  1. There is available a multi-CD compilation covering all of Jack Bruce's career: I first heard him live when he and Ginger Baker were playing in the Graham Bond Organisation at the local cinema in Lincoln in the UK... the curtains were closed and then there was the sound of Jack Bruce playing lead guitar on his bass, followed by Ginger Baker and then the curtains opened....!
  2. Others: - so many recordings from the John Peel show on the BBC - "Fiddler and the Drum" by June Tabor, the CD from PJ Harvey are two that come to mind - Hendrix "Live at Winterland" - better, to my mind, than the one from Monterey - Captain Beefheart "Live in Liverpool" - not a great recording but I was at his concert at Loughborough during this tour, the only time I saw the Good Captain live: fantastic - there are also DVD's from "The Old Grey Whistle Test" from the BBC which are worthwhile looking at,,,,
  3. I like Peter Schreier's live recording of Schubert's "Winterreise" - you can hear the coughing - discreet, I hasten to say - of the audience from time to time...
  4. I use the following as test tracks: - for voices, resolution: The Tallis Scholars - "Spem in Allium" - for bass: Kode 9 and the Space Ape "Memories of the Future" Track 3 - for voice, ultra bass: Massive Attack, Japanese mix compilation Disc 4 "Hymn of the Big Wheel" Track 3 - for piano: Glenn Gould; Bach "Goldberg Variations" - for cello: Janos Harker; Bach concertos - for male voice: Peter Schreier the live recording of "Winterreise" - for enjoyment: Mahler No 1 from Leonard Bernstein - for jazz: Miles Davis "Seven Steps to Heaven" Track 1
  5. I'm afraid that I'm an electrostatic freak: every other drivers seem to me to be "coloured" in some way although I'm not naïve enough to say that electrostatics themselves must have "colour" to other listeners...! For speakers I have 2 pairs of Quad ESL 63's, one with an old subwoofer and one with a Gradient but my favourite is the 2905: alone it can generate enough bass for me - I would recommend Kode 9 and the Space Ape "Memories of the Future", Track 3 - as a test track... As for "earphones" then I have a pair of Stax 009's - absolutely fantastic: sooooo accurate! I have been driving with an SR 600 Limited Edition valve earphone amp but I do travel between a variety of countries and so I've checking them out with the much cheaper solid state SR-252S at HiFi lounge in Biggleswade in the UK and found that, to my ears, the of the two were similar enough that I've been happy enough to buy the 252s's as well... If you're interested in listening to all of the high performance headphones around - Sennheiser, McIntosh, Stax, Oppo, Beyer, Audeze and so on I can thoroughly recommend a visit to HiFi Lounge as they are all available, together with their respective amplifiers...
  6. Many thanks to you both for your comments. I'm afraid that I must sell my house - foreseen end August / beginning September - before I can buy but I'll post my final system as soon as I have bought it.
  7. I am planning on creating a digital system around a Mach2Music Mac mini with SSD storage. I would like to pass through a high level DAC, ideally without passing through a pre-amp, directly into a power amplifier for my Quad 2905 speakers. Has anybody compared the DAC's from: - Weiss DAC 202 Firewire - Nagra DAC - MSB Platinum DAC + Power Base or other, even higher level, MSB systems? Any comments on a valve-based power amplifier for this system? You can see why I'm intending to be "poor but happy"!
