  1. Hi CA hopefully someone can help me here as Meridian don't seem that helpful! I have an Explorer 2, using with Dell XPS & Tidal to earphones at work - I've got full MQA decoding up to Studio Masters so all streams well. The issue is with the drivers & volume control through the laptop. Tidal settings are Exclusive Mode, Force Volume & Pass Through as expected. When laptop has been off and i enter Tidal for first time and start streaming, laptop volume is always at 98, i.e. MAX so have to remember not to have IEM in otherwise its blown drums! There is no setting anywhere for 'start-up volume' or 'max volume' so i don't see anyway of controlling this. Meridian advised that newest Windows 10 has USB 2.0 Audio so doesn't need their driver now. However it does - wont work without the driver, and even with the driver installed you still have to remember to disable 'digital signature' in F7 on start-up menu as advised in their release instructions, otherwise wont work at all. I even just adjusted colour settings on a separate 4k monitor while listening and volume reverted to 98 nearly blowing me out again! I had a call with Dell, they said laptop is all fine, all USB drivers are up to date - its a Meridian HW issue. I don't have another computer to try and isolate the issue. Also just as annoying is as soon as the laptop updates something else not related to this, i have to re-install the driver again, very frustrating. Any suggestions or ideas please? Have i got a dodgy unit? I would like to think the Dell XPS Windows 10 isn't this issue. Cheers
  2. Thanks for you note..... Software is fully up to date I checked again online plus via units own search and its on current spec - it's only about two months old anyway. Have tried all sorts with the app including deleting it and reloading from scratch, plus all other combinations, but nothing doing. I'm in the UK so will try our distributor guys in the week, starting to think there must be a fault with the MM30. Having switched to one of the other digital inputs to watch a movie, having switched back its lost the DHCP settings again it recaptured earlier - definitely in a bit of a mess and seems to be getting worse. Cheers
  3. I forgot, once it is back online, despite being connected, having IP etc, it won't reveal itself to the primare app, so it's not really back on line at all, or obviously playing music. Is this because the gateway number is still missing? I can't remember what the settings looked like last time it worked, it's been a while! Thanks
  4. Calling all network specialists!! I have a wired setup into the Pre32 from an Asset server. The MM30 media board keeps dropping the DHCP settings. I then disable the DHCP, the numbers jump back in, then re-enable the DHCP and then usually after a reset, all is well. I have to go through this procedure any number of times, could be once or twice, might be many over a period of two or three days to restore. Eventually it picks them up and is reconnected. I have done a factory reset on the Pre32, numerous resets on the MM30, tried lots of other options but I can’t see what else can be done to give it stability. Firmware is current also. I have also done numerous on/off resets on network switch and router that loops the whole system. Everything else is consistent and works ongoing when reading availability on the app, aside from the MM30. At the minute it's worse as its now not picking up the gateway number when it repopulates the DHCP data, so now I can't get it back on line at all for the last few days. I have contacted Primare but nothing back yet, hoping there might be some inspiration out there!! Thanks
  5. Well just for a final follow up in case you were all wondering just what happened in the end, or not, as the case may be.... Anyway eventually got hold of the Primare Pre32 with MM30 media board a couple of weeks back now - we have sound. First things first - network - the bane of the PWD II. Plugged it all in, turned it on. Activated DHCP on ethernet settings. Searched with the app on the touch i'm using for control, found the MM30, library [asset upnp on zoneripper mini], select and play. All done in 5 minutes flat - PW take note! The sound - couple of days burn in, sound is awesome. Good throughout the range, its just smooth, detailed & consistent. Never makes you take note of something that doesn't sound right on a familiar track, it just fades into the background - makes the track sound like you think it should. Thats not to say its bland or non-descript; the low end is a whole new level over the Linn and has taken the genelecs down a notch further which i didn't know they had, truly epic bass, and neither they or the Primare ever seem to be over working or trying to hard despite the volume selected. The exceptional bass is carried through to blu-ray [via coax] and is even making me think twice about adding the matching genelec sub. I probably still will though one day! The app itself is pretty good, i only have it on a touch at the moment so hard to get a good feel for it, will be on ipad shortly, but more than happy with its function so far - its pretty simple, but with asset as the server all the detail you need is managed and then carried through to the app for you. Only moan would be a matching weighty aluminium remote instead of the standard plastic thingy. So all in all, a good decision, i'm very pleased! Its a beautiful, and very heavy slab of swedish aluminium, well designed, thought out and implemented. Primare should be applauded for delivering a great steaming preamp with such simplicity & quality. The only disappointment is there has been very little press or reviews, just a few european magazines, nothing i've seen from the big boys in the UK or US, which is a great shame, they deserve to sell more of these and people deserve to hear more of it. Well done Primare, i'm converted!
