  1. I just don't see Apple doing enough to replace something like Roon. I am new to Roon but love that it integrates into my Sonos system for the whole house audio, and my Hi-Fi products supporting both my local files and Tidal in a fairly nice to use app.
  2. I actually think Roon will still hold a specific corner in the market. Given how Apple historically doesn't like to play well with things that are not purchased from their library, I see them more as an alternate service to Tidal as a content provider vs. a consolidated platform. Sonos seems closer to the platform concept with the ability to bring all your sources and media together but too tied to their own speakers. Roon provides a hardware agnostic (I understand the certification for compatibility) platform that allows you to consolidate multiple services and sources in high resolution. Also it is pretty plug & play with a nice UI and mobile app.
  3. I would like to offer a different perspective. I work for a large multinational software company and my job is managing customer accounts post sales which includes defect resolution, feature requests, release readiness and rollout, as well as organizing user group events, customer innovation days, and many other ongoing customer adoption interactions. One of my biggest challenges is working with customer and developers to prioritize what actually makes it into the product from both a fix and feature perspective. We can host the same customer feedback event in different areas across the globe, and what they want in the U.S. is completely different than Germany, and then completely different from Japan. This does not even get into within the U.S. what different industries like consumer goods, retails, oil & gas and high tech all want. It is impossible to develop software that can be everything to everyone, especially with a mass product like Roon that is not completely custom to the user. This is why I quoted @bobflood because I suspect he is right and they are happy targeting that 90%.
  4. I am slowly getting back into the audio game after many years away. One of my requirements was simplicity. I am sure that I am giving up sound quality for this, but where I am at, I will take that tradeoff. I was hesitant about setting up system based on Roon due to the ongoing costs, but so far, I am happy with it. I like having all of my sources (local & streaming) in one spot and the Roon app seems to be doing a good job also controlling my equipment. I am still in my trial period but so far I like it.
  5. @cjf Type O Negative is a solid choice. Their cover Cinnamon Girl is one of my top cover songs.
  6. I tried the Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt and ended up returning for two reasons. The first one I received was defective and only produced sound from one channel. I purchased from Crutchfield and they help me confirm it was an AQ issue and nothing on my side. I know quality issues can happen, but this put me off right away. When I finally got a working unit I found the AQ Cobalt doesn't justify the $299 price tag. It is a good sounding DAC, but with so many portable options these days, you can find other DACs that sound as good for cheaper. In my case I actually went with a portable DAC & Headphone amp that to me was better given how the little extra power from the Amp opens the headphones up and the DAC quality was similar and I saved some money.
  7. I had a pair of Harbeth's once (C7 line I think) and paired them with a Naim Nait XS and a REL sub. To date, that was still the best sounding system I ever put together and miss it. But with the power of the Nait XS in my room size was enough.
  8. Agree their last was not their best. Their album covers are pretty sweet as well.
  9. Adios is by far my favorite Rammstein song.
  10. Here are some suggestions that I think might be ok for non extremists: Metallica: ….and just for all – Lars double bass! Gojira: Magma – Blast beats for days. Nine Inch Nails: With Teeth – Trent, do I need to say more? Devin Townsend Project: Epicloud – Devin has great vocal range and Anneke van Giersbergen adds beauty to it Ghost: Meliora – It’s like Black Sabbath meets ABBA Volbeat: Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies – Western Metal from Copenhagen
  11. One more vote for the Meze 99 Classics. I bought them and the Sennheiser HD6xx from Drop and much prefer the 99's over the 6xx. The 6xx seemed to analytical to me and I appreciate the nod to extra bass of the 99's. I have ordered new ear pads to see if I can get the 99's a little closer to neutral, but have not tried them yet. I power the 99's off an iFi Audio DAC / CAN setup and the iFi Audio Hip Dac. They don't need a lot of power but in my opinion get better presence and weight with a little bit of juice. I too listen to a lot of metal music and very happy with them.
  12. For sale is my Beyerdynamic T1 headphones. They have been upgraded by Moon Audio with thier 10' Black Dragon V2 Headphone Cable with a Neutrik Single 4 pin Male Gold Plated XLR. The headphones are in very good condition. I am the original owner and purchased from Moon Audio. The cable upgrade is over a $200 value. I am asking $750 which includes the original case and shipping to the lower 48 fully insured. Overview: The completely redesigned transducers achieve values of over one Tesla (a unit of measurement for magnetic flux density). That provides the listener with almost double as much volume as traditional headphones. The increased efficiency also leaves the T 1 with greater power reserves for dynamic, undistorted sound and nearly lossless conversion of electric signals into sound waves. The extremely lightweight 600 Ohm voice coil provides transparency and perfect impulse fidelity. The elegant look of the T 1 compliments the technical achievements, with even the smallest of details selected by hand. This model reaffirms beyerdynamic's commitment to world-class "Made in Germany" quality. Specs: Transmission type - Wired Headphone design (operating principle) - Semi-open Headphone impedance - 600 ohms Headphone frequency response - 5 - 50,000 Hz Nominal sound pressure level - 102 dB Construction - Circumaural (around the ear) Cable & plug – Upgraded Moon Audio *** The stand in the pictures is not included in the sale.
  13. For sale is the exceptional Oppo HA-1 Headphone Amplifier in very good condition. I am the original owner and purchased directly from Oppo last August. I am asking $900 which includes all the original accessories and shipping in the original box to the lower 48 fully insured. This is what Oppo has to say about the HA-1: The analog audio section of the HA-1 is a fully balanced design with an emphasis on keeping the audio signal in the analog domain once it leaves the DAC. The HA-1 is anchored by a hefty toroidal power transformer, and linear power regulators and filters with custom made capacitors ensure that the headphone amplifier has a clean power source with plenty of reserve energy. The fully balanced Class A power amplification section uses hand-picked and paired discrete components to ensure symmetry, and a motor-driven precision volume control knob allows for both manual and remote control volume adjustment while keeping the audio in a pure analog audio path. Features: - Class A Headphone Amp and Pre-Amp - ESS 9018 Sabre32 Reference DAC - Toroidal Power Supply - High Definition Audio Support - Mobile Device Support - Display Driven Interface
