  1. I've been using Synology's DSM 4.0 for a while now and it is definitely ready for prime time. I really want to hear those new Dynaudio Xeos ...
  2. I recently sold my Bel Canto 1.5 and upgraded to the 3.5 ... love them both. Interestingly, I did experiment with several headphones before I sold my 1.5 and ended up choosing the Sennheiser HD800 Over-Ear Circum-Aural Dynamic Premiere Headphone. I also tried some very interesting Audez'e LCD-2 magneplanar headphones, but ended up sending them back. However, ultimately I ended up selling the Sennheisers as well as I just feel that something is missing when not listening to my music through a set of speakers. You definitely can get a little bit more detail out of a great set of headphones, but speakers just sound WAY better to me ;-)
  3. I have had three drobos now and hated each one of them ... noisy, unpredictable, SLOWer than molasses, and just all around pieces of crap. Read the reviews from other buyers ... Reviews Very few owners actually like them ... in my humble opinion, the only positive about them was that you can use different sized drives in them. However, now you can do that with almost any of the new raid arrays. I switched to a Synology DiskStation DS212J NAS and absolutely LOVE it. Quiet, FAST, reliable, and cheap. Also, the GUI browser interface is great ...
  4. I'm with Audioseduction on the USB recommendation (although I would go with a Bel Canto or Wavelength USB DAC if you want true audiophile sound). However, for the hard drive, definitely go with a WD Green 2TB or 3TB ... they are soooo silent and also generate much less heat which makes your fan not whirrrr as much ;-)
  5. That is definitely no Mac Mini killer. The mini is sooo silent and produces GREAT sound if you set it up correctly ... that is why so many audiophiles use them. Pick one up and match it to a Benchmark Dac/Preamp and you'll be stoked ;-) Plus, if you buy it on Amazon you can always return it if you don't like it! ;-)
  6. Check out the Benchmark Dac/Preamp. I had one before I switched to my Bel Canto and really liked it ... great sounding with no frills. They also make a cheaper preamp without the DAC that may just be what you are looking for ... Link-O-Matic
  7. I just picked up the AudioQuest Forest USB ... only about $30 and definitely well made. Good reviews too ;-)
  8. After all of the SSD talk, I did some research and went out this weekend and picked up two Kingston HyperX 120GB SSDs and put them in Raid0 ... WOW are they freakin' fast. And, more importantly since they are in my music server, they put off almost no heat which means that the fan doesn't come on ... sweet, sweet silence. And, did I mention how smokin' FAST they are? ;-)
  9. I recently picked up the new Mac Mini Server i7 quad core with dual 500GB drives and love it. Put the drives in raid0 and the machine is zippy. However, I will likely swap the drives out for dual SSDs when the price drops a little more to make it even faster and to reduce the heat. I find that the fan comes on more than my last generation dual core Mini so I use SMCFanControl to reduce the noise.
  10. Actually, Raid0 is much faster but only 1/2 as reliable as a single drive because there is twice the likelihood of failure (2 drives). Still, check out that Synology NAS I was talking about above ... super nice ;-)
  11. Forget the OWC Raid ... I had two and they both died. Then I got the Synology Network Attached Storage DS211J and have to say it is the most amazing NAS or Raid array I have ever used. Click on the link and read the reviews. I wrote a review of it on a NAS website somewhere and will try to find it and post a copy ... super fast, super quiet, and cool GUI interface.
  12. SSD = Solid State Disk ... they don't spin like regular hard drives which makes them run much cooler. Also, they are WAY faster ;-)
  13. I am thinking of picking up one of these limited edition MC275 tube amps to go between my Bel Canto DAC and my Dynaudio Speakers ... has anyone heard it yet? I love the way glowing tubes look at night. Also, I find that they tend to take a bit of the edge off that I get from having an entirely digital system ... Wavelength DACs seem to do that well too.
  14. Let me know how the DAC to tube set up works as I am think about changing from a solid state amp to a tube amp to take a little of the digital edge off.
