  1. I'm about to jettison my Jadis valve amp in order to replace it with a Devialet 200. Purrrfect for my Genesis panels.
  2. Sub-ed at the local rag. I deal with national and international news/pages. Before that proofreader. Centuries ago, I read English and American litt. Caught the audiophile bug about forty years ago. Caught the computer audiophile virus... two years ago. I live in Nice, France. A few years in England during the Linn LP12/Supex craze. ———————————— Mac G5 (PPC), Jadis pre and amps, Genesis II.5's, Kimber galore and wait... Native Instruments 4DJ soundcard/DAC (€ 195 inc. P&P), couple of external HD's (2 x 1To/Time Machine).
  3. Hello Eloise, I've just bought a S/H G5 (Summer 2006) and I'm a bit worried about the fan noise since the tower is going to be in my dedicated music room (25 sq.m; celing at 3m25). You say: "in a potentially noisy tower MacPro (though there are ways round this)". What's your advice? Thanks, Tube06 ----------------------------- G5 (replaces Jadis JD1 Mk2) possibly with Native Instruments DJ DAC (to replace Jadis JS1 Mk3 DAC!) --- Jadis Pre and Amps --- Genesis II.5's --- Kimber galore
  4. Hello WoodsDweller, You say: 'The important thing, and I can't stress this strongly enough, is RAID is not a backup. You will live or die by your backups. All data kept on a RAID still needs to be backed up to other media.' I'm not sure I get it all. I've always thought that when you used a couple of HD's in RAID1 you actually got a mirror image of disk 1 onto disk 2. Isn't that a 'sort of' backup system? Now — for Mac users — how about using Time Machine? GM http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:RAID_1.svg
  5. Hello Hans, I once was a Wadia owner: Wadia 8 w/X32 then Wadia 2000 upgraded to 27 status always using AT&T I/O w/Audioquest Pro2. Lovely sound w/Jadis and Genesis gear. Avoided using their digital volume control, as the DAC was 'losing bits'. Better sound with a real pre-amp. I've found the 581 manual (if you haven't already got it!): http://www.drhifi.net.au/New%20Equipment/Wadia/Wadia%20581i%20CD%20Player/Wadia%20581se_781i%20CD%20Player%20Manual%20Web.pdf Here are all the upgrades available on the Wadia site: http://wadia.com/products/upgrades/ As for the 'U upgrade': 'Content to come.' A free tip: try re-injecting the signal out of the Wadia back into it. Sounds better! My half €. GM
  6. Thanks for your... careful reply! Of course, the only reason I wanted to go the Mini route was cost. Now, you say: 'A Mac pro or a Sonic Studio Amarra/Model 303 firewire to AES/EBU (...)' I understand that Amarra is SS's soft which improves on iTunes — at a price! Do you think Amarra in a Mini + all the connecting hardware I found inc. a Lynx card 'would do the trick'? I reckon the reason the Lynx card works with a Pro is because it physically plugs inside the machine and thus bypasses the Mac's output limitations and sends a bit-perfect 24/192 signal to an external DAC. Do you know when Amarra is going to be available to the audiophile masses? GM Hey, hi-fi is an American invention (1892)! WW: 'I love the sound of you valved voice.'