  6. Thanks David..... Sounds like you have listened to the Pre32 and were quite impressed? Any particular impression on its overall sound type/style, i haven't heard any Primare kit as yet. Have you seen the Primare App, and thats what you were comparing to Kinsky, or was it just with a generic app at the time? I fully expect that whichever way i turn the software will fall short of Linn at least in the short term - i've been spoilt! Has anyone used the MIND software from Moon incidentally? I could handle the volume control issues that wouldn't bother me too much. Originally i liked the functionality of having the HDMI in the Linn DSM as i was combining the two systems so it would be a nice one box set-up, however i can deal without that as i now have SKY going into HDMI Back on Oppo 103 for upscaling direct into TV - a bit awkward but it does make a difference to the SKY picture and therefore would be able to get the 2.1 Genelec audio for SKY [optical] & Oppo [co-ax] out of Oppo to Pre32 [or what was the PWD II, now returned] Hadn't thought of the Majik DSM to be honest, i guess mainly as it was one back down from the Akurate, plus i didn't want to be paying for amplification that i wasn't using - also looking now, no XLR out for direct to active Genelecs. I guess the Pre 32 made sense because what i was actually looking for was pre-amp control for multiple inputs, but to include 24/192 streaming, so it ticked all the boxes. The PWD II was a DAC that happened to have Pre functions rather than the other way round. The new Naim Pre offers the same as the Primare but no XLR. Anyone know of a Pre with streaming capabilities out, or due out soon to catch up with Primare/Naim, but will have XLR outs? Seems Primare is alone for now, there must be others coming....!!?? Cheers
  7. Cheers - i did very much want the DSM, but its expensive! If i traded in the DS, i would still have to find another £2500 extra. Current plan is to try the Primare Pre32 with MM30 [suggested by Eloise i think on here], which fingers crossed should give me the pre amp inputs i need for Oppo & SKY audio, with decent volume control, streaming from NAS and hopefully good software! No extra cash required, just sell the Linn Don't get me wrong i love it, just need inputs now i have AV & Hifi in same room not split Mind you will still probably think i've saved £2500 so may as well get that Isotek Aquaris & HiFi Racks Podium XL with it....!!!
  8. Just as a general note, though i think you have sussed it out earlier anyway. I have a Linn Akurate DS with Kinsky, but wanted pre amp function for other connections, so went to exchange for a PWD II. The PWD II on the CASH list does indeed sound amazing, when it works and you can get i to play music! Certainly not gapless and more than a struggle to get it to play anything through EMM, which quite frankly is a hideous piece of software. It actually worked better with Kinsky running my Asset UPnP server than EMM, though it didn't give all functions and would only play individual tracks, no album play - but at least it made a sound, it was that bad this was a better resort! After a couple of weeks i gave up, its going back and the Linn remains in place. The brits have it at a canter! Linn i think has nailed it the best i have seen to date as far as soft/hardware goes for streaming. Good luck!
