  1. Hi, I am now running a 802.11n network by hanging an Airport Express as a base station off the Netgear modem and sending music on this dedicated network. The good news is that the wireless to my kitchen system is excellent and is unaffected by even the microwave oven, which was not the case before. The bad news is that the wireless connection to my main system in the living room, which was never perfect, is intermittent at best and certainly unusable! Would replacing the Airport Express base station with an Airport Extreme lead to any improvements? If not, it looks like I will have to dedicate a laptop to my main system connected by USB. Not the way I want to go. Any thoughts? Thanks, Alex
  2. Craig, Sorry for the poor input on the output(s)! Well, $5.00 is less than £7.99. But very frustrating all the same and warning to others on these forums. Alex
  3. Craig, If you are in the UK, then Maplin has this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=33712 It's only £7.99. What the implications, if any, are for signal quality, I do not know. Hope this helps. Alex
  4. All, I am currently sending analogue from an AE (fed by my G5 iMac) to my Musical Fidelity X-80 and Castle Severn IIs, all controlled by Remote from my iPhone or iPod Touch, in preference to getting out of my chair and hunting around for CDs to play in my MF X-Ray! The sound is different and I am getting more detail for sure. Inspired by various posters (JCBrum, Tim F and Ashley et al) I am minded to try a free experiment! I say free as I have an Edirol UA-1Ex to hand from work and a spare Toslink lead... So far so good I hear you say. However, I prize the wireless facility and do not want to commit a laptop to being a music server. How do I power the UA-1EX? I could temporarily set up a laptop with iTunes and use the USB output to feed the UA-1EX but that would be a lot of bother and would not tell me how the AE + external DAC is performing. Or can I set up the laptop and use the optical input? Can I simply use a USB charger (like the one with an iPhone) to power the UA-1EX? Or will this fry the UA-1EX? Any thoughts? Alex
  5. Gents, I thank you for your replies and I apologise for the delay in doing so. Just to clarify if I may: I should retain the current router downstream of the modem and also add the Airport Extreme downstream of the modem, parallel to the router? the Airport Extreme is not a modem? In this way two networks will be created. The current one will be G by default and will take care of the laptops and the Wii. The new one can be N if I so choose. The task is then to direct the N Airport Expresses and the iPhones/iPod Touch at this new network. Thanks again. Alex
  6. All, Yet another not-very-computer-literate question! I believe Chris has suggested that an all 802.11n 5Ghz network will give fabulous speed and minimal dropouts. However, what are the circumstances in which this happy state of affairs will prevail? My ADSL Modem router is G (Netgear DG834 v3) as is my current wireless access point (Netgear WG602 v3). Does the router dictate the type of wireless network downstream of it? Secondly, it seems that an all N network only happens when all equipment tapping into the wireless network is N compatible. Is this correct? Soo, at any one time my wireless network will have one or two G compatible laptops, one or two N Airport Expresses, one or two Apple Iphones (my house is like an electronic Noah's Ark at times!) an iPod Touch and a Nintendo Wii vying for attention/bandwith. I am now using WPA2 after endless hours trying to configure the first Airport Express through WEP, grrrrr. There seems to me more dropouts to the Wii in the basement. In addition the Airport Express in the living room periodically suffer severe dropouts, the kitchen one is rock solid. I suppose my questions are: in my circumstances will an Airport Extreme deliver worthwhile improvements? should I upgrade the modem? Thanks for any thoughts. Alex
  7. May I be the first to congratulate Tim (tfarney) on his 500th post! Not particularly that one, rather that and the 499 which preceded it! Chris, Tim and Ashley brighten the day and have been a huge help (knowingly or unknowingly) to me and many more in getting into computer sound (I won't say audiophilia, brazenly ripping at 256 kbs VBR as I do... it works for me!) Keep up the good (and play) Alex
  8. Part of the the problem/entertainment value to be had from this thread and indeed others, is the varying grasps of the law of diminishing returns.... It plays an important role in my life and spending patterns for sure. I only offer this as an insight into the mind of a typical punter who might or might not spend money on the various products available to provide recorded sound at home. So, if Ashley or somebody says start with an M-Audio Transit and in effect only spend more if you can detect a difference or more importantly enjoy the different performance level, then that is fine with me! Anybody putting a product before the public would do well to keep said law in mind, especially if they want to break out of their garden shed. Alex
  9. Coops, Please clarify your position. Why is there a link to www.puriteaudio.co.uk and why is there image on your post of a speaker for sale there? Ashley's position is very clearly stated on all his posts. More than one 'salesman nothing more who is trying to sell his product' around here? Personally I welcome contributions from all interested parties, as long as their position is made clear. Finally, I am not sure if Ashley 'has been banned from every UK hi-Fi forum'. But that is coming close to being a badge of honour in my eyes! Over to you. Alex
  10. Hi, Another not-so-smart-but-it-might-help-others-as-well-as-me question: I have ripped half my CDs onto my library under my user account on my iMac. This is easily accessed via Remote on my iPod Touch (my sofa springs are all the worse for it!) but only as long as iTunes is turned on. So far so good. However, my ten-year-old (lots of hyphens in this post!) son does like to exercise his God-given right to log on to the iMac under his name. Result: my iPod Touch cannot find my library. So no music! How can I get his account on the iMac to use the same library as me? Plenty of stiff on Apple Help about multiple libraries but having just the one would suit me best! Many thanks. Alex
  11. Thanks for your suggestions (and best wishes!). I now have iTunes streaming wirelessly to my living room stereo from my iMac G5 via Airport Express! Using Remote on my iPod Touch I can effortlessly flick from track to track from my sofa! Ain't life grand? No drop-out so far except when my son is on Youtube on the iMac... After much googling I solved the problem by removing WEP 128 security and going for WPA2. I tried all the Hex escape routines for WEP but to no avail. I am not saying using WEP security is impossible but it defeated me and a friend who is an IT pro. The documentation that comes with the AE is a joke. Apple should be ashamed. I am using the AE's in-built DAC and on initial listening (remember that I am still grinning from ear to ear as I jump around my music collection, er, without actually moving!) it gives my Musical Fidelity X-Ray V3 a run for its money and it does seem to extract more detail . As Tim and Ashley say, this provides a base line for comparing other DACs. Thanks to all at CA for a definite improvement in my quality of life! Alex
  12. Evening all, Not quite audiophile, but Amazon has just launched, with no fanfare, their download service in the UK. 256kps (compare iTunes) and keen prices. I have not checked the range but am listening to the great Bob Wills from the Tiffany Transcriptions (Vol 1) for £7.99. Very good sound for this vintage and joyous, relaxed musicianship! Enjoy! Alex
  13. Nicholas, I am afraid I cannot help as I have had the same problem. I posted on this matter previously (node 974). Thanks to the kind CA readers/hosts who replied but I have been very busy with other stuff besides I have only now calmed down after experiencing similar problems to you! This may relate to security on your wireless network. Do you use WEP? I do but even adding a '$' before my ten digit password seems not to help! In any case the Airport Express instruction manual is pitifully inadequate IMO. CA forumites, you can help two people with one post here! Regards, Alex
  14. Hi, A basic question but important nonetheless. Can anybody help me get my Airport Express to speak to my existing wireless network? I have tried and tried, googled and googled (it seems I am not alone). I have managed to connect via Ethernet but that is not the point, is it? To add poignancy to this post, I am pretty sure I will be getting an iPod Touch for my birthday tomorrow and my dreams of lounging in my living room and dialling up music form iTunes without stirring are fading! Kind regards, Alex