  7. Hello Chris, I've been reading this thread with great interest as I intend to take the plunge and go CA. I'm thinking of buying a MacMini and connect it to my Jadis DAC (24/192 upgrade end of 2009). I reckon I can use a Lynx Card. I need: a USB for ExpressCard 34/54 Adapter (19€ virtuavia.eu) and an ExpressCard 34 to PCI Expansion Box (€199 virtuavia.eu or $199.98 cooldrive.stores.yahoo.net). Add a NAS in Raid 1 and a screen and I'm ready. Question: is that setup equivalent to directly connecting a Lynx card to a MacPro? Would it bypass the Mini's 'innards' and would I then get 'full' resolution ie 24/192? If not, nice try but I might as well forget about the complication or save for a MacPro! Thanks, GM
  8. Another interesting link to connect a Lynx card to a Mac (or PC) laptop or a Mac Mini using an expansion box: http://www.virtuavia.eu/shop/index.php?target=products&product_id=29836&sl=FR Features : Compliant with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 standard. Suitable for desktop or laptop equipped with USB slot. Allows USB base ExpressCard module working via USB port. Compatible with Mac and PC laptops. RoHS compliance. GM
  9. Hello Bob & Chris, I've just been searching for the Cooldrives 'Expansion Box' to connect a Lynx card to a laptop. It's the ECS-8582-4S 4-slot ExpressCard-to-PCI Expansion system made by Adlink Technology from Taiwan: http://www.adlinktech.com/PD/web/PD_detail.php?cKind=&pid=755&seq=&id=&sid=# In the US: http://news.thomasnet.com/fullstory/544894 Still not sure whether it would work with a MacBook Pro. 10. Hello Opusover21, 'What I've noticed is that the DAC’s suggested on many a discussion involving computer based systems are not what I would recognise as the well established hi-end manufacturer’s.' Absolutely right! I've owned and listened to quite a few Wadia DAC's and I now own a Jadis JS1 Mk3 DAC (in a Jadis/Genesis system. I intend to go for a computer-based source viz MacPro with Lynx card but I tink I'll stick to my DAC until I can compare it with the likes of Weiss and Berkeley Alpha. Ditto for my Jadis preamp. Last week, I've been comparing (with other fellow loonies) the latest Wadia 521 with (old) Wadia 9 and my DAC in same system using Jadis preamp. Although some thought the 521 might have been more 'precise' with a bit more slam, the Jadis was more involving and more... musical. As for the 521 directly driving Electrocompaniet monoblocks, it was not as good as using a proper old-fashioned preamp. We'd reached the same conclusion years ago with the Wadia 9 driving Jadis or Metaxas amps. And again with a Wadia 27. So it seems that I should stick to good old hi-fi names with a reputation. Which dœsn't mean that I wouldn't gladly try a Weiss or Berkeley when they're available on the old continent. Now, what's happening with the Almarra gear? All the best, GM
  11. Hello Chris,<br /> "Thank you for contacting Berkeley Audio Design. We will reply to your inquiry as soon as possible."<br /> Yeah, I emailed them on Nov. 22nd.<br /> Simple question really: what sort of preamp/volume control have they got?<br /> Of course it would then mean getting rid of my own Jadis preamp & JS1 DAC & buying the Alpha. I would be quids ($/€?) in.<br /> In any case if you're satisfied, it says it all!<br /> Waiting for your article on the Sonic Studio system before I make a move.<br /> Thanks
  12. Hello Chris,<br /> Re my post 22nd Nov. "What sort of preamp is in the Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC? We don't want to lose bits with the volume control like the previous Wadias used to do. To prevent that happening, they've implemented a proper digital preamp + two DAC's in the new Wadia 9.<br /> So, what's in the Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC?<br /> Thanks,<br /> GM"<br /> <br /> In your opinion, what is the SOTA PNO CA system?<br /> Thanks,<br /> GM
  13. Hello Chris,<br /> Now that I've caught the CA bug, I'm thinking about moving from my "old-fashioned" set-up ie CD drive + DAC + Preamp + Amp + LS to CA gear viz MacPro W/Lynx Card + DAC + AM + LS. That's getting rid of both drive & preamp.<br /> I've seen it mentioned in a thread but it dœsn't seem very clear to me. What sort of preamp is in the Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC? We don't want to lose bits with the volume control like the previous Wadias used to do. To prevent that happening, they've implemented a proper digital preamp + two DAC's in the new Wadia 9.<br /> So, what's in the Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC?<br /> Thanks,<br /> GM<br /> <br /> PS: titbit of info: I'll be listening to the Sooloos gear in a shop here on Dec. 6th & 7th with Jadis front end + DAC and amps + Genesis LS. Same week-end, same place, Jadis will be launching their factory-tweaked 25th Anniversary preamp & amp.

  15. Hello Chris,<br /> Yes, I'd rather use a Mac.<br /> The laptop option is cheaper but not an "open" one.<br /> When you add the price of a Magma Box or worse (pricewise) a Weiss whatever you then start thinking MacPro + iPod.<br /> Now, your last remark seems to indicate that maybe you're changing your mind about PC's (?).<br /> Is that a hint at your soon-to-be-revealed new reference system?;-)<br /> And what about the Almarra etc. option?<br /> Questions, questions!<br /> Thanks,<br /> GM
