  1. Not strictly on the thread but related. There is lots of discussion about usb output of hires signals and all its attendant problems but what about the Lightning output? Specifically using a lightning to usb cable. I presume this would be full resolution and powered. However I can't find any discussion about it. Regards
  2. well finally got an expert to listen - my wife! - totally disinterested in hi-fi but a singer. Got her to blindly judge 24 and 32 bit rips against 16. She repeatedly preferred th 16 bit original. Up bitting seemed to add something like reverb that may be initially appealing but ultimately annoying.
  3. Another question on XLD. As part of the new SoX implementation it is possible to rip to 24 or 32 Bit but maintain 44.1 sampling rate. Would anyone expect play-back ( without up-sampling ) to be improved? Up-sampling could be done later with Pure Music, Audirvana + etc. if required. So my general question is should I be ripping my 16 bit CD's to 24 or 32 bits even if I don't want to up-sample?
  4. thanks, these are obviously new products - in the same way as the XMOS board!
  5. I think you will find that it is a quite short list Both those you mention are 24/96 decoders
  6. Specifically? I haven't tried Weiss Firewire but I am not specifically aware of how to get 24/ 192 out of a Mac with System 10.7 now that Soundflower isn't supported. The DACmini will decode the resolution but how do you get it there?
  7. It is a circuit board only for experimentation specifically for 24/192 output from a Mac http://www.xmos.com/products/development-kits/usbaudio2
  8. No, if you look at the XMOS board it is usb in (from the computer) and optical out - to the DAC
  9. I recently thought that I had solved this problem - but unfortunately not yet. I have just received an XS1-L1 USB Audio 2.0 Board made by XMOS with I believe software by CEntrance that promises 24/192 output from a Mac. I connected it by USB to my latest product MAC Mini and sure enough System Preferences indicated that output up to 192 was available!! The board was connected by Optical to my CEntrance DACmini (an excellent product!!) and I settled down to listen to full HiRez sound. Unfortunately not perfectly. Every 3 to 5 seconds there was a slight "hiccup" as if something was overloaded which quickly became quite irritating. This occurred on both native and up sampled 24/192 music. It occurred on Perfect Music, Audirvana Plus and Audio Gate. Interestingly NO sound at all has ever come out at 176.4 wether native or up sampled. Sound otherwise was quite satisfactory at 24/96 resolution or lower but that is not it's main design brief. Subsequently the board has stopped working all together. The product seems not there yet and not specifically supported by XMOS who describe it as a technology evaluation product.
