  1. I have everything up and running. I just received back my Bricasti M1 which was updated with an ethernet card. I have the DAC on the network with the NAS. Bypassing USB is quite a revelation. Still exploring a plan for back up. I'll report back when I have it sorted.
  2. End of the story: I purchased the DS1817+ and installed the hard drives. Synology tech support were very patient and helpful. All files were recovered quickly and without any issues. I'm back in business. I'm going to look into offsite backup. in the meantime I'm having my Bricasti M1 updated with the new ethernet card.
  3. I plan on ordering either an 1815+ or 1817+ next week. I numbered each drive so I don't expect any issues once I install them in the same sequence. I appreciate everyone's feedback.
  4. I can't give you an intelligent answer. I don't know how it was set up or what the RAID configuration was. I do know I was using the Synology OS but I don't know what version. The dead server has already been scrapped as Synology support said the motherboard can not be repaired. I'll most likely buy a DS1817+ that was released last week. Synology is confident it will read my HDs with no difficulty. I'll explore an offsite back up situation. This is getting expensive...
  5. Thanks for the feedback. I spoke with Synology a few minutes ago. I have two options (well three really): 1. Buy a new Synology NAS. 2. Hook up my 6 2TB drives to a Linux computer, follow their instructions and extract the files. The third option is to switch over to a different company like QNAP and cut my losses. I think having an offsite back up is a superb suggestion and probably something I should explore regardless of which direction I go. Is there a offsite back up you recommend? Lots of companies out there.
  6. I don’t know if anyone here can help me. I am not computer savvy on any level beyond my Mac. I don't know/understand Linux, write code, etc. I have a Synology DS1812+ NAS with 6 2TB drives installed. I keep my music files on there (nothing else). I have it on a network feeding a Mac Mini which is connected to a Bricasti M1.The NAS died and Synology technical support has been less than helpful. They suggested I try replacing the power supply and if that doesn’t help I’m out of luck because you can’t replace the head unit itself.I finally got a replacement PSU from Synology and just installed it. The unit is still dead - no power. I’m assuming it is the head unit. Here is the issue:Based on my conversation with Synology I can’t simply remove the drives and pop them into another unit - Synology or another brand - and access the files. I asked if I bought an external case for the drives would I be able to access the files. Synology says no because of the way the hard drives are formatted. I asked if I bought a second hand DS1812+ would the drives work. They said it was possible but difficult because it might not have the same OS installed. If I were to buy a new Synology unit I was told its not a simple solution either.Luckily I have some of the music backed up on my computer but not everything. I can’t repair this unit. My concern is accessing all of the music, and reinstalling it on another NAS (preferably not Synology). Any suggestions? Ken Golden
  7. The Bricasti M1 is about to be upgraded to accept native DSD. You should add it to your list.
  8. I'm an early adoptee of the M1 and its great to see it finally getting the attention it deserves. I hope Chris gets a chance to review it. Here are my experiences with the filter settings. I migrated to the minimum phase filters immediately. Now whenever I encounter a DAC with linear phase filtering all I can focus on is the smeared sound. There is no right or wrong filter setting. The best one is the one that sounds right to you. There are lots of variables. You might find that you use a different filter for Redbook playback and a less "severe" one for hi-res. it is also very much system dependent. For the past year I had settled quite happily on MP2. With the change over to the linear power supply and insertion of Hi-Fi Tuning Supreme fuses, I switched to MP0 for the past two weeks. However I then demoed new speaker cables. I inserted Transparent Audio Reference into the system. MP0 now exhibited too much top end for my taste. I went back to MP2 and everything fell into place. Curiously, I have now moved up the line and installed their Reference XL speaker cable. Now I find that on some material I can move back to MP0. The cable is still breaking in. Its possible I may wind up at MP0 permanently. I am in the process of upgrading my M1 to USB capable. I plan on switching from the Bryston BDP-1 to a Mac Mini scheme next week. I have no experience with USB cables so I can't provide an opinion. I'm looking forward to the impending DSD update. My MSB Technologies UMT will export native DSD over SPDIF. Ken Folden
  9. I installed 4 Hi-Fi Tuning Supreme fuses. Bought them from Cable Co but I think they are available elsewhere. Talk to Brian about the psu upgrade. Before I changed I was on MP2, and switched to MP0 afterwards. Fuses made a big difference but nothing like the change from the new psu. Really dramatic. Ken Golden
  10. David: I've been using the M1 longer than most. Once Bricasti added the minimum phase filters I settled on MP2. Here is the twist... Two weeks ago Bricasti introduced a linear power supply that made a radical change in the sound of the M1. With the changeover, MP2 was still quite good but I actually switched over to MP0. At the suggestion of Brian Zolner I switched out the fuses. I installed Hi-Fi Tuning ceramic fuses. I was quite surprised by the noticeable improvement it made. You should know that there is also an impending hardware update to the M1 which will allow it to accept native DSD and higher PCM sampling rates. In my opinion Bricasti is pushing the state of the art in digital playback. Ken Golden
  11. Just to be complete - here is a screen shot of Dark Side Of The Moon: [/img]
  12. Chris: Is it possible that its drive dependent? I didn't encounter this with any discs I ripped. Ken
  13. As noted I've been able to successfully rip Blu-ray audio with the current version of DVDAE without the use of MKV. DVDAE is indicating 2 channel 96khz for Within Temptation "Black Symphony" and Pink Floyd "WYWH", and 2 channel 48khz for David Gilmour "Remember The Night" and Pat Metheny "The Way Up Live". It seems as far as DVDAE goes its business as usual. I'm using an LG Blu-ray drive that I picked up from Other World Computing.
  14. Souptin: I was also able to rip directly from Bluray using the Mac version of DVDAE. I also ripped WYWH from the Immersion set, as well as the audio from Bluray discs by David Gilmour, Pat Metheny, and Within Temptation. No intermediate steps necessary. It worked exactly the same as if I had inserted a DVD. Ken Golden
