  1. Great revision Thanks for making the site easier to use with IOS
  2. Yes I am taking the long trek from Phoenix AZ to see what wonderful new things are available to abuse my wallet See you there Don J
  3. +2 Build it and they will come!! Another Happy JRiver customer
  4. So I have just decided to purchase this NAS device and was looking for some help before it arrives on what are the best practices for using this device in a home setting.. Main uses for it will be storage of my music collection (approx. 400 GB so far) and being able to access it throughout the home using all the devices that can see the music and play it, storage of the thousands of pictures we have accumulated over the years (some digital , some to be converted to digital) and of course backup for our Windows pcs located throughout the house General plan is to hook it up with gig Ethernet ( any one here have experience with dual Ethernet for failover or link aggregation??) on my centralized router and installing 4 WD RED Nas drives (1 TB capacity each). Other than the basics ..looking for advice for music collection, backup strategies or anything else you have found to be useful Thanks in advance for any and all advice Don J
  5. Chris.. this looks like the NAS that I have been looking to add to my system.. but still confused by all the software offerings that Synology has to offer on these models.... If I am primarily looking for music storage ( and having those files available to all my music devices) and backup of the several PC's we have ..Do the other software packages come with the device or is there a cost for each one ... and if so,, what would you recommend that I get.. Thanks for looking at this for me.. enjoy your site and everyone's thoughts so hoping I can get some clarity to this decision Don J
  6. While I am thinking about this (thoughts never stay a long time with me), does anyone here have suggestions for settings within JRiver (version 18) that may help me with the playback of music using the Modi DAC setup.. Thanks again It just keeps getting better and better..lol
  7. Hello back.. rarely see their name mentioned here.. but have many fond memories from seeing them in the early days and yes I too would like to see the whole Genesis catalog released in any high res format for download..
  8. I have been a lurker for the most part on this site for some time now.. occasionally posting a question or small piece of information while I continued to acquire more knowledge with computer based audio.. Well.. in a burst of well timed Internet purchasing , I have began a new journey with the two pieces noted above (PS.. A large large thank you to the folks at Schiit.. their responsiveness to my order and the incredibly quick delivery process have made me a big longtime fan) and just followed the very simplistic install notes and started up JRiver to hear what was going on in my digital collection After a few panicked moments of not being sure I had actually followed all the steps.. I just hit play within JRiver and lo and behold .. music was commencing to play thru my very inadequate headphones.. but to me a very glorious sound it was Especially since it was one of my very favorites .. Genesis.. (and of course those albums during the Peter Gabriel era) Wow.. Wow.. Wow.. And a big thanks to all on this forum.. you all don't always agree on what is debated and discussed here.. but I am one person who truly appreciates it all.. and it gave this old guy a smile that I just can't stop .. so back to more music now Don J Oh Yeah.. now the next step.. HEADPHONES... this is such a great journey
  9. Thanks for the quick reply Jesus... I had a feeling that what I saw from the first announcement on this site was just irrational thinking on my part that this one product would solve a issue I was having in my Man cave setup.. no easy access to my newly digitized CD collection.. Yes I do have a Touch and that is serving me well in my office setup ( in fact I am listening to it while I type this) but the SOtm Mini Server was my hope for another room.. Ah well.. guess Santa will have to reach deeper to get me two products .. the SOtm Mini and some not yet decided upon USB DAC device.. more research and more questions to come I guess
  10. So.. for those of us (maybe only me) who aren't sure about where this fits into the overall scheme in a digital playback system, can someone point me in the right direction for further research, reviews. etc.. It seems to me that you still need another device to make this work within the analogue world we all live (and hear) in.. I am guessing that some sort of usb dac to analog output device needs to be acquired also to make this work ?? Not sure and also wondering if anyone has purchased this product and what their thoughts are on the performance, ease of us, integration into the playback role, etc is?? Thanks.. PS.. Santa is waiting to see what the final tally is on this (hopeful) purchase..
  11. Just went to website of Simple Design and they are showing a price of $449 and higher price ($849)for battery power supplied model, also lists a long group of features that make this an attractive product to fit into many different environments..mmm.. might have to make a new wish list for Santa..
  12. Dale.. any update to availability of these headphones or should I be looking elsewhere?? Thanks Don J
  13. Hello... read your reviews and it seems like a good set of headphones for the price.. just wondering where they can be purchased from.. have googled several times and all i get is the reviews that you and others have done.. any help would be appreciated.. thanks Don J
  14. Well.. the good news final update.. all the music collection is now residing on another PC.. safe and sound ( and yes I checked a few random songs to be sure it was good..lol) Not sure what to make of the drive .. I got all the information I could off the drives.. but of course with windows.. when you do a new install ( which I plan to do as soon as my nerves reach a normal calm level) the software has to be "installed " as well and not sure if my copying subdirectories off the damaged array will suffice when I go to load them back on.. we will see .. but at least the main drag on my time is now in playable condition .. so all is good.. for now.. Paul.... can't thank you enough for giving me the "courage" to hit that drive like you meant it ..( I used a VPI brick for those that know what they are..it was there and flat and heavy and what the heck.. like Paul said ) Ironically the drive seems stable now but when I tried to put it back into the original PC it began its no workee mode again... so I am just going to be satisfied that I got what I got and call it a day..and besides.. it continues to be accessible using my little USB external dock and the software to put the raid pair back to readable state.. (For those who are interested I found this software called Raid Recovery for Windows that to me was the lifesaver , for after all what good is a spinning set of drives if you can't read them..and I am not adverse to spending some money to make things fixable) Next on my list of what to do better is to also document what I have on this PC so I at least know in the future what software resides on there in the event of a "Mayan" end of the world disaster where my backup also goes bad and I have to rebuild from scratch Till then.. keep on remembering .. Backup.. Backup..Backup.. Don J