  9. Well the adventure continues..... Over in the UK there was a mega offer -35% on PWD II & Bridge, so thought i would go for it. Really enjoyed the sound from it, Nativex mode through the bridge was absolutely fantastic, quite bass heavy, certainly more so than my Linn Akurate, so a different sound - possibly better but i'm not sure, it never worked long enough to know! So it was great to listen to, when it worked, and that wasn't very often. Software issues were unbelievable, i had it for a week and spent 1-2 hours every night messing around with it/network trying to encourage it to play some music. Hours spent trawling through the forums [very helpful forum people i have to say], downloading previous more stable firmwares, changing fixed IP etc etc. EMM is a nightmare, how they ever thought it ready to release to market is beyond me, i assume they must never have tried a competitors product as comparison. In the end it was actually easier to get music out using Linn's Kinsky through the PWD, than it was EMM. In the end i gave up, i went back to using the Linn which i still had for music, and just switching speakers over when i wanted to watch a movie back through the coax input on the PWD II. So disappointing as it genuinely sounded brilliant. Digital volume control when it did work into the active Genelec's was also poor in comparison to the Linn. The whole package just wasn't worth the hassle. If you pay a few $k you expect it to work. I don't mind doing a bit of sorting out on network & firmware etc its an accepted bi-product, but this was beyond the call of duty. CASH for sound agreed, other than that or you want to dedicate your life to messing around with it, don't bother. Its going back, they are getting me a Primare Pre32 with MM30 to try. I am sure the Swedes will have nailed it with a bit more professionalism, just like Linn have......
  10. hi, i have been talking about Genelecs with DigiPete recently. If you go with the 82xx series then you really need to be connecting with AES/EBU digitally to use their onboard 24/192 dac, otherwise i don't see the point of having them. if you don't go fully digital then to utilise the balanced xlr you should just go to the analogue version which is what i have currently, so the 8040A, 8050A etc. Hope this helps
  11. http://meicord.de/fileadmin/files/Hi-fi_ChoiceJune2012_MeiCord_opal_en.pdf I have these Meicord cables from NAS direct to Linn Akurate, however have had them in from the start so no direct testing. But the system does sound good!
  12. Thanks David. I thought the streaming might be a of a lower spec than the Pre, in the reviews i read it sounds like a real basic form with some file issues, rather than something you would want to comitt to for your full system. Has anyone listened to the Pre32? I am trying to arrange a demo but the particular shop hasn't replied to my enquiry yet after two days, bit disappointing! You would think they would be keen to take £3k of my hands!
  13. Thanks Eloise & Pete, great info! Eloise i was reading up about the Pre32, and then also realised the BD32 also has UPnP streaming function plus AES/EBU & balanced XLR outs, so i could still go wither way with speakers. Do you know much about this model? I was wondering if the same App used for the Pre32 streaming would work with the BD32? Also i saw somewhere that it didn't play AIFF but did play WAV & FLAC - typically i'm mainly AIFF [all CD rips] with some FLAC & WAV [downloads]. I could get down to single box then instead of BR player plus Pre32 I guess thinking about it i would have volume control issues as well? Unless i went with Petes DSP actives - Pete thoughts? Maybe the Pre32 is the safer bet, plus it means i don't have to get a computer and can just use current Zoneripper - i will try and get a demo. Thanks
  14. DigiPete - sorry just re-read and got you on the U3 only, the review with the Eximus threw me, long few days! So simply - mac with pure music etc via usb to U3 - AES - Genelec 8240A As it only has single AES it runs to one and then daisy to the other with its digital thru connection? Is volume control always within GLM or will the volume control in Pure Music run them? Thanks, sorry this is a stretch for me into DSP studio products!
  15. Liking the sound of the Pre32 Primare, always such lovely looking kit to! Hopefully they will put some digi inputs into that new board upgrade so i could get the Blur Ray into it also. Seen anymore details on the upgrade, i couldn't so far? I guess it might cost a fair bit too, but obviously all in still considerably less than the Linn. DigiPete - i like them apples - that is one hell of a Genelec rig you have going on there! It must sound awesome - how big is the room!?? Big enough to cope with it i guess. I had looked at the DSP's and thought about them, but really wasn't sure about implementation to home audio and what other pro tools you might need. I read the instructions and it made my head hurt a bit - i get it, but not enough to get my cheque book out without speaking to some pro guys first. Obviously the Genelec control package works well i assume? If they have onboard 24/192 dac why the Eximus, for volume control and to take usb from computer storage? Could you explain a bit more on how you would set this system up? I assume your 5.1 takes 6 from the Weiss into the sub and then all out from there around the room, or do they just daisy round to each other? Thanks
