  1. With school systems cutting back on non-academic (sports-music-drama) that are non self reliant, it isn't surprising that classical is slowly going away. The days of going into a local music store and listening to personal recommendations are also gone which doesn't help either. I started getting serious about listening to classical music while in college in the mid 70's. The student union played only instrumental classical in the area that had the most comfortable leather easy chairs. Maybe playing music in a study/student lounge in middle or high school might be a start. Who knows? As for classical music stations, Andrews University in south Michigan has a wonderful classical station. It is WAUS and is also available as an app for iPhones (not sure about Android).
  2. Any current Luxman will work, either the class A or class AB models. Unless you have a smaller room or will use it at low to mid volume, the class AB models will be a better fit. You might also consider the new Rogue integrated. I have heard it with the 30.1 and 40.1 with great success at shows and our local Harbeth dealer.
  3. I want to get back to original issue… test of PCM vs. DSD. 1st off I am a music lover, not a neurotic audiophile nor do I possess a strong computer technical background. To me this test comparison is flawed. To be 100% fair to both technologies a fair test in my mind would require identical master recording in pure PCM from the original recording vs. pure DSD from the original recording. I doubt that would be easy to do. Otherwise limitations and other sonic issues would flaw the purity and increase the variability of the test. Using a recording from an analogue source adds too many other variabilities. Is this a correct assumption? Regardless of the theoretical advantage either provides, we are still limited by the recording engineer and the pressing as well. Excuse me if I am wrong, please help me understand.
  4. Bought a FoxL a couple of years ago after comment at RMAF. Was hospitalized for extended stay shortly thereafter a few times. Along with my iPad for reading, it helped to pass time away when connected to my laptop iTunes library. A number of nurses and visitors commented how good it sounded.
  5. No I meant Hutton. I personally don't care for Timberlake's music but a couple of my kids do like his music. If it brings more new pele to this crazy hobby, so be it!
  6. Chris, It is time to invoke the policy Stereophile uses. Enough of this guys nonsense. Ban him from posting for 6 months. After that, if he continues this nonsense, ban him permanently. I realize we have a free speech policy in the US but we readers deserve better as well. Either he cleans up his act or kick his butt to the curb!
  7. I would choose either Mini Maggie or Audience single driver system for speakers and either Nuforce or Wyred 4Sound integrated for power depending on how big room is or how loud you want to play.
  8. A friend of mine and I are arguing over what type if cable is best for connecting to computer and dac. He has an extreme hatred of USB cables as the power and signal are not isolated enough. I said it depends on dac, available computer connections and quality of cable. In theory I prefer i2s or thunderbolt. But reality says they all have there pluses and minuses. Since I am not a physicist, electrical engineer, or computer specialist, I am deferring to the gurus here. Please settle this discussion.
  9. Terry Kath-Chicago was NEVER the same after hs death. His guitar playing was praised then and is still respected. Buddy Holly-I am too young to know his music when it first exploded on the scene, but after reading an article about how many artists of the 60's and 70's were influenced by him, I bought an album of his and was hooked. I would have loved to hear the Rat Pack live in their heyday in the early 60's. Live, they were politically incorrect, but they all knew how to sing and entertain!
  10. I am interested in a transport primarily for music and was zeroing in on an Oppo 105. Why would they make it incompatible with AIFF files? It looks like it is compatible with all other file types.
  11. I second the use of this for "road warriors" or for use when demonstrating a product at someone's office. Much clearer than laptop computer speakers and easy to take with.
  12. Yes it is on " Now More Than Ever". On my friend's download and mine (they were purchased months apart), the trombone is non existent for the final 30-45 sec. It is not subtle and causes the melody to sound ackward. I have heard the melody the way it was originally recorded on the original lp, the original cd, and the rhino remix. I guess I'll have to get the new MFSL next week to see what's up. As for mislabeling songs, they have over 1/2 the songs on the download as part of Ballad for a girl from Buchanan. I can't recall exact number as I corrected as soon as I downloaded and so did my friend.
  13. It's not the quality of the sound...it is a remix that takes the trombone from primary on original and rhino mixes to virtually nonexistent on the download. This changes the way the end of the song is portrayed. Average music listeners, music lovers, and audiophiles may not notice it but Chicagophiles (those who love Chicago's music especially when Terry Ksth was alive) noticed it quickly.
  14. A friend of mine has gone nuts with this download. Besides mislabeling songs, the 12th song at the end of the download is missing the trombone in the mix that completes the end of the song. It's no big deal to me but he has even sent hdtracks an email asking for explanation. They did promptly respond but only that they will look into the matter. Judging from the word phrasing in it both heard I think it is not just a form letter response. Since he is not a member of this forum, I told him I would post to see other's responses. Has anybody else noticed these remix differences in downloads?
  15. 1. Audio Quest Dragonfly-goes without saying it should be runaway #1. 2. Amarra.--with its new aggressive pricing, it brings the best software for Mac to a far more realistic/affordable price. 3. More hd downloads of all music types and not just "audiophile music". More new music as well as old in rock, jazz, and classical types to come is a win for all of us. Products to watch in 2013. 1. Headphones--all prices both in and on ear types. 2. Dsd software/hardware 3. More digital sound processing for speakers/rooms of all types. Not just for home theater any longer, companies like Behringer, Dspeaker, Holm, Tact and others are slowly finding their way into home audio systems.
