  1. The Airport is the latest version. What options do I have to deal with the jitter? The RMB-1066 is just an amp. I think you may have thought it was a receiver. It's a 6-channel amp, however I'm only using four channels bridged to stereo. It's a bit overkill for my application I admit.
  2. Hi everyone. Getting back into 2-channel audio after a long break. Original setup: Windows XP, a Juli@ sound card to a Musiland MD10 DAC via coax (I think) to a set of Rotel separates to a pair of Paradigm Studio 60 V.4s. Much of the system was also used for surround sound/movie watching. Current setup: Windows 7 64 server sending mostly lossless CD rips to an Airport Express (wired) to the Musiland MD10 via optical then directly to a Rotel RMB-1066 and finally to a pair of Paradigm Studio 10 V.5s. Analog cables are a pair of DIY cables I built years ago. Decent quality. I use iTunes and control it with the Remote app. It sounds great, but I was hoping for a bit more. My memory is telling me the previous setup sounded better. Obviously the 60 series Paradigms had more low end, however I was expecting the highs to be at least as good. I should probably just do an A/B comparison. Here are my actual questions: Is the Musiland DAC a weak link? There seems to be newer/higher quality DACs out there for a few bucks more. Also wondering if not using a preamp is a problem. The Musiland has volume control. Last question is regarding placement of equipment. Everything is fairly close together. I once read someone heard a noticeable improvement by moving their Airport much further away from the other gear. I'd really appreciate your much more experienced opinions.
  3. I managed to get Winamp to play the 24/96 files, but nothing sounded as good as a 16/44.1 file played with ASIO4ALL and USB. One method was with DirectSound and USB, but somewhere along the way it was down sampled to 48 kHz. Another method was with ASIO4ALL through SPDIF. But the Audigy sound card would send it at a fixed 44.1, 48, or 96 kHz. There was no discernible sound difference. Also ASIO4ALL was real flaky and seemed to introduce popping and skipping if you played with the settings. I would have to restart Winamp to make it go away. I'm now convinced the Musiland DAC does not support 24/96 through USB and unfortunately I don't have a good sound card to send it SPDIF. I'm ready to throw in the towel here and stick with 16/44.1. Anyone know how to down sample a 24/96 WAV to 16/44.1?
  4. I also found this site yesterday. So far the people are informed and much friendlier than other sites. I have a similar setup to rogerOlofsson: "It's not great but since this MediaCenter also handles TV, photos, weather, movies etc my family loves the system." Don't think that you need to make compromises because you have a HTPC. My setup is similar. I use Meedio, it's an alternative front end to MediaCenter. Basically all the TV, DVD, and Blu-Ray multichannel audio is connected via SPDIF. I use an external DAC connected using USB for 2-channel audio. Meedio changes the output from the default sound card to the USB DAC and also changes the input on my preamp. It's worked perfect for almost two years now. If you are interested in audio resolutions above 16/44.1 I would listen to what other experts have to say. It's not so straight forward!
  5. Yeah, I think you're right. So what are other ways of sending a clean digital signal to my DAC using Winamp?
  6. Wow. This website is great! Just what I've been looking for. I've enjoying the sound of my Musiland MD-10 for several years now. Recently was I able to rip DVD-A (finally) and have 24/96 WAV files that sound horrible through my DAC. The songs are really slow and distorted. I use Winamp with ASIO4ALL (I'd like to stick with Winamp because my front end uses it). The Musiland is connect via USB. First, I can't figure out from the seemingly hundreds of forums out there if ASIO4ALL supports 24/96. If not, I could connect the DAC using my older Audigy SPDIF, but I'm worried that the lower quality sound card will not send unmolested data. Also I currently connect the digital output directly to my Preamp for movie watching. I would have to split the signal or something. I'm not interested in buying any new equipment. The sound is great as is. I would really like to add DVD-Audio to my library and perhaps download some other higher rez audio. Thanks.
