1. Here's the original CNET story:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-57386736-261/struggling-music-service-mog-for-sale/?tag=mncol;1n

And MOG's reply:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/28/us-mog-sale-idUSTRE81R25T20120228

My take: most companies are always for sale. Not their style, but this would be an interesting acquisition for Google -- a way for them to integrate personal collections and a full featured streaming service with discovery, editorial, and purchase options. Nobody does it all right now, somebody should.
 2. harmonica2 -

Did a quick test and I'm not getting the same results. Streaming iTunes radio via AirPlay produces noticeably lower audio quality for me, especially the 64 kbps stations. However, the volume was definitely higher.

Also (re-)tested MOG w/Airplay vs. Spotify w/Airfoil on a few songs, both at 320 kbps. MOG definitely sounds better, especially on the low end.

I have been using remoteless for Spotify, which is really handy. Does anyone have a remote control app for MOG to recommend?

Thanks.
 3. @harmonica2 - Have never used iTunes for streaming internet radio but will give it a shot and see. I'm finding less of a need for AirPlay since the MOG iThing app lets you stream at 320 kbps, where Spotify tops out at 160 kbps for mobile devices.
 4. @harmonica2 - I too tried streaming Spotify to Apple TV with AirFoil and found the fidelity wanting.

If you haven't heard already, MOG introduced a desktop client for Mac yesterday with native AirPlay capabilities. Sounds much better, and is free to boot.

I signed up for a MOG trial after reading this article, and will probably drop my Spotify subscription and switch.

Thanks again Chris!
 5. Hi Chris -

Thanks for the thorough review, and special thanks for focusing on audio quality. You make it clear at the end that you are testing the paid service, but I wanted to point out a few things that might not be obvious to those trying to follow along with the free version:

1. There is no "Preferences" menu in the free version because the options it offers are not available.

2. The free version does not have all of the features available with a paid subscription, e.g., you cannot stream to a mobile device.

3. The paid version defaults to 96 kbps streams on mobile devices, and can be increased to 160 kbps.

4. Both versions default to 160 kbps on the desktop, but the paid version allows you to increase this to 320 kbps.

Because of these limitations, the only way to get 320 kbps to your stereo system is from the desktop using the paid version. If you can't connect your computer directly, you will need AirFoil and AirPort Express (or Apple TV) as you mentioned.

Thanks again!

best,

David D.
