  1. Correct in that the Oppo can pull digital media but not have it pushed, and does not show in JRiver. Also correct in that the AVP does not have HDMI, and that is one of the main reasons I think I’ll need to upgrade that pretty soon when I replace the TV. So, right now it sounds like using my ultrabook and dragonfly or other DAC coupled with JRiver would be a good way to go. Given that the Proceed AVP will need to be upgraded in the not too distant future, does that change what I should do today? Do most people still buy processors like the AVP, or are you going to seperate dac's etc.? Thanks, Kevin
  2. All good thoughts. I have a relatively new Asus ultrabook that I can move to the family room, install jriver or similar to access the flac files on the network and get a USB DAC. Then use iPad and jriver app (guessing here) to provide UI. Assuming this makes sense, it brings up two more questions. What DAC and would it exceed the Oppos DAC and overall sound quality of my present configuration? Given that my proceed home theater prosessor is getting long in tooth, should I instead upgrade that to something that also streams audio and video? Thanks again for all your help. Kevin
  3. Wow. Thank you all for such thoughtful input! I'm going to read through this all today and probably come back with some more questions. Again, very much appreciated. Correct on the fact that the PC is in my office and the proceed etc. in the family room, but they are hardwired networked together. Thanks, Kevin
  4. Greetings, I apologize for being so new I don’t even know what I don’t know. I have a Proceed Surround Processor, a Proceed Amp, Revel Speakers, an Oppo 93 and a wired network back to a high-end PC with Flac files . The Oppo 93 allows me via a horrifically clunky interface to play flac files off my PC. I believe the way this works is that the Oppo receives digital input from the PC, and then converts it to analog and sends it to the Proceed. It really sounds pretty darn good, but the interface on the oppo is abysmal at best. Where should I go from here? Improving sound quality would be nice, but most importantly, improve the user interface experience. I'm also looking for a path that does become obsolete in the next few years. Thanks so much for your advice. Sincerely appreciated. Kevin
  5. That Auraliti looks interesting. Sounds like it comes with an internal DAC that could be used or you could upgrade to external. Do i have that right? Would i be able to access files on the network with it too?
  6. All good thoughts. Sounds like the first decesion is do I go the computer / DAC route or the Linn / Naim type device route. My gut feeling is the the device route would be easier and probably more trouble free, but the outboard DAC would be easier to upgrade when new file types are introduced. I also saw a pretty slick Ipad app for the Linn, but there might be similar for the computer too.
  7. Thanks for the continued discussion. You're all helping me get up to speed. It's and exciting new world for me. I'm all windows based now, but have worked with both linux and apple. I think my preference would be to stay windows based, but if the better choice is Mac or Linux, i'm fine with that as well.
  8. I'm pretty open budget wise, particularly if it's upgradable and can be a building block for years to come. Ideally, i'd like to stay under $5,000, but if it takes more to do it right, that's ok too. What i'd like to avoid is investing $5,000 today and have to discard it all in a few years and start over.
  9. Thanks. What DAC would you suggest to rival a high-end CD player? Sounds like in any scenario we're discussing, i really would need to have the computer + DAC residing with the audio system. Do you typically store the files on the same system, or can the be accessed off the network?
  10. Thank you both. Going the Music Fidelity route, you'd hook it up to the PC via USB, and then simply play the files via itunes and it would output to the DAC which would plug into the preamp. I currently have a very high-end CD player. Could i expect the quality to be similar?
  11. My appologies up front. I know high-end audio pretty well, and I know computers pretty well. I'm now trying to marry those to areas. I want to be able to play AIFF files that are on my networked computer on my home AV system (Mark Levinson / Proceed). Just bought an OPPO BDP-93 thinking that would do the trick, but it will only play wav files. What do you suggest? I don't want to spend $4000 for a Linn device at the moment. Thanks for any advice.
