  2. I hope to see developments which are not just incremental enhancements but true, "revolutionary" changes to old habits, like: - Speaker technology with controlled directivity (DSP based, see the Kii speakers for a first glimpse). - Active control of room acoustics (see below). - Binaural playback via speakers (crosstalk canceling). - Out of head localization for headphone playback. - For the file based or streaming based playback: Tons of good metadata including the CD booklet we are used to. - A decent compensation scheme for the musicians on streaming platforms. (This injects money into the struggling music industry again, which in turn results in (technically) better recordings I assume). In another post in this thread the AVAA system for bass mode control was mentioned. This is a product of the PSI Audio company (I do not have any relation with that company). We recently had an AES (Audio Engineering Society) meeting at PSI Audio where that system was presented. I heard it in three different rooms so far and I must say that it works extremely well. This solves the bass mode problem without any acoustic treatments. There is a paper on the principles here: http://infoscience.epfl.ch/record/203676/files/2014%20Karkar%20Rivet%20Lissek%20Strobino%20Pittet%20Adam%20Roux%20-%20Electroacoustic%20absorbers%20for%20the%20low-frequency%20modal%20equalization%20of%20a%20room%20What%20is%20the%20optimal%20target%20impedance%20for%20maximum%20modal%20damping%20depending%20on%20the%20total%20area%20of%20a.pdf Daniel
  3. Of course you can use any suitable NAS (or DAS) to go with the MAN301. The criteria to choose a NAS are: - At least RAID 1 configuration (do not use one with a single hard-disk, even if it is SSD), preferably RAID 5 or RAID 6 for higher capacities - Have a Gigabit Ethernet connection (not just 100 Mbit) - Use a fanless unit if the NAS should stay in the living room - or at least check for a very quiet one The Integrita uses a RAID 6 configuration (2 hard disks can fail at the same time w/o loosing any data), i.e. it has 5 hard disks, 2 of them for redundancy, so the largest configuration (3TB HDs) offers 9TB of useable space. Plus the Integrita has a nice look, medical class power supply, is very fast, server grade HDs. Daniel
  4. - The MAN301 supports streaming of radio stations. Spotify etc. we are working on. - Downloads: not yet. This is also an item on our list. Usually you have a computer anyway for those tasks, so this is not a top priority thing. We want to havet he playback side as complete as possible, including e.g. EQ / room EQ and more. - Medea+ vs. the MAN301's internal DAC, which happens to be of DAC202 quality: Both DACs are very high up in terms of quality, the differences become smaller and smaller there. "Normal Ears" probably would be hard pressed to hear a difference, but that all mainly depends on the rest of the system. Headphones can be very revealing. You would have to decide for yourself - obviously. Daniel P.S. The MAN301 now also plays DSD64 and DSD128 files in DSF and DFF format. Plus allows to edit the meta data of those files.
  5. Yes, right. Which has the advantage that there isn't a nasty analog filter required (as with a native DSD conversion) to get rid of the huge noise pile above 20kHz. Daniel
  6. Yes, the non DAC version has all I/Os, except the analog outputs. The AES/EBU and S/PDIF outputs are 192/24. The 24 bit is the limitation of the AES/EBU format. Dual wire is also possible for DACs which can handle 176.4 or 192 in dual wire only. We just released version 1.1.0 of the MAN301 software with Gracenote database support and other nice features. Now working on DSD file playback. Daniel
  7. The hidden files thing seems to happen with certain NAS units only. It is fixed in the latest MAN301 software which will be released coming week. Also the gap issue. The new MAN301 software supports the Gracenote database with its top quality artwork and metadata and its huge number of CD entries. The searching function and the library displays for large collections are now a lot faster. BTW, we are exhibiting at the upcoming NY show. Daniel
  8. Pedro, the NAS units mentioned in the article are certainly fine. Just recently a "High-End HiFi" NAS became available as well: Integrita | Audio Technology for tomorrow made by the German company Certon It is not about sonics, but the Integrita has some nice features audiophiles love: - No fans, i.e. extremely silent - RAID6 array with 5 disks (2 disks may fail simultaneously w/o loss of data) - Medical type power supply - server type 24/7 disks - useable capacity 6TB with the largest model (With 3TB or 4TB harddisks this should be 1.5 or 2 times higher I guess) - fast - nice looks - no need to setup / configure anything when used with the MAN301 (We sell the Integrita in Switzerland, for other countries contact Certon.) Daniel
  9. Hello Pedro That does not matter. It is all the same (Ethernet, USB, Firewire). The data is fetched in packets so it does not have any influence on audio clocking etc. As for the NAS or DAS (Direct Attached Storage like e.g. a USB disk) I suggest to go with at least a RAID1 scheme (mirrored harddisk) or with a RAID5 if you need more capacity (more than 2 harddisks). Do not use a single disk NAS or DAS. Daniel
  10. Hello Pedro I recommend to connect both the NAS and the MAN301 to your network via Ethernet. That way you have access to the NAS from everywhere. The 100MB/s is no issue as Chris also mentions. Plenty of bandwidth. If you connect the NAS directly to the MAN301 then you may access it via WiFi via the access point of the MAN301. In such a "standalone" configuration the uplink of the MAN301 is usually enabled in order to get access to the Internet. The uplink connects to your main WiFi network. It then is not possible to access the NAS via the main network though, i.e. one has to connect to the MAN301 access point to access the NAS. So in short, it is simpler to have MAN301 and NAS connected via Ethernet to your network. Daniel
