  1. Thanks for the response. This is what logic told me, just want to hear someone else come up with the same conclusion. Any idea how to set up a zone 2 given my system constraints (ie without having to buy another $1-2K piece of equipment? Randy
  2. Ok, sorry for this post not being completely computer audio related; however,I am trying to set up a music server and have run into something that is out of my learning. I have a Yamaha RX-A2000 as my receiver / pre-amp. I drive my front speakers (B&W 804) with a reference series B&K dual mono amp wired off the front pre-out of the Yamaha. As well, I have another B&K amp that drives two sets of speakers in a zone 2 (split using a Niles impedance matching switch) and wired off the Zone 2 pre-out of the Yamaha. I have recently bought a Peachtree IDac. It is the first step in setting up my music server. Next will be the Mach 2 modified Mac Mini. I thought it best to go into this step by step. I get a really good sound through the Yamaha when on Pure Direct. There is another mode called straight that is "unprocessed" (supposedly) but does not sound nearly as well as the Pure Direct. Here is the problem: When turn on Pure Direct, the Yamaha shuts off Zone 2. So to listen to music in both Zones, I have to choose a sub par process in Zone 1. Here is the question: There is an onboard DAC in the Yamaha. When I am feeding the analog output from the Peachtree into the Yamaha and listening in a mode other than Pure Direct, am I processing the signal back to digital and then back to analog again, within the Yamaha?
  3. Aegean, Thanks for the post. I have definitely heard enough to warrant hard wires. BTW, why do you caution against Mach 2. Everything I have read gives it really good marks.
  4. I am new to music server, but not to high end audio. I am currently in the thinking / design phase of buying a music server. I want to stay Apple since my home is Apple. I have been looking at the Mach 2 modification of the Mac Mini and play it through a Peachtree, Ayre, or Benchmark USB Dac. However, I was in my local high end store to listen to the Peachtree and they played some music that was streamed from an Imac to an Airport Express and then into the Peachtree IDAC. It was amazingly clear and rich. Can anyone chime in on the advantages / disadvantages of the two following setups 1. Imac to airport express to Peachtree Idac 2. Mac Mini as modified by Mach 2 used only for music server hardwired to Peachtree dac using usb. As a high end audio user, I am aware that dedicated equipment and hardwiring is always best. However, with the fact that the data is digital to start with, does the wireless really hurt. And, will the clock management and the upsampling of the Peachtree accommodate for the fact that my computer is not dedicated to music.
  5. Bear, Thaks for the comment. How would you suggest I go about determining if my Yamaha has analog bypass? I am not familiar with that concept and it does not show up in the manual.
  6. I am just getting started in the realm of music servers. I would like to piece into this to ensure I understand what I am doing before spending a lot of money on equipment that might not be needed. My current equipment includes the following: Yamaha RXA-2000 receiver that I use as both an AV receiver for movies and a prepamp for music B&K Reference 2220 2 channel 220w ampliphier connected as a per-out from the peramp section of the Yamaha Sony 400 disk CD changer B&W 804 tower speakers dvd, plasma monitor, center channel, rear channel speakers, round everything out but are not relevant to this discussion I want to move away from the cd changer and install a music server. However, I am confused on what value an external DAC will add. My receiver only allows input through HDMI (A/V), digital coax, optical, and rca. It has a pretty decent DAC on board. It is a Burr-Brown 192khz/24-bit DAC for each channel. My question is reagrding how the signal get processed. If I install an external DAC won't my receiver just process the incoming signal again through the internal DAC? If so, what have I gained by getting an external DAC? Thanks for your help Randy
