro potentiometers).
