  1. The best sounding room for me was the Hegel room with all Hegel gear feeding a pair of Amphion Argon7 L speakers. The sound was totally transparent. The North American distributor is based here in Montreal and says the Amphions will be here in 6 to 8 weeks. I'm seriously considering replacing my Focals with these if they match well with my Ayre gear. Another great sounding room was the audio Note room. I felt like I was sitting right in the jazz club. Too bad the guy there was a dick though. The Fidelio room didn't do much for me, but I don't listen to classical music, so it was difficult for me to evaluate the sound. I did get to hear some jazz through the Virgos in the Audio Physic room though, but they still didn't do it for me. They also had their $10k linux based music server with an 80gb ssd internal drive. It requires external storage for your library. I heard a lot of good sounding systems, but those are the ones that stood out for me. Best musical selections go to Bitperfect (Joe Walsh) and Filtronique (Dire Straits). I heard better sounding music elsewhere, but those were the only places I got to hear music I was familiar with.
  2. Jesus R I also like Wgscott, especially his sig. Agree with others already mentioned.
  3. Jeff Fritz at Ultra Audio also found that the Sonore sounded better than Audirvana on his Macbook. It's too bad Chris wasn't able to compare the Sonore with the Aurender...
  4. I can confirm the QB-9 needs constant power. I lose the connection to the dac if I lift the power switch on the SOtM card at any time.
  5. I can confirm that sacd_extract compiles and runs on linux. I got some warnings on a Debian 6.0 x86_64 system, but it compiles after removing the -Werror flag. No warnings on my Sonore running Fedora 14 i386. -
  6. Just curious if you brought it to Filtronique... If so, what did the guys there think of the Calyx?
  7. Ted, do you know why sacd_extract is only for windows while sacd-ripper compiles on linux? I sent Mr. Wicked an email to ask why, but I didn't get a response.
  8. I don't have any classical titles, but I did have the same problem when converting Dark Side of the Moon to pcm using Saracon with dither enabled. They played saemlessly without dither.
  9. I'd also like to say that sacd ripping is so easy it can be done blind folded. I know because I'm blind and I do it on a regular basis. I do need someone who can see to start the app, but after that, it is as easy as two clicks of a button. And you can attach an usb drive to the ps3. You just can't do it from the mac. My only complaint is you can't run the scarletbook app from a mac or linux. I play the dff files on my Sonore Signature with the latest beta from Jesus R. It converts to pcm on the fly. I compared the sound to the same files converted with saracon and I can't hear the difference. There is also a fair bit of rock and pop titles available from cdjapan and new titles are being released each month. They're expensive, but I've been happy with the quality.
  10. Most, if not all of the SACDs I ripped would have clipping if I use the 6db gain in Saracon. I leave it at 0 gain and normalize to the value of the loudest track. In all cases, the value was under 6db. Granted I've only ripped and converted about 20 SACDs and they were all rock and pop. That was with no dither. I find dither adds additional gain and also adds gaps.
  11. I found this article interesting. Shunyata claims the two most important factors are to deliver current and reduce noise caused by your own equipment connected to the same circuit. http://www.shunyata.com/Content/ac_overview.html I don't own any of their products, but I've heard good things about them.
  12. Does mpd only have problems with aiff files? My library is flac and mpd plays everything gaplessly, including my ps3 sacd rip of Dark Side of the Moon.
  13. Hi, long time reader, first time poster... I just bought Monster today before checking this site. I was happy with the other R.E.M downloads, so I just went ahead and downloaded it. It doesn't sound like a 5.1 downmix to me. It sounds like the front channels from the 5.1 mix. As others have posted, there are instruments missing altogether. I haven't heard the 5.1 mix, so I can't say for sure, but if I were to imagine what it would sound like, this would come pretty close. Green does sound good to me, but the meta tags are missing a TRACKNUMBER tag, so it really does seem like HDtracks can really use a QA department. I purchased the 24/96 version. I hope this meta tag means it was downsampled from the 24/192 version and not upsampled from the red book version. comment[1]: software=Weiss Engineering Saracon 01.61-31 (libsndfile-1.0.23) OT: ted_b, when Tigerlily came out the local FM station played a version of Carnival with a loud guitar track that kind of reminded me of Mark Knopfler. I was so disappointed when I bought the cd and the guitar track wasn't on Carnival. I've searched for a radio promo, but I've never found one. I wonder if the guitars you speak of is this missing guitar track. I'll have to download it and find out. Btw, I'm pretty sure Running On Empty is also a multi-channel downmix. Many of the tracks are extended and wikipedia says the 25 seconds of audience is missing from the 2 channel disc on the 2005 remaster, but present on the multichannel disc. The date tag on the download says 2005. Personally, I really like this version, so downmixes aren't necessarily bad, but they should indicate it in the description for the download.
