IMO the advantage downloads offer over a CD is that the download can be a higher res file than the 16/44 redbook CD. Also in some cases the CDs are out of print and available as a 16/44 download...

I had a phono amp (tubes) that would do this from time to time. I fixed it by wrapping the interconnects in tinfoil and connecting via an alligator clip the tinfoil to a ground...

Have you considered the Nova Pre? It is well reviewed, and I really like my Grand Pre which i don't see on their website any longer.

mpd may work, but I am not advanced enough to set it up on either Linux or MacOS. I can get it to use the default output on Linux, but then it is using Pulse Audio and not ALSA.
